Abstract Emulsification processes usually require the application of external energy to enlarge the interfacial area between both media. We study here a case where practically no external energy is required to form an emulsion, i.e., it is produced spontaneously when both liquids are put in contact in the presence of one surfactant species. We report the observation and measurements of the kinetics of the spontaneous formation and growth of water droplets at the water/oil + lipophilic surfactant ...

(1) Background: Society is changing amazingly fast, and this is bringing about changes in the way that people spend their free time. In the 21st century, free time is increasingly spent using technological devices such as video games, thus increasing levels of sedentariness. The aim of the present study was to define an explanatory model for the problematic use of video games, physical activity, motivational climate in sports, and victimization in schoolchildren, and to analyze the relationships ...

Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure.

The classic dynamic autoregulatory index (ARI), proposed by Aaslid and Tiecks, is one of the most widely used methods to assess the efficiency of dynamic cerebral autoregulation. Although this index is often used in clinical research and is also included in some commercial equipment, it exhibits considerable intra-subject variability, and has the tendency to produce false positive results in clinical applications. An alternative index of dynamic cerebral autoregulation is proposed, which overcomes ...

Although the metastasic breast cancer is still an incurable disease, recent advances have increased significantly the time to progression and the overall survival. However, too much information has been produced in the last 2 years, so a well-based guideline is a valuable document in treatment decision making. The SEOM guidelines are intended to make evidence-based recommendations on how to manage patients with advanced and recurrent breast cancer to achieve the best patient outcomes based on a ...

Two different regions of the infected cell protein 4 (ICP4) gene of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) were amplified and sequenced for characterization of field isolates and tissue culture-origin (TCO) and chicken embryo-origin (CEO) vaccine strains. Phylogenetic analysis of the two regions showed differences in nucleotide and amino acid sequences between field isolates and attenuated vaccines. The PCR-RFLP results were identical to those obtained by DNA sequencing and validated their use to ...

A standardised nested-PCR method that amplifies a region of the glycoprotein E gene of avian infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) has been developed for the diagnosis of infection by Gallid herpesvirus 1. The two sets of primers employed produced the expected amplification products of 524 bp (external primers) and 219 bp (internal primers) in the presence of ILTV DNA, whereas no such amplicons were obtained with other avian respiratory pathogens or with DNA extracted from the cells of uninfected ...

Objective: Peripheral nerve repair is required after traumatic injury. This common condition represents a major public health problem worldwide. Recovery after nerve repair depends on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the nerve involved, and the surgeon's technical skills. Despite the precise microsurgical repair of nerve lesions, adequate functional recovery is not always achieved and, therefore, the regeneration process and surgical techniques are still being studied. Pre- ...

Stability and compatibility can be described by the insolubility number (IN), the solubility blending number (SBN) and the ratio (R) between them, which has become a critical index in daily refineries operation. In this work, a new methodology for predicting the stability and compatibility of heavy crude oils by 1D low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) relaxometry has been developed. Various chemometric models were developed to predict the IN,SBN and R properties of Colombian heavy crude oils (° ...

Different indexes have been proposed in the literature to measure the stability and compatibility of crude oil blends, including the insolubility number (IN), which measures the degree of asphaltene insolubility, and the solubility blending number (SBN), which measures the ability of the oil to dissolve asphaltenes. In this work, various chemometric models were developed to predict the IN and SBN values of Colombian heavy crude oils (°API from 6 to 27), in which the integral areas of the resonance signals, ...

At the end of 2002 and throughout 2003, there was a severe outbreak of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) in an intensive production area of commercial hens in the São Paulo State of Brazil. ILT virus was isolated from 28 flocks, and 21 isolates were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) using four genes and eight restriction enzymes, and by partial sequencing of the infected cell protein 4 (ICP4) and thymidine kinase (TK) genes. Three groups ...

Abstract Aim Optical satellite imagery has been used for mapping the spatial distribution of vegetation structure attributes; however, obtaining accurate estimates with optical imagery can be difficult in tropical forests due to their dense canopy and multi‐layered vegetation. Synthetic aperture radar imagery can be more suitable in this case, as the radar signal can penetrate the forest canopy and interact with stems, providing a better estimation of the vegetation structure. This study compared ...

For a long time, our research team has been successfully using 2 Hz geophones to measure vertical velocities and displacements of rails vibrating as a consequence of high-speed train traffic (200 – 300 km/h). Our aim is to extend the use of geophones to study vertical vibrations of rails also for lower traffic velocities (as low as possible). The lower the train velocity, the more important the low frequencies to describe the rail vibration. Given that below twice the resonant frequency of the geophone ( ...

Tropical dry forests provide goods and ecosystem services that rely on their diversity and are vital for human wellbeing. However, they are among the most threatened ecosystems due mainly to conversion to agriculture. Accurate estimations of species diversity in tropical secondary forests are needed for effective conservation and forest management. We assessed the separate and combined performance of remotely-sensed surrogates of habitat heterogeneity and vegetation structure complexity for predicting ...

A simple and efficient catalytic system based on a Pd complex of 4-aminoantipyrine, 4-AAP-Pd(II), was found to be highly active for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl iodides and bromides with phenylboronic acids under mild reaction conditions. Good to excellent product yields from the cross-coupling reaction can be achieved when the reaction is carried out in ethanol, in the open air, using low loading of 4-AAP-Pd(II) as a precatalyst, and in the presence of aqueous K2CO3 as the base. A variety ...

Abstract The immune response plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection ranging from protection to tissue damage and all occur in the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS patients display elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and innate immune cells, and T and B cell lymphocytes have been implicated in this dysregulated immune response. Mast cells are abundant resident cells of the respiratory tract and are able to release different inflammatory ...
