Abstract This study compared the efficacy of XP‐Endo Finisher R and R1‐Clearsonic insert in removing filling material remnants from oval canals. Twelve pairs of contralateral premolars were treated and subsequently retreated with Reciproc 50. A supplementary procedure with XP‐Endo Finisher R or R1‐Clearsonic was performed. Micro‐computed tomography was used to quantify the filling material volume in the full canal and apical segment lengths. Intragroup analyses revealed significant reduction of ...

In an ecological study based on the 18 microregions that form the city of Recife, the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, associations between socio–demographic, environmental and reservoir factors and the incidence of leptospirosis in the city were investigated. Incidence over a 5-year period (2001–2005) and 14 variables were analysed, using central trend and dispersion measurements, Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression. Variables relating to education, income, housing ...

Several studies have investigated the consequences of heavy metal contamination in the vicinity of individual Fe ore mines, however, at present there are no systematic studies that consider the global scenario; this work strives to begin filling that gap. This review includes data reported for metals and pH in soil, overburden, sediment, tailings, and water in the vicinity of Fe mines at sites in 19 countries over the past 15 years. Elements of concern include As, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cu, Cd, Co, Pb, Ni ...

It is controversial whether high salt intake is directly associated with cardiovascular (CV) events and how far this relation is independent of blood pressure (BP). As Portugal has higher salt consumption and higher mortality by stroke than other European countries, we examined whether salt intake could predict the development of stroke and CV events in a hypertensive population. In a longitudinal retrospective study of a cohort of 608 adult treated hypertensive patients 54.1±14.3 years of age, BMI ...

The testes structure of the following Siluriformes was studied: Pimelodus maculatus (Lacepède, 1803), Iheringichtys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) and Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840). The testes of these species were dissected into cranial and caudal regions. The fringes of mature testes were counted and measured. Student's t-test was used to identify significant differences between fringe lengths of the two regions. To study the whole testes of each species in its resting and mature stage, ...

Dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a variable combination of progressive ataxia, epilepsy, myoclonus, choreoathetosis and dementia. This disease is caused by a (CAG)n expansion in the DRPLA gene, on chromosome 12p13. DRPLA is prevalent in Japan, but several families of non-Japanese ancestry have already been published. To identify the origin of expanded alleles in Portuguese families with DRPLA, we studied two previously ...

Abstract This paper contains data on the chemical composition of the essential oils of 22 leaf samples of Piper marginatum Jacq. collected in different areas and ecosystems of the brazilian Amazon, as well as an overview of the available literature. The species presents a large synonymy based on their different leaf characteristics and distinct scents where some of them smell like anise or very close compounds. By GC, GC/MS, and cluster analysis, we identified seven chemotypes for the leaf oils. ...

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound with psychoactive therapeutic properties well described. Conversely, the immunological effects of CBD are still poorly explored. In this study, the potential anti-inflammatory effects and underlying mechanisms of CBD and its analog Dimethyl-Heptyl-Cannabidiol (DMH-CBD) were investigated using RAW 264.7 macrophages. CBD and DMH-CBD suppressed LPS-induced TNF production and NF-kB activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Both compounds reduced the NF-kB activity ...

Evaluations of replacement heifers in intensively managed grazing systems in tropical conditions are warranted. Thus, we aimed to evaluate performance, muscle and mammary gland development, oocyte quality, and in vitro production of embryos of crossbred heifers grazing an intensively managed pasture and supplemented with high or low protein concentrates. Tubular colonic duplications are exceedingly rare; the "Y"-shaped forms are exceptional. In the absence of associated low vertebral or urogenital malformations (often fistulas), the tubular colonic malformations frequently stay hidden for several years until a complication develops. The authors report a case of a spontaneous perforation of a Y-shaped tubular colonic duplication during the neonatal period. J Pediatr Surg 36:1422-1424. Copyright © 2001 by W.B. Saunders Company.

Abstract Understanding the crop diversity is critical for a successful breeding program, helping to dissect the genetic relationship among lines, and to identify superior parents. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of maize ( Zea mays L.) inbred lines and to verify the relationship between genetic diversity and heterotic patterns based on hybrid yield performance. A total of 1,041 maize inbred lines were genotyped‐by‐sequencing, generating 32,840 quality‐filtered single nucleotide ...

This work presents the 210Pb geochronology of seven bottom sediment cores, collected in three floodplain lakes located in the area of the middle Taquari River, Pantanal, Brazil. In five of them, a significant increase in the sediment mass deposition rate was observed, reflecting an increase of the sediment input to the Pantanal. Additionally, in order to validate the 210Pb results, the mercury content was determined for two sediment cores, showing that despite a constant concentration, the flux ...

In this work, a method for chlorine determination in heavy crude oil using pyrohydrolysis for sample decomposition was developed. Chlorine was determined using ion chromatography (IC), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In this case an ICP-MS spectrometer equipped with a dynamic reaction cell (DRC-ICP-MS) was used. Heavy crude oil samples were homogenized and placed on a quartz holder, which was then introduced into the ...
