To analyse age- and gender-related microscopic changes in sublingual glands obtained from human cadavers. One hundred eighty six human sublingual glands were obtained from 93 autopsies. Approximately five individuals of each gender per decade of life were allocated to three age groups: group I (0–30 years, n = 26); group II (31–60 years, n = 32) and group III (61–90 years, n = 35). The specimens were fixed in 10% formalin and submitted to routine histological processing, and sections were stained with hematoxylin ...

The thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption of reactive dyes on high-ash char was studied. Equilibrium data were obtained using the static method with controlled agitation at temperatures in the range of 30 to 60ºC. The Langmuir isotherm model was used to describe the equilibrium of adsorption, and the equilibrium parameters, R L, in the range of 0 to 1 indicate favorable adsorption. The amount of dye adsorbed increased as temperature increased from 30 to 40ºC, but above 40ºC the increase in temperature ...

The production and consumption of mushrooms has increased, resulting in large amount of residue from cultivation, called spent mushroom compost (SMC). This study aimed the active enzymes recovery from SMC of Hypsizygus marmoreus, Flammulina velutipes, Pleurotus eryngii, Lentinula edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus sp. Results indicated that it was possible to recover different types of enzymes (exocellulase, endocellulase, total cellulase, β-glucosidase, dextranase, amylase and laccase) from ...

AbstractNematophagous fungi produce chitinases that may be important in the process of infection of eggs and larvae of nematodes. This study aimed to produce, purify, characterise and test the nematicidal action of extracellular chitinases produced by Monacrosporium thaumasium on Panagrellus redivivus. Mycelia from M. thaumasium were used to inoculate a solid medium for chitinase production. The enzymes were purified using a specific technique of adsorption for chitinases. The chitinase activity ...

Endometrial cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, but there is a lack of diagnostic markers for early detection of these tumours. The raf kinase inhibitory protein (RKIP) negatively regulates the Raf/MEK/ERK pathway, and the downregulation of RKIP is associated with tumour progression and metastasis in several human neoplasms. The aim of this study was to assess the expression levels of RKIP in endometrial cancer and determine whether this expression correlates with clinical ...

Papillary cystadenoma is a rare, benign salivary gland tumor which is well-circumscribed, containing cystic cavities with intraluminal papillary projections. Only 19 cases arising within minor salivary glands (MnSG) from the oral cavity sites have been reported in the English literature (PubMed 1958–2014). We report 11 new cases of MnSG papillary cystadenomas in conjunction with a review of the literature. Demographic information, clinical and histologic features, treatment and prognosis are compiled ...

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare fibro-osseous neoplasm, defined as a variant of the ossifying fibroma that arises within the craniofacial bones. Two subgroups, juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (PsJOF) and juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma, have been delineated by their histology. PsJOF occurs predominantly in the sinonasal and orbital bones. This work reports on 2 cases of extensive PsJOF in the body of the right mandible as well as reviews the literature regarding the radiographic ...

Abstract: Deltamethrin is a commonly used insecticide for controlling its key maize pest, the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lep., Noctuidae). Its toxicological profile is well known, but its impact on arthropods widely reported as bioindicators, mainly springtails (Collembola) and mites (Oribatida), is yet to be assessed in tropical maize fields. The treatments used to circumvent this shortcoming were conventional cultivation and no‐tillage cultivation (with a pre‐sowing application of 2,4‐D ...

The emission of CO2 from power plants that burn fossil fuels is the major cause of the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere. The separation of CO2 from CO2/air mixtures can play a key role in alleviating this problem. This separation can be carried out by using suitable adsorbents, such as carbon molecular sieves. In this work, a CMS was prepared by deposition of polyfurfuryl alcohol polymer on activated carbon. After deposition of the polymer, the material was carbonized at 800ºC for 2 hours. ...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most important greenhouse gases. In the period between 1980 and 1998, CO2 emissions increased more than 21% and projections suggest that the emissions will continue to increase globally by 2.2% between 2000 and 2020 and 3.3% in the developed countries. The sequestration of CO2 in deep unminable coal beds is one of the more promising of several methods of geological sequestration that are currently being investigated. CO2 can adsorb onto coal, and there are several ...

Knowledge of nematophagous fungi has increased dramatically over recent years, particularly with the advancement of molecular biology and omics sciences. However, most of this knowledge is restricted to the three traditional groups of nematophagous fungi: predatorial, opportunistic or ovicidal and endoparasitic. The present study supported the proposed classification of nematophagous fungi into five groups: nematode-trapping/predators, opportunistic or ovicidal, endoparasites, toxin-producing fungi ...

Adsorption processes are responsible for detection of cancer biomarkers in biosensors (and immunosensors), which can be captured with various principles of detection. In this study, we used a biosensor made with nanostructured films of polypyrrole and p53 antibodies, and image analysis of scanning electron microscopy data made it possible to correlate morphological changes of the biosensor with the concentration of cells containing the cancer biomarker p53. The selectivity of the biosensor was proven ...

Abstract Hydrotalcites are receiving considerable attention as adsorbents, catalysts, and catalyst precursors. However, the use of hydrotalcites as an adsorbent material for carbon dioxide has only been considered recently. In this work, three commercial hydrotalcites, Puralox MG30, MG50, and MG70, were used for the removal of CO2 at temperatures in the range 423–623 K. The adsorbent materials were characterized by use of scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x‐ray, mercury porosimetry, ...

The carbons produced were characterized and used for NO adsorption in the absence of oxygen, and the results were compared with those on a commercial activated carbon. The adsorptive and kinetic behavior patterns of NO on different carbons were investigated using the breakthrough curve method for temperatures in the range between 45 °C and 85 °C.
