Many studies have demonstrated the potential of large scale energy analyses when it comes to achieving highly energy-efficient districts. Much emphasis has been placed on giving insights into how to obtain accurate energy demand and solar potential estimations for whole regions, as a means of enhancing the integration of renewable energies, achieving higher self-sufficiencies or decreasing the energy costs. However, it is necessary to figure out whether it would be possible to enhance the economic ...

Abstract The compositions of the essential oils isolated from the aerial parts of 11 populations of Thymus caespititius collected during the flowering phase on Pico, Faial and Graciosa (Azores) were studied by GC and GC‐MS. The monoterpene fraction was dominant in all the oils analysed (55–90%) and consisted mainly of oxygen‐containing compounds (44–79%). Sesquiterpenes represented an important fraction of the oils from the populations grown on Graciosa (13–28%). In contrast, this fraction was rather ...

Anticancer immune responses depend on efficient presentation of tumor antigens and co-stimulatory signals provided by antigen-presenting cells (APCs). However, it is described that immature dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages at the tumor site may have an immunosuppressive profile, which limits the activity of effector T cells and supports tumor progression. Therapeutic targeting of these innate immune cells, either aiming at their elimination or re-polarization towards an immunostimulatory profile, ...

La Graciosa volcanic island evolved in the late Pleistocene–Holocene. It is situated along the northeast of the Canarian Archipelago, with a subaerial surface of 27 km2. This island is located close to the Western Sahara, being 80 km from the north-western African continental shelf and 145 km from the coast. The island supports a very small permanent population. The climate is coastal-arid (116 mm precipitation per annum). Regular occurrences of Saharan dust plumes (about 30% of the year), with a ...

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;">Graciosa is a mid-Pleistocene to Holocene volcanic island that lies in a complex plate boundary between the North American, Eurasian, and Nubian plates. Large fault scarps displace the oldest (Middle Pleistocene) volcanic units, but in the younger areas recent volcanism (Holocene to Upper Pleistocene) conceals the surface expression of faulting, limiting neotectonic observations. The large displacement ...

Abstract The burden of chronic inflammatory diseases of joints and the spine is increasing with population ageing and unhealthy lifestyles. Articular cartilage and intervertebral discs (IVDs) are avascular and aneural tissues with abundant extracellular matrix, low cell density, and reduced regenerative capacity after damage or degeneration. The most advanced in vitro and ex vivo cell‐/tissue‐/biomaterial‐based models and technologies to improve physiological mimicry are discussed, focusing on the ...

Abstract In this work, a review of petrographic studies in recent decades on 50 sandy beach samples of the eastern Canary Islands (La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria) has been carried out in order to know the composition and provenance of the sand grains. The sandy samples are intertidal and most are related to beach-dune systems with coastal desert and arid climates. Thus, these samples contain different proportions of calcareous bioclast, intraclast and volcaniclast grains, ...

Graciosa Island is located in the Azores Archipelago, along the so-called Terceira Rift, NE boundary of the Azores Plateau. From the hydrochemical point of view, two types of Na-Cl groundwater systems were identified: a cold aquifer system emerging at springs and exploited through boreholes for public water supply with different degrees of mineralization, and a hydrothermal system with issuing temperatures around 45°C. Geothermometers applied to the thermal waters point to deep temperature around ...

Future power systems with high penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) and information and communication technology (ICT) will allow increasing the controllability and observability of the grid. However, new challenges for low voltage distribution networks has arisen where the increasing DER is mainly photovoltaic (PV) installed on the roofs of buildings. This type of generation is variable and generates disturbances in the network. Islands are ideal to experience and install new technologies ...

The wood carbonization with high moisture content reduces the yield, prolongs the carbonization time and results in charcoal with low mechanical strength. Considering this, the reuse of carbonization gases as a source of thermal energy becomes a potential alternative for reducing moisture content quickly and feasibly. The objective of this study was to evaluate the artificial drying of logs using gases from the carbonization system of a furnace and a drying chamber. The drying evaluation was conducted ...
