The proteasome multicatalytic proteinase (MCP) is a 20S complex that plays a major role in nonlysosomal pathways of intracellular protein degradation. A polyclonal antibody against rat liver MCP was used to investigate the distribution of MCP in the CNS of the rat and its subcellular localization within the neurons. As expected, MCP immunoreactivity (MCP-IR) was distributed ubiquitously in the rat CNS but not homogeneously. The most intensely stained neurons were the pyramidal cortical neurons of ...

Abstract The aim was to assess the ability of nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 viral load at first patient’s hospital evaluation to predict unfavorable outcomes. We conducted a prospective cohort study including 321 adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 through RT-PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs. Quantitative Synthetic SARS-CoV-2 RNA cycle threshold values were used to calculate the viral load in log 10 copies/mL. Disease severity at the end of follow up was categorized into mild, moderate, and severe. Primary ...

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components. Dendritic cells (DCs) play a key role in the defense against viral infections, for instance plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha (IFN-α). In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-α production, which has been associated with disease severity. In this work, we described that in addition to the DC deficiency, ...

Plasma cells (PCs) are specialized in antibody (Ab) production and they are, therefore, responsible for maintaining humoral immune responses. The human PC compartment is heterogeneous. Strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa) fruits are rich in AsA. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 8, with a mean of 6.25 alleles per primer pair (a total of 25 alleles). The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.58 to 0.95, while the expected heterozygosity varied between ...

Abstract Archaeology provides few examples of large-scale fisheries at the frontier between catching and farming of fish. We analysed the spatial organization of earthen embankments to infer the functioning of a landscape-level pre-Columbian Amazonian fishery that was based on capture of out-migrating fish after reproduction in seasonal floodplains. Long earthen weirs cross floodplains. We showed that weirs bear successive V-shaped features (termed ‘Vs’ for the sake of brevity) pointing downstream ...

Hyper-heuristics are a novel tool. They deal with complex optimization problems where standalone solvers exhibit varied performance. Among such a tool reside selection hyper-heuristics. By combining the strengths of each solver, this kind of hyper-heuristic offers a more robust tool. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on the 'features' used to link them with the problem that is being solved. Aiming at enhancing selection hyper-heuristics, in this paper we propose two types of transformation: ...

The assessment of strengths and weaknesses of a solver is often limited by the diversity of the cases where it is tested upon. As such, it is paramount to have a versatile tool which finds the problem instances where such a solver excels/fails. In this manuscript, we propose to use an evolutionary algorithm for creating this tool. To validate our approach, we conducted several tests on four heuristics for the knapsack problem. Although, the process can be extended to other domains with relatively ...

There is a colourful palette of metaheuristics for solving continuous optimisation problems in the literature. Unfortunately, it is not easy to pick a suitable one for a specific practical scenario. To do so, we recognise search operators from well- ...

Literature is prolific with metaheuristics for solving continuous optimisation problems. But, in practice, it is difficult to choose one appropriately for several reasons. First and foremost, ‘new’ metaheuristics are being proposed at an alarmingly fast rate, rendering impossible to know them all. Hence, this work proposes a strategy based on a hyper-heuristic model powered by Simulated Annealing for ...

Abstract Background Mortality due to COVID-19 is high, especially in patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The purpose of the study is to investigate associations between mortality and variables measured during the first three days of mechanical ventilation in patients with COVID-19 intubated at ICU admission. Methods Multicenter, observational, cohort study includes consecutive patients with COVID-19 admitted to 44 Spanish ICUs between February 25 and July 31, 2020, who required intubation ...

Plasma cells (PC) represent the heterogeneous final stage of the B cells (BC) differentiation process. To characterize the transition of BC into PC, transcriptomes from human naïve BC were compared to those of three functionally-different subsets of human in vivo-generated PC: i) tonsil PC, mainly consisting of early PC; ii) PC released to the blood after a potent booster-immunization (mostly cycling plasmablasts); and, iii) bone marrow CD138+ PC that represent highly mature PC and include the long- ...

The regeneration of thiol-functionalized SBA-15 adsorbents of mercury is presented in this article. The influence of temperature and pH on the adsorption process was studied. The effect due to the presence of complexing agents in aqueous solution on the desorption step was also evaluated. Hg(II) maximum adsorption capacities at different temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 60 °C were obtained and it was found that temperature does not affect the adsorption process. Mercury adsorption capacity was also ...

In the province of León, a network of 250 hailpads has been installed in an area of 1000 km2. After the individual calibration of every plate, the dents are measured by a manual method which stores data in files that can be analyzed by computer. Once the hailstones are classified according to their size, difficulties may arise when fitting linearly this distribution to a function of the type log N = logN0-βx, where N is the number of hailstones in the size class x. A discussion is presented on the ...

Since the first organ transplantation in the 1950s, there have been reports that patients who underwent organ transplantation had a poor prognosis if they were depressed and/or anxious prior to transplantation. Our objective in this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in the different stages of bone marrow transplantation (BMT).Mood disorders (MD), anxiety disorders (AD), and adjustment disorders (ADD) were measured five times with DSM IV. The Beck Inventory of Depression ( ...

To explore the possibility of identifying skull fracture, with or without clinical signs, as a predictor of positive CT scans in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).Prospective cohort study, matched 1:1 for five potential confounding variables (age, sex, symptoms, mechanism of injury and extracranial trauma severity). The study was performed on patients with mTBI (Glasgow Coma Scale 15-14), with or without radiologically demonstrated skull fracture. The cohort with skull fracture included 155 patients ...

The aim of this work was the development of multivariate models able to determine the content of the main crocetin esters and picrocrocin from spectrophotometric data that could be used for routine quality control of saffron. These compounds were determined with HPLC in Spanish saffron, and their absorbance spectra from 190 to 700 nm were simultaneously monitored. Partial least-squares regression (PLSR) models have been obtained and applied to the determination of individual crocetin esters, to the ...
