The assessment of dependence in older adults currently requires a manual collection of data taken from questionnaires. This process is time consuming for the clinicians and intrudes the daily life of the elderly. This paper aims to semi-automate the acquisition and analysis of health data to assess and predict the dependence in older adults while executing one instrumental activity of daily living (IADL).In a mobile-health (m-health) scenario, we analyze whether the acquisition of data through wearables ...

High-transparency polymers, called optical polymers (OPs), are used in many thin-film devices, for which the knowledge of film thickness (h) and refractive index (n) is generally required. Spectrophotometry is a cost-effective, simple and fast non-destructive method often used to determine these parameters simultaneously, but its application is limited to films where h > 500 nm. Here, a simple spectrophotometric method is reported to obtain simultaneously the n and h of a sub-micron OP film (down to values ...

Abstract Seven 2‐amino‐4‐aryl‐1,3‐thiazoles ( 1a–g ) and their corresponding 2‐aminoacetyl ( 2a–g ) and 2‐aminoacetyl‐5‐bromo ( 3a–g ) derivatives were synthesized and tested in vitro against 11 reference strains, three Gram‐positive and four Gram‐negative bacteria, two yeasts, and two moulds. Toxicity of the compounds was also evaluated using the brine shrimp test. Compounds 1a, 1b, 1e–g , and 3b showed moderate antimicrobial activity at different concentrations. The results indicated that acetylation of the ...

The methanol and water extracts of six Fabaceae species, traditionally used in Mayan medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea and eye infections, were phytochemically screened and tested for in vitro antimicrobial activity. Four species showed activity against Gram positive bacteria, five exhibited some activity against Candida albicans, two exhibited activity against Aspergillus niger and only one, Mimosa pigra, inhibited growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. None of the extracts was active against ...

The population in developed countries is aging and this fact results in high elderly health costs, as well as a decrease in the number of active working members to support these costs. This could lead to a collapse of the current systems. One of the first insights of the decline in elderly people is frailty, which could be decelerated if it is detected at an early stage. Nowadays, health professionals measure frailty manually through questionnaires and tests of strength or gait focused on the physical ...

The design and fabrication of thin-film based organic optoelectronic devices require knowledge of the film optical properties. A low-cost and non-destructive method often used for optical characterization of films is the well-established spectrophotometric envelope method. However, this method is typically limited to thickness above 400 nm, a value often higher than that of the films involved in these devices. This paper studies a procedure to obtain the thickness of sub-400 nm active films from ...

The shape of nanoparticles and nanomaterials is a fundamental characteristic that has been shown to influence a number of their properties and effects, particularly for nanomedical applications. The information related with this feature of nanoparticles and nanomaterials is, therefore, crucial to exploit and foster in existing and future research in this area. We have found that descriptions of morphological and spatial properties are consistently reported in the nanotechnology literature, and in ...

We used virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) to investigate the characteristics of culprit lesions in acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Autopsy studies of patients who died of ACS have shown that culprit atheromatous plaques almost always contain a large lipid-necrotic core covered by a ruptured thin fibrous cap. There are no studies of sufficient size that have assessed the in vivo characterization of plaques responsible for ACS. Patients undergoing angiography for stable ischemic heart ...

The inhibitory effect of different concentrations of lithium (0.15–10×10−3 M) on cAMP production induced by isoprenaline (1×10−4 M) after the blockade of α2-adrenoceptors in the rat cerebral cortex was investigated. Low lithium concentrations (0.3–0.6×10−3 M) exerted a significant inhibitory effect after yohimbine (1×10−5 M) addition, but had no effect when isoprenaline alone or prazosin (1×10−7 M) was added. Melanotropin is a peptide having several functions, including the stimulation of melanogenesis and the modulation of proliferation of melanocytes and melanoma cells. It acts through binding to high‐affinity receptors of the melanocortin‐1 subtype, exclusively expressed in cells of the melanocytic lineage. Elevated levels of immunoreactive α‐melanotropin were previously reported in melanoma cell lines, tumours and plasma from patients with melanoma. Here, we show that this high ectopic production ...
