BackgroundLocalized stress and cell death in chronic inflammatory diseases may release tissue-specific lipids into the circulation causing the blood plasma lipidome to reflect the type of inflammation. However, deep lipid profiles of major chronic inflammatory diseases have not been compared.MethodsPlasma lipidomes of patients suffering from two etiologically distinct chronic inflammatory diseases, atherosclerosis-related vascular disease, including cardiovascular (CVD) and ischemic stroke (IS), and ...

EnglishThis paper presents a brief review of the archaeological research conducted at the Pedra do Cantagalo I site, a prehistoric heritage site located in the rural area of the municipality of Piripiri, Piaui State, Brazil. The sandstone shelter revealed an exceptional collection of more than 1,900 rock paintings, rock engravings, chipped lithics, polished lithics, ceramic materials and mineral pigments (reddish ochres). The rock paintings consist of geometric graphisms, human handprints, anthropomorphic ...

Sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate (SCBH) is a low-cost substrate for single-cell oil (SCO) production. However, this hydrolysate has an undesirable low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio and contains inhibitors. Yeast adaptation is a simple strategy to overcome the presence of inhibitors, while the concentration of the hydrolysate and glycerol supplementation are alternatives to solve the low C/N limitation. This work aimed to investigate the adaptation of the yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides in ...

The complex ion trans-[Ru(NH3)4P(OEt)3(H2O)]3+ was obtained through electrochemical and chemical oxidation of the corresponding Ru(II) complex ion. The compound trans-[Ru(NH3)4P(OEt)3(H2O)]-(CF3SO3)3 was isolated and characterized by means of micro-analysis, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The ion trans[Ru(NH3)4P(OEt)3(H2O)]3+ decomposes in aqueous solution according to 4Ru(III)⇒3Ru(II)+ Ru(VI). The decay rate of the Ru(III) complex ion concentration ...

Tryptophan is the only precursor of serotonin and mediates serotonergic activity in the brain. Previous studies have shown that the administration of tryptophan or tryptophan depletion significantly alters cognition, mood and anxiety. Nevertheless, the neurobiological alterations that follow these changes have not yet been fully investigated. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of a tryptophan-enriched diet on immunoreactivity to Fos-protein in the rat brain. Sixteen male Wistar rats ...

Abstract Heterotic grouping based on the analyses of heterosis or combining ability and molecular diversity has not been consistent. The objectives of this study were to investigate the factors affecting heterotic grouping and the significance of the phenotypic and molecular data. We simulated grain yield and molecular data for nine populations, the nine selfed populations, the 36 interpopulation crosses, 225 doubled haploid (DH) lines (25/population), and their 25,200 single crosses. We assumed genetic ...

We consider open sets of transformations in a manifold M, exhibiting non-uniformly expanding behavior in some forward invariant domain U\subset M. Assuming that each transformation has a unique Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen (SRB) measure in U, and some general uniformity conditions, we prove that the SRB measure varies continuously with the dynamics in the L1-norm. We also describe a concrete application.

This study on the factors affecting the adoption of supply chain management (SCM) practices develops four hypotheses based on a literature review, and tests them using survey data of Brazilian electro-electronic firms. The results reveal the big picture of the SCM practices in the sector and suggest that contextual factors such as size, position and bargaining power affect the adoption of SCM practices, which are also more customer oriented. Sector characteristics are very important in analysing ...

The commercial exploitation of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) has been widely promoted to achieve both conservation and economic outcomes in the management of tropical forests by local communities, but monitoring the impacts of NTFPs harvesting is still challenging. Monitoring genetic diversity is a promising approach to assess harvesting impacts and guide best practices. Here, we evaluated the value of community-managed agroforests and secondary forests for conserving genetic structure and diversity ...

The objective of the study was to reduce the ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) incidence rates through a rational prevention program. The study was a non-controlled clinical trial with a set of interventions in mechanically ventilated patients from April 2006 until June 2008. Pneumonia rates were analyzed as time series and their mean risks of development were compared before and after the interventions with a non-concurrent cohort using the same time frame (January 2004–March 2006). Tropical peatlands are important ecosystems for Planet Earth, as they store large amounts of carbon and water. A better understanding of the impact of vegetation type and altitude in content, composition, and rate of accumulation of organic matter is key for assessing the current role of such environments. ABSTRACT The antihypertensive and antioxidant effects of α‐terpineol on hypertensive rats were evaluated in this study. Hypertension was induced in male Wistar rats by oral administration of the N G ‐nitro‐L‐arginine methyl ester (L‐NAME) 50 mg/kg body weight/day) in drinking water for 1 week. Rats with mean arterial pressure > 140 mmHg were considered hypertensive. In order to evaluate the α‐terpineol effect on haemodynamic parameters, rats were treated once a day with different doses of α‐terpineol ( ...

The present study investigated the impact of a western diet during gestation and lactation on the anthropometry, serum biochemical, blood pressure and cardiovascular autonomic control on the offspring. Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups according to their mother’s diet received: control group (C: 18% calories of lipids) and westernized group (W: 32% calories of lipids). After weaning both groups received standard diet. On the 60th day of life, blood samples were collected for the analysis ...

Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic agent commonly used to treat cardiac arrhythmias. This study was designed to investigate the effects of intravenous amiodarone on the neural control of heart rate and arterial pressure and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). The antihypertensive effect of amiodarone was investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The SHR and WKY were treated with amiodarone (1 mg/mL PO) or tap water (control) for 20 weeks. The indirect arterial pressure (AP) was monitored weekly using the tail-cuff method. At the end of the 20th week, the direct AP was measured, and the systolic AP and pulse interval time series were submitted to autoregressive spectral analysis. In addition, cardiac baroreflex ...
