The present study described clinical and epidemiological aspects of three cases of feline histoplasmosis and compared them to previously described cases. A detailed mycological identification and antifungal susceptibility profile of each isolate are presented. Secondarily, a serological survey for anti-Histoplasma antibodies was performed with domestic and wild cats. Diseased animals presented nodular to ulcerated skin lesions and respiratory disorders as main clinical signs. H. capsulatum var. ...

Sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix schenckii complex species, is the most prevalent subcutaneous mycosis in many areas of Latin America. Chitosan has been used as an antifungal agent; however the effects of the molecular weight (MW) of chitosan (i.e. high (HMW), medium (MMW) and low (LMW) molecular weight chitosan) on S. brasiliensis has not been well described, particularly on biofilms. Effects on the planktonic form activity of S. brasiliensis were quantified by broth microdilution, while anti-biofilm ...

This study aimed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of kaempferol and quercetin against planktonic and biofilm forms of the Candida parapsilosis complex. Initially, nine C. parapsilosis sensu stricto, nine C. orthopsilosis and nine C. metapsilosis strains were used. Planktonic susceptibility to kaempferol and quercetin was assessed. Growing and mature biofilms were then exposed to the flavonoids at MIC or 10xMIC, respectively, and theywere also analyzed by confocal laser scanning ...

Difficulties in the treatment of Candida spp. invasive infections are usually related to the formation of biofilms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of molecular weight (MW) of chitosan (using high (HMW), medium (MMW) and low (LMW) molecular weight chitosan) on Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto. The deacetylation degree (DD) and molecular weight M were measured by potentiometric titration and viscosimetry, respectively. The planktonic shape activity ...

This study analyzes annual reports as media of intellectual capital disclosure (ICD) by Portuguese listed companies using costs/benefits theoretical framework. According to this framework which companies have an incentive to disclose voluntary information when the benefits to be derived from additional disclosure are perceived to outweigh the associated costs, is used. Regression analysis is used to analyze some factors which influence ICD. The findings reported in this study are consistent with ...

Background Classification defined in the Trial of Org10172 in Acute Ischaemic Stroke (TOAST) is widely used in trials and practice. Previous studies on pathophysiology suggest a role for endothelial inflammation in atherothrombotic strokes and intracardiac thrombosis in cardioembolic strokes. Data on lacunar and undetermined strokes are limited. The aim of the study was to assess non-specific inflammatory and thrombogenic parameters in patients with ischaemic stroke. Methods This was a prospective controlled ...

This study provides empirical evidence on how corporate sustainability performance (CSP), as proxied by membership of the Dow Jones sustainability index, is reflected in the market value of equity. Using a theoretical framework combining institutional perspectives, stakeholder theory, and resource-based perspectives, we develop a set of hypotheses that relate the market value of equity to CSP. For a sample of North American firms, our preliminary results show that CSP has significant explanatory ...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a frequent cause of infection after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Colonization with MRSA is associated with a higher risk of infection. Previous studies have shown a high prevalence of MRSA colonization among OLT candidates. However, the risk of colonization with MRSA after OLT is still unclear. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence and the factors associated with colonization with MRSA after OLT. This was a prospective ...

Platanichthys platana is considered a constant species in both Cabiúnas and Imboassica lagoons that are characterised by different marine and freshwater inputs, and anthropogenic influences. The stomach content analysis of P. platana captured between July 1991 and July 1993 revealed filamentous algae, detritus, eggs of benthic invertebrates, larvae of chironomids and bivalves as the main food sources in Imboassica lagoon. Small-sized cladocerans, copepods and shrimp larvae were the prevailing items ...

Abstract The mechanism of action of a nonspecific smooth muscle relaxant, (O-methyl-)-N-(2,6-dihydroxybenzoyl)tyramine (riparin), a constituent of Aniba riparia (Nees) Mez. (Lauraceae) was studied in relation to Ca2+ metabolism in smooth muscle tissues and in guinea-pig alveolar leucocytes. In rat depolarized uterus, riparin inhibited in a reversible and noncompetitive manner CaCl2-induced contraction, a response mediated through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. The pD2 value (mean±s.e.m.) for riparin ...

The selection of appropriate aggregates should consider important factors such as mineralogical characteristics and crushing processes. This paper aims to investigate the relations between aggregates sources, crushing processes, shape, and resistance to degradation. Therefore, different materials were compared in terms of mineralogy and shape. Each material was also submitted to degradation tests to evaluate breakage, abrasion, and polishing resistance. The heterogeneity of gneissic aggregates led ...

Aim: To evaluate the inhibition of efflux pumps by using promethazine (PMZ) as a strategy to control Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC). Materials & methods: The susceptibility of FSSC strains to PMZ and the interaction between PMZ and antifungals were evaluated. The efflux pump activity was confirmed by flow cytometry with rhodamine 6G. Finally, PMZ was tested against FSSC biofilms. Results: PMZ inhibited FSSC planktonic growth and showed synergism with antifungals. PMZ reduced R6G efflux and inhibited ...

Volume measurements of maxillary sinus may be useful to identify diseases affecting paranasal sinuses. However, literature shows a lack of consensus in studies measuring the volume. This may be attributable to different computed tomography data acquisition techniques, segmentation methods, focuses of investigation, among other reasons. Furthermore, methods for volumetrically quantifying the maxillary sinus are commonly manual or semiautomated, which require substantial user expertise and are time- ...

The outbreak caused by SARS-CoV-2 has taken many lives worldwide. Although vaccination has started, the development of drugs to either alleviate or abolish symptoms of COVID-19 is still necessary. Here, four synthetic peptides were assayed regarding their ability to protect Vero E6 cells from SARS-CoV-2 infection and their toxicity to human cells and zebrafish embryos. All peptides had some ability to protect cells from infection by SARS-CoV-2 with the D614G mutation. Molecular docking predicted ...

B. pseudomallei causes significant morbidity and mortality, but its geographic prevalence and genetic diversity are not well characterized, especially in the Western Hemisphere. Respiratory pathology induced by low frequency noise (LFN, <500 Hz, including infrasound) is not a novel subject given that in the 1960's, within the context of U.S. and U.S.S.R. Space Programs, other authors have already reported its existence. Within the scope of vibroacoustic disease (VAD), a whole-body pathology caused by excessive exposure to LFN, respiratory pathology takes on specific features. Initially, respiratory pathology was not considered a consequence of LFN exposure; but today, LFN ...

O hiperparatireoidismo secundário é a principal causa da doença renal óssea, e as manifestações clínicas são: dor óssea, artralgia e prurido.
