Background As the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has remained in Latin America, Mexico has become the third country with the highest death rate worldwide. Data regarding in-hospital mortality and its risk factors, as well as the impact of hospital overcrowding in Latin America has not been thoroughly explored. Methods and findings In this prospective cohort study, we enrolled consecutive adult patients hospitalized with severe confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia at ...

The goal of this work was to check the validity of a model previously described for the study of kinetics of the processes taking place during the immuno-analytical measurement of insulin. The antibody was immobilized on the suface wall of the reaction tube. Tracer and insulin concentration, temperature, viscosity and ionic strength in the reaction medium were taken as independent variables. Biexponential kinetics depending on the concentration was observed. The results of the viscosity study show ...

This paper analyses the influence of viscosity and ionic strength on the kinetics and equilibrium of the reactions of (125)I labelled androstendione and aldosterone with their specific antibodies used in the radioactive immunoassay determination of such hormones. Bi-exponential and irreversible kinetics is found for androstendione, and single-exponential and reversible ones for aldosterone. The results of the viscosity analysis reflect clear negative influence on direct reaction rate. Ionic strength ...

Electric power transformers are the link between the generators of a power system and the transmission lines and between lines of different voltage levels. Power transformers undergo changes in their operational life expectancy and reliability over the years. Currently, several tools for diagnosis and assessment of their operational condition are available, including diagnostic techniques based on dissolved gas analysis in the insulating oil. Through monitoring of dissolved gases in oil, it is possible ...

A nanostructured form of molybdenum disulfide/dioxide was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal/gas phase reaction. The material was composed of a solid MoO2 core with MoS2+x crystallites nucleating on its surface. Most of the MoS2+x consisted of nanowires, which are 14 to 30 nm long and are about one MoS2 unit cell wide. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM), electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) and X-ray diffraction were used to ...

The kinetics of insulin reaction has been studied with its specific antibody immobilized on the inner wall of the reaction tube; the radioimmunoanalytical determination of such a substance is based on the reaction. Independent variables were labelled and unlabelled insulin concentrations, temperature, viscosity, and the medium's ionic strength. Biexponential kinetics was found to be dependent on the concentrations fitted to the models discussed in the paper. The effect of temperature shows activation ...

We propose the use of support vector machines (SVMs) for automatic hyperspectral data classification and knowledge discovery. In the first stage of the study, we use SVMs for crop classification and analyze their performance in terms of efficiency and robustness, as compared to extensively used neural and fuzzy methods. Efficiency is assessed by evaluating accuracy and statistical differences in several scenes. Robustness is analyzed in terms of: (1) suitability to working conditions when a feature ...

Coffee is one of the world most traded agricultural commodities. Currently, a lot of attention has been on Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) because it seems to evidence a greater tolerance to extreme climatic events than Arabica coffee (C. arabica L.). Despite this, only a few works have been developed aimed at discriminating the climatic vulnerability in regions which prioritize robust coffee production. The aim of this work was to analyze historical climatic variables in space ...

This Letter proposes the use of the fuzzy sigmoid function presented in (IEEE Trans. Neural Networks 14(6) (2003) 1576) as non-positive semi-definite kernel in the support vector machines framework. The fuzzy sigmoid kernel allows lower computational cost, and higher rate of positive eigenvalues of the kernel matrix, which alleviates current limitations of the sigmoid kernel.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent global health challenge and a critical threat to modern health care. Quantifying its burden in the WHO Region of the Americas has been elusive—despite the region’s long history of resistance surveillance. This study provides comprehensive estimates of AMR burden in the Americas to assess this growing health threat. We estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attributable to and associated with AMR for 23 bacterial pathogens and 88 pathogen– ...

26S proteasome non-ATPase subunits 1 (PSMD1) and 3 (PSMD3) were recently identified as prognostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and multiple solid tumors. Abstract Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have created a global climate crisis which requires immediate interventions to mitigate the negative effects on all aspects of life on this planet. As current agriculture and land use contributes up to 25% of total GHG emissions, plant scientists take center stage in finding possible solutions for a transition to sustainable agriculture and land use. In this article, the PlantACT! (Plants for climate ACTion!) initiative of plant scientists lays out a road map of how ...

A novel fuzzy-based activation function for artificial neural networks is proposed. This approach provides easy hardware implementation and straightforward interpretability in the basis of IF-THEN rules. Backpropagation learning with the new activation function also has low computational complexity. Several application examples ( XOR gate, chaotic time-series prediction, channel equalization, and independent component analysis) support the potential of the proposed scheme.

Although exact causes of Parkinson disease (PD) remain enigmatic, mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly appreciated as a key determinant of dopaminergic neuron susceptibility in both familial and sporadic PD. Two genes associated with recessive, early-onset PD encode the ubiquitin (Ub) kinase PINK1 and the E3 Ub ligase PRKN/PARK2/Parkin, which together orchestrate a protective mitochondrial quality control (mitoQC) pathway. Upon stress, both enzymes cooperatively identify and decorate damaged mitochondria ...

Different diseases lead, during their advanced stages, to chronic or acute liver failure, whose unique treatment consists in organ transplantation. The success of intervention is limited by host immune response and graft rejection. Vivipary implies an active embryonic development with seed germination in the mother plant. The viviparous species are concentrated mainly in tropical and coastal areas with temporary flooding; thus, salinity and moisture are the main factors related to vivipary. This reproductive strategy is a rare event in the Cactaceae; however, vivipary in this family has been reported for 53 species (3.7% of the family). Ferocactus herrerae is a viviparous cactus native of northwestern Mexico, for which it has ...
