Larvae of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were reared on tissues from rabbits administered twice the lethal dosage of diazepam in order to study the effects of this drug on the development of these two species. The rabbits were given 50 mg of diazepam via ear vein infusion. From 18 to 54 h, larvae feeding on tissues containing the drug developed more rapidly than larvae from the control colony for both fly species. The time required for pupariation ...

Mandacaru (Cereus jamacaru DC.), is a cactaceous symbol of caatinga vegetation at Brazilian Northeast region, however, there are no much studies about biochemical properties of this species. Here, the pioneering study brings very relevant data to highlight the importance of research with endemic plants of the caatinga. Afterward, the presence of enzymes such as peroxidase, protease, chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, and serine (trypsin) and cysteine (papain) protease inhibitors were evaluated. The peroxidase ...

Trichoderma asperellum produces two extracellular 1,3-β-d-glucanase upon induction with cell walls from Rhizoctonia solani. A minor 1,3-β-d-glucanase was purified to homogeneity by ion exchange chromatography on Q-Sepharose and gel filtration on Sephacryl S-100. A typical procedure provided 13.8-fold purification with 70% yield. SDS–PAGE of the purified enzyme showed a single protein band of molecular weight 27 kDa. The enzyme exhibited optimum catalytic activity at pH 3.6 and 45 °C. It was thermostable ...

Abstract Background The species of T. harzianum are well known for their biocontrol activity against many plant pathogens. However, there is a lack of studies concerning its use as a biological control agent against F. solani , a pathogen involved in several crop diseases. In this study, we have used subtractive library hybridization (SSH) and quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) techniques in order to explore changes in T. harzianum genes expression during growth on cell wall of F. solani (FSCW) or ...

Optimization strategies based on simulated annealing and its variants have been extensively applied to the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Recently, there has appeared a new physics-based metaheuristic, called the microcanonical optimization algorithm (μO), which does not resort to annealing, and which has proven a superior alternative to the annealing procedures in various applications. Here we present the first performance evaluation of μO as applied to the TSP. When compared to three annealing ...

Zika virus (ZIKV) was first discovered in 1947 in Uganda but was not considered a public health threat until 2007 when it found to be the source of epidemic activity in Asia. Epidemic activity spread to Brazil in 2014 and continued to spread throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Despite ZIKV being zoonotic in origin, information about transmission, or even exposure of non-human vertebrates and mosquitoes to ZIKV in the Americas, is lacking. Accordingly, from February 2017 ...

In the last decade, Flaviviruses such as yellow fever (YFV) and Zika (ZIKV) have expanded their transmission areas. These viruses originated in Africa, where they exhibit both sylvatic and interhuman transmission cycles. In Brazil, the risk of YFV urbanization has grown, with the sylvatic transmission approaching the most densely populated metropolis, while concern about ZIKV spillback to a sylvatic cycle has risen. To investigate these health threats, we carried out extensive collections and arbovirus ...

About 160 000 km2 of forests in the border zone between Brazil and Peru are dominated by semi-scandent bamboos (Guadua spp.). We argue that both predicted decreased precipitation during the dry season and widespread anthropogenic disturbances will significantly increase the distribution and biomass of bamboos in the area. Seasonal dryness favours the growth of evergreen bamboos in relation to trees that shed their leaves during the dry season. Disturbance can be beneficial for the bamboo because, ...
