Poly(D,L lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) based nanoparticles (NPs) are proposed for topical delivery of Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in Photodynamic Therapy of skin cancers. PpIX loaded into PLGA NPs showed nanometric average diameter (-280 nm), spherical forms and pH - 5.7, conditions suitable for topical application. In vitro release of PpIX from NPs was sustained up to 24 hr with a burst release effect of about 37.0% at 2 hr. Penetration and distribution of PpIX in hairless mice skin was determined by fluorescence ...

Abstract Background Adult T cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL) is a peripheral T-cell neoplasm caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1). Small RNAs (sRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), play a pivotal role in the initiation and development of hematological malignancies and may represent potential therapeutic target molecules. However, little is known about how these molecules impact the pathogenesis of ATLL. In this study, we aimed to identify sRNA expression signatures associated with ATLL ...

A technical, economic and environmental analysis of different biorefinery configurations is carried out, considering the integration of different biomass technologies with sugar and ethanol plants. Biochemical routes for the production of lignocellulosic ethanol and biobutanol from ABE (Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol) fermentation were considered as alternatives for conversion, also a thermochemical process for the production of syngas. Second-generation ethanol favors better land use, and biobutanol is ...

In 2022, an outbreak of monkeypox is being reported in non-endemic areas, with unusual clinical manifestations. The detailed clinical description of the first patient that received the diagnosis of monkeypox in Brazil is reported here, whose clinical manifestations can easily lead to misdiagnosis of sexually transmitted infections. A 41 years old male presented to an emergency room with a vesicular rash with eight days of evolution. He had traveled to Portugal and Spain and reported non-penetrative ...

Reused water is increasingly requested by farmers worldwide, but there is no legislation in Brazil that contains all the parameters for assessing its quality. This study aimed to compare the legal provisions in Brazil related to the quality parameters of reused water for agriculture (microbiological, physical and chemical) with those described in the main regulations of the United States, drawing a parallel with the Brazilian reality. The study is descriptive, based on queries and collections of ...

ABSTRACT The application of glyphosate associated with other herbicides is an important alternative for weed control in maize, to increase control spectrum and to minimize problems with resistance and tolerance from some species to the product. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy, selectivity and effects on the grain yield components of glyphosate-resistant maize as a function of its application, associated or not with other pre- and postemergence herbicides. The design used ...

In this article, the performance of a hybrid artificial neural network (i.e. scale-free and small-world) was analyzed and its learning curve compared to three other topologies: random, scale-free and small-world, as well as to the chemotaxis neural network of the nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans. One hundred equivalent networks (same number of vertices and average degree) for each topology were generated and each was trained for one thousand epochs. After comparing the mean learning curves of each ...

Lyngbya C. Agardh ex Gomont is a nonheterocytous cyanobacterial genus whose evolutionary history is still poorly known. The traditionally defined Lyngbya has been demonstrated to be polyphyletic, including at least five distinct clades, some of which have been proposed as new genera. Intraspecific diversity is also clearly underestimated in Lyngbya due to the lack of unique morphological characters to differentiate species. In this study, we describe the new genus Capillus T. A. Caires, C. L. Sant' ...

Diphenylditelluride (PhTe)2 is a potent neurotoxin disrupting the homeostasis of the cytoskeleton. Cultured astrocytes and neurons were incubated with (PhTe)2, receptor antagonists and enzyme inhibitors followed by measurement of the incorporation of [32P]orthophosphate into intermediate filaments (IFs). (PhTe)2 caused hyperphosphorylation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), vimentin and neurofilament subunits (NFL, NFM and NFH) from primary astrocytes and neurons, respectively.
