BackgroundTreatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB) infection presents a challenge because of the scarcity of available options. Even though combination therapy (CT) is frequently used in clinical practice, data are needed to support its use instead of monotherapy (MT).

The aim of the study is to analyze the relation between experiential avoidance and the per- formance on a working-memory task. In Phase 1, 24 participants were selected according to high and low scores in the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), an experiential avoidance measure. Participants then responded to the White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI), the accepting without judgment scale of the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS) and the problem solving and cognitive reappraisal ...

abstract In a prospective study, nine patients with osteoid osteoma were treated with a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor (rofecoxib). Patient pain perception with no treatment, with conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment, and with rofecoxib therapy was compared using a visual analog scale. Tumor response was also monitored by radiographs, computed tomography, and bone scintigraphy. In all cases, pain diminished on administration of rofecoxib in comparison to conventional ...

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease that usually affects women, with a male:female ratio of 1:4–10. It was thought that there was a prohibitive risk of fatal complications in the pregnancies of patients with SSc. It is now known that the majority of these women undergo a normal progression of pregnancy if the right time is chosen and a close obstetric care is delivered. The obstetric risk will depend on the subtype and clinical stage of the disease, and the presence and severity ...

Air pollution in urban areas constitutes a threat for human health and wildlife. For this reason the effect of these pollutants on living organisms must be monitored accurately. Analysis of oxidative stress generated by exposure to pollutants can be used as a reliable biomarker; and House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) may be used as an ecological indicator due to its worldwide distribution, non-migratory status and its association with anthropic areas. In this study, several markers of oxidative stress ...

The ovarian steroids regulate the sensitivity of a population of uterine receptors to prostaglandin F(2alpha), serotonin and oxytocin. However, the uterine sensitivity to prostaglandin F(2alpha) and oxytocin does not coincide with the estrogen-induced increase in the number of receptors. Anatomical differences affect the uterine sensitivity to agonists. We investigated whether anatomical differences between ovarian and cervical uterine regions modulate the hormone-regulated sensitivity to prostaglandin ...

Managing protected areas (PAs) requires dealing with complex social-ecological systems where multiple dimensions (i.e. social, institutional, economic and ecological) interact over time. Uni-dimensional and top-down approaches have been unable to capture this complexity. Instead, new integrated approaches that acknowledge the multidimensional nature of PAs and the diversity of social actors in the decision making process are required. In this paper we put forward a novel participatory assessment approach ...

Nifedipine disposition varies among populations. Reports on oral nifedipine pharmacokinetics show that peak plasma levels and AVC values are higher in Mexican and Japanese than in European and North American subjects. Increased nifedipine bioavailability in the nonwhite populations is likely due to nutritional habits. Certain flavonoids that inhibit the first‐pass metabolism of dihydropyridines are present in the diets of both Mexican and Japanese. Differences in phenotypes may play a role in interethnic ...

Typhoid fever remains a serious public health problem. We have developed a vaccine from Salmonella enterica serovar typhi (S. typhi) outer-membrane proteins (OMPs) known as porins. A single subcutaneous dose of 10 μg of porins induced a five-fold (P=0.05) seroconversion index consisting of IgM and IgG at 7 and 15 days after vaccination as well as the production of IgG1 and IgG2 isotypes. The porins-based vaccine induced a two-fold increase (P=0.05) in bactericidal titres in volunteers, whom also developed ...

The objective of this study was to analyse whether there is an association between reduced susceptibility to biocides in Acinetobacter baumannii and (i) antimicrobial resistance (co-resistance), (ii) prevalent (epidemic) clones, (iii) changes in the fitness or (iv) expression of genes related to efflux pumps and porins. Susceptibility to biocides and antimicrobials was determined in 49 clonally unrelated isolates of A. baumannii. Biological cost, in terms of mean generation time, was determined by spectrophotometry. ...

The House Sparrow is a globally distributed species and is closely associated with anthropised environments. They are well-adapted to urban life; therefore the decline of their populations in Europe represents an unexpected event that demands an investigation into its causes. Causes that have promoted this decline are not well known, but one of the highlighted hypotheses is an increase of oxidative stress linked to the toxicity of pollution in urban areas. From an ecophysiological perspective, oxidative ...

The use of conventional cyclosporine (Sandimmune) requires great care, as this drug exhibits a narrow therapeutic index and wide interindividual variability in its pharmacokinetics. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the bioavailability of cyclosporine after the administration of conventional and microemulsion formulations ...
