The antimicrobial activity of hemoglobin fragments (hemocidins) has been reported in a variety of models. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a blood sucking arthropod from where the first in vivo-generated hemocidin was characterized (Hb 33-61). In the present work we identified a novel antimicrobial peptide from the midgut of fully engorged R. (B.) microplus females, which comprises the amino acids 98-114 of the alpha subunit of bovine hemoglobin, and was designated Hb 98-114. This ...

Abstract Introduction CD40 Ligand (CD40L) and its soluble counterpart (sCD40L) are proteins that exhibit prothrombotic and proinflammatory properties on binding to their cell surface receptor CD40. The results of small clinical studies suggest that sCD40L levels could play a role in sepsis; however, there are no data on the association between sCD40L levels and mortality of septic patients. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether circulating sCD40L levels could be a marker of adverse ...

Abstract Double‐decker complexes of lanthanide cations can be readily prepared with tetraazaporphyrins (porphyrazines). We have synthesized and characterized a series of neutral double‐decker complexes [Ln(OETAP) 2 ] (Ln=Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ , Gd 3+ , Y 3+ ; OETAP=octa(ethyl)tetraazaporphyrin). Some of these complexes show analogous magnetic features to their phthalocyanine (P c ) counterparts. The Tb 3+ and Dy 3+ derivatives exhibit single‐molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with high blocking temperatures over 50 and 10 K, ...

Purpose Clopidogrel is a thienopyridine prodrug that inhibits platelet aggregation. It is prescribed to prevent atherothrombotic and thromboembolic events in patients receiving a stent implant in carotid, vertebral, or cranial arteries. The influence of cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 2C19 on the response to clopidogrel has been widely studied; however, the effect of other genes involved in clopidogrel absorption and metabolism has not been established in this cohort of patients. Methods This observational ...

Abstract Mechanochemistry, that is, the use of mechanical energy produced by milling or grinding to perform chemical transformations, was used as a green strategy using a minimal amount of solvent for the preparation of highly valuable formyl functionalized BODIPY dyes. Such an understanding of the molecular structure‐fluorescence interplay explains the brightness ...

Although recent studies indicate that epicardial adipose tissue expresses brown fat-like genes, such as PGC1α, UCP1 and PRDM16, the association of these genes with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) in coronary artery disease (CAD) remains unknown. PGC1α, UCP1, and PRDM16 mRNAs expression levels were measured by real-time PCR in epicardial and thoracic subcutaneous adipose tissue from 44 CAD patients (22 with DM2 [CAD-DM2] and 22 without DM2 [CAD-NDM2]) and 23 non-CAD patients (NCAD). It was illustrated that organostannanes also participate in the L-S reaction to give the corresponding BODIPY analogues in short reaction times and also with good ...
