The high production of iron ore in Brazil necessarily leads to the generation of large amounts of waste from the beneficiation stage. The storage of this material in dams is associated not only to environmental problems, but also with the risks related to the safety of the population. The aim of this research was to study a new alternative for reusing high-silicon iron ore tailings, applying them in the red clay ceramic industry. For this, a mixture design of experiments was developed, using three ...

Abstract. Country-specific soil organic carbon (SOC) estimates are the baseline for the Global SOC Map of the Global Soil Partnership (GSOCmap-GSP). This endeavor is key to explaining the uncertainty of global SOC estimates but requires harmonizing heterogeneous datasets and building country-specific capacities for digital soil mapping (DSM). We identified country-specific predictors for SOC and tested the performance of five predictive algorithms for mapping SOC across Latin America. The algorithms ...

Abstract GIS-based digital modelling tools, such as the well-known least cost paths (LCP), have been widely used in archaeology in recent years as ways of approaching forms of mobility in the past. Roman roads are among the best-known examples of ancient networks of paths and have been widely studied using such approaches. In this paper, we shall make a general reflection on the applicability of those tools for the modelling and analysis of ancient routes, with a special focus on Roman roads. Drawing ...

Nearly half of the total iron ore volume extracted in mining operations is rejected as tailings and disposed of in containment dams that are liable for considerable environmental impact and human hazard in case of breaching. This work aims to expand the usage possibilities of iron ore tailings and help mitigate the negative impact of tailings-dams without sacrificing the opportunities provided by mining. Materials were collected from four tailings-dams, subjected to a dry separation procedure and ...

Parameter estimation procedures are very important in the chemical engineering field for development of mathematical models, since design, optimization and advanced control of chemical processes depend on model parameter values obtained from experimental data. Model nonlinearity makes the estimation of parameter and the statistical analysis of parameter estimates more difficult and more challenging. In this work, it is shown that many of these difficulties can be overcome with the use of heuristic ...

Over the last centuries, Western diets acquired a dramatic imbalance in the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) with a concomitant reduction in the dietary proportion of n-3 PUFA. Pastures are a good source of n-3 fatty acids, although the effect of forage intake in the fatty acid profile of meat from free-range chicken remains to be evaluated. In addition, it is unknown if consumer interest in specialty poultry products derived from free-range or organic production ...

Abstract We address the single‐source uncapacitated minimum cost network flow problem with general concave cost functions. Exact methods to solve this class of problems in their full generality are only able to address small to medium size instances, since this class of problems is known to be NP‐Hard. Therefore, approximate methods are more suitable. In this work, we present a hybrid approach combining a genetic algorithm with a local search. Randomly generated test problems have been used to test ...

RAB proteins are small GTPases involved in exocytic and endocytic pathways of eukaryotic cells, controlling vesicle docking and fusion. RABs show a remarkable specificity in subcellular localization, so they can be used as molecular markers for studying protein trafficking in Trypanosoma cruzi, the causal agent of Chagas’ disease. RAB5 is a component of early endosomes. It has been identified in kinetoplastids such as Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania donovani. In this work, we describe the characterization ...
