Noroviruses are the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in all age groups worldwide. Despite the high genetic diversity of noroviruses, most AGE outbreaks are caused by a single norovirus genotype: GII.4. Since 1995, several different variants of norovirus GII.4 have been associated with pandemics, with each variant circulating for 3 to 8 years. The Sydney_2012 variant was first reported in Australia and then in other countries. A new variant, GII.P16-GII.4, was recently described in Japan ...

Catalysts of Cu(II) and Co(II) adsorbed in chitosan was used in transesterification of soy bean and babassu oils. The catalysts were characterized by infrared, atomic absorption and TG, and biodiesels was characterized by infrared, NMR, CG, TG, physic chemistry analysis. The maximum adsorption values found for copper and cobalt cations were 1.584 and 1.260 mg g−1, respectively, in 180 min. However, conversion of oils in biodiesel was better when used Co(II) adsorbed in chitosan.

The analysis of the transient overvoltages in a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) motor drive system comprises a wide frequency range, which starts with the low values corresponding to the motor speed, includes the switching harmonics, which can reach up to few hundreds of kHz, and also the cable resonance frequency, which value can be in the MHz range, depending on the cable length. In this context, this work presents a time domain methodology for cable modeling able to represent the cable parameters ...

Nucleotides are released into the extracellular milieu from infected cells and cells at inflammatory sites. The extracellular nucleotides bind to specific purinergic (P2) receptors and thereby induce a variety of cellular responses including anti-parasitic effects. Here we investigated whether extracellular nucleotides affect leishmanial infection in macrophages, and found that UTP reduces strongly the parasite load in peritoneal macrophages. Ultrastructural analysis of infected cells revealed that ...

Spatial distribution of species genetic diversity is often driven by geographical distance (isolation by distance) or environmental conditions (isolation by environment), especially under climate change scenarios such as Quaternary glaciations. Here, we used coalescent analyses coupled with ecological niche modelling (ENM), spatially explicit quantile regression analyses and the multiple matrix regression with randomization (MMRR) approach to unravel the patterns of genetic differentiation in the widely ...

The viral mimetic polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) is an important tool to study the consequences of viral infection to the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, based on the premise of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3 PUFAs) as supplemental treatment to antipsychotics in schizophrenia, we investigated the involvement of NFkB pathway in the effects of n3 PUFAs or of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine in hippocampal poly I:C-challenged neurons. Changes in landscape structure can affect essential population ecological features, such as dispersal and recruitment, and thus genetic processes. Here, we analyze the effects of landscape metrics on adaptive quantitative traits variation, evolutionary potential, and on neutral genetic diversity in populations of the Neotropical savanna tree Tabebuia aurea. Using a multi-scale approach, we sampled five landscapes with two sites of savanna in each. To obtain neutral genetic variation, we genotyped ...

The South American giant ant, Dinoponera quadriceps (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Ponerinae), produces proteinaceous venom that has antinociceptive, neuroprotective and antimicrobial effects, thereby supporting the popular use of these ants to treat asthma, rheumatism, earache and back pain. Anticoagulant activity is another biological property that has been shown for the venom of other hymenopteran species, like wasps. The aim of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant and antiplatelet ...

Abstract In this work, the evolution of the surface morphology of ZnO thin films deposited by reactive RF magnetron sputtering has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All AFM images of the films were analyzed using scaling concepts. To study the growth evolution, different ZnO films with thicknesses of up to 1270 nm were deposited at temperatures of 100 and 250 °C. For the films grown at 100 °C, AFM data show that the lateral length ξ evolves continuously ...

Unverricht–Lundborg disease is the most common form of progressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME). It is due to cystatin B gene (CSTB) mutations. Several mutations in CSTB gene have been published, but few in homozygosity. We describe a patient with a new splicing alteration. Mutation Gln22Gln leads to abnormal splicing and partial inclusion of intronic sequence. This is one of the few cases of homozygosity for a non-classic mutation and adds to mutational heterogeneity of CSTB.

This paper formulates the 3D containership loading planning problem (3D CLPP) and also proposes a new and compact representation to efficiently solve it. The key objective of stowage planning is to minimise the number of container movements and also the ship's instability. This new representation is combined with three metaheuristics – genetic algorithm, simulated ...

Coconut palms of the Tall group were introduced to Brazil from the Cape Verde Islands in 1553. The present study sought to evaluate the genetic diversity among and within Brazilian Tall coconut populations. Samples were collected of 195 trees from 10 populations. Genetic diversity was accessed by investigating 13 simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci. This provided a total of 68 alleles, ranging from 2 to 13 alleles per locus, with an average of 5.23. We study the surface morphology evolution of ZnO thin films grown on glass substrates as a function of thickness by RF magnetron sputtering technique. The surface topography of the samples is measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). All AFM images of the films are analyzed using scaling concepts. The grains increase in size and height with growth time resulting in the formation of a mounds-like structure. ...

In this work, the surface and electrical characteristics ZnO:Al thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering onto glass substrates have been investigated. Analysis of surface morphologies revealed two growth stages. In the first stage, up to thicknesses of 100 nm, the films show surface structures with a granular form without preferential orientation. Beyond thicknesses of 100 nm, however, the grain structures increase in size and height, producing a pyramidal form and preferred orientation along ...
