Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and Pathfinder techniques for assessing changes in the structural representation (RP) of a knowledge (KN) domain as a function of learning were compared and evaluated. Relatedness ratings, collected from university students before and after they studied a textbook, were analyzed with both MDS and Pathfinder procedures. Relatedness ratings were collected from the students'instructors, and the similarity between the instructors' structural RPs and those of their students ...

Video game usage among young people has generated great concern due to its possible negative effects on their health, socialization and academic performance. Regarding this last aspect, there are studies that point out that video games have negative consequences for academic performance while others emphasize their positive effects. Therefore, the present study deals with the relationship between the video game usage time and the academic performance in adolescent schoolchildren from the Valencian ...

The African swine fever virus-induced proteins on plasma membranes of infected cells have been studied by two different procedures, iodination and incubation of infected cells labeled with [35S]methionine with a specific antiserum, obtained from pigs immunized with a monkey stable cell-adapted African swine fever virus. The combined use of both procedures identified proteins IP56, IP51, IP35, IP34, IP31, IP30, IP25.5, IP23.5, IP16, IP15, IP14, and IP12 as viral antigens exposed on the surface of ...

This paper faces the study of two Roman republican cities, and also comments their functions. These cities are both established by the Ebro river and they are separated only from a few km. Also, they were founded in second century B.C., and destroyed during the Sertorian Wars; but their functions seem to have been different: La Corona could have been destined for being inhabited by Iberians and La Cabaneta, maybe ancient Castra Aelia, to receive an important amount of Italic people. So, we find ...

Objective To analyze the impact of the eSET followed by single-embryo cryotransfer versus double embryo transfer in older women (<38 years) without taking into account embryo quality. Study design This is a prospective randomised clinical trial performed on 194 couples attempting a first IVF cycle in a Public Hospital in Spain. The women in Group 1 received eSET plus a single-embryo cryotransfer, and those in Group 2 received a double embryo transfer (DET). Results In the intention-to-treat analysis, ...

According to the latest ART report for Europe, about 13 % of pregnancies after frozen embryo transfer are multiple. Our objective was to analyse the impact on the multiple pregnancy rate of two eSFET (elective single frozen embryo transfers) versus a DFET (double frozen embryo transfer) in women aged under 38 years, who had not achieved pregnancy in their fresh transfer and who had at least two vitrified embryos of A/B quality. This study was conducted from January 2010 to June 2013 at a public hospital. ...

African swine fever virus induces in convalescent pigs antibodies that neutralized the virus before and after binding to susceptible cells, inhibiting both virus attachment and internalization. A further analysis of the neutralization mechanisms mediated by the different viral proteins showed that antibodies to proteins p72 and p54 are involved in the inhibition of a first step of the replication cycle related to virus attachment, while antibodies to protein p30 are implicated in the inhibition ...

Abstract Presently, no data on the molecular basis of hereditary protein C (PC) deficiency in Spain is available. We analyzed the PC gene (PROC) in 109 patients with symptomatic PC deficiency and in 342 relatives by sequencing the 9 PROC exons and their flanking intron regions. In 93 probands, we found 58 different mutations (26 novel). Thirty-seven consisted of a nucleotide change, mainly missense mutations, 1 was a 6-nucleotide insertion causing the duplication of 2 amino acids, and 4 were deletions ...

Genetic predisposition to hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is associated with primary hypertriglyceridemia (HTG). If iron overload influences the development of HTG, the management of these patients could be different. However, the metabolic syndrome in primary HTG is frequent; and it could partially confuse the association. The objective was to determine whether periodic bloodletting could decrease triglyceride concentrations in subjects with HH and iron overload. We retrospectively studied 155 genetically ...
