Alveolar macrophages (AM) of male rats (200-250 g), stressed or not, were evaluated with relationship to superoxide production (SP). Plasma levels of corticosterone were measured. The control group showed larger SP than the stressed group in all intervals of time. Exposure in vitro of AM to a synthetic glucocorticoid for 40 min (the same time of restraint stress) inhibits SP. Therefore, it seems under stress situations there is an increase of plasma levels of corticosterone and a decrease of SP in AM ...

Trichoderma reesei is used for industry-scale production of plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, in particular cellulases, but also xylanases. The expression of the encoding genes was so far primarily investigated on the level of transcriptional regulation by regulatory proteins. Otherwise, the impact of chromatin remodelling on gene expression received hardly any attention. In this study we aimed to learn if the chromatin status changes in context to the applied conditions (repressing/inducing), and ...

Few cases of concurrent leishmaniasis and HIV infection have been reported in Brazil, despite both infections being in expansion. Two cases of visceral leishmaniasis and two cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are discussed. Disseminated skin and oral lesions were found in the patients with the cutaneous form of the disease. Prolonged fever, hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia were the main manifestations of the visceral form. The CD4 T lymphocyte count was low in all cases. Direct examination ...

Literature has shown that, even with the conservative nontraumatic surgical techniques, early repairing surgeries induce changes in the upper dental arch morphologic characteristics in patients with cleft lip and palate. The evaluation of unoperated adult cleft patients enables us to exclude the influence of treatment, emphasizing the morphologic characteristics inherent to the presence of the cleft and its functional counterbalances, that is, the morphologic pattern imposed by cleft. In this study, ...

This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-U.S. institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Despite the recognised antiproliferative and antitumour properties of usnic acid, its therapeutic application has yet to be introduced. In fact, the high hepatotoxicity and low water solubility of usnic acid have somewhat restricted its practical use in anticancer therapy. Dynamic light scattering was used to determine molar mass and polydispersity rigorously. Polymer samples with 70–95% crystallinity, which is an unusual range in PALS studies, were prepared by molten material quenching. ...

In this work, the soap phase residue of neutralization process of palm oil (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) submitted to catalytic cracking to produce gasoline-like hydrocarbons fuels. The cracking reaction carried out in a stirred tank reactor of 143 L, operating in batch mode at 440 °C and 1.0 atmosphere, using 15% (wt.) Na2CO3 as catalyst. The organic liquid products (OLP) yield 71.34% (wt.) with an acid value of 1.07 mg KOH/g and kinematic viscosity of 1.90 mm2s−1, matching sulfur content, copper strip corrosion, ...

The effects of carnauba-based wax on the quality of 'Delta Valencia' orange produced in Ceará state, Brazil, were studied. The fruits were coated with carnauba-based wax and refrigerated (7 ± 2 ºC and 85 ± 2% R.H.) for 28 days. The quality attribute parameters assessed were weight loss, peel color (brightness, hue angle, and chromaticity), peel moisture, pH, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, ascorbic acid, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, yellow flavonoids, and polyphenols. ...

Objective To estimate the association between homicide and suicide rates in Brazilian municipalities over a period of 7 years. Design We conducted a longitudinal ecological study using annual mortality data from 5507 Brazilian municipalities between 2008 and 2014. Multivariable negative binomial regression models were used to examine the relationship between homicide and suicide rates. Robustness of results was explored using sensitivity analyses to examine the influence of data quality, population ...

Violence of all types is a global public health problem. Cash-based incentives can potentially reduce violence outcomes by reducing economic hardership. We aim to deliver a comprehensive systematic review of the relationship between cash-based incentives with a variety of violence outcomes. We searched studies assessing the relationship between cash-based incentives with violence outcomes at PubMed, EMBASE, Global Health and LILACS from the database's creation until July 12th, 2023. We evaluated ...

The chemical recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) residues was performed via glycolysis with ethylene glycol (EG) over Mg-Fe and Mg-Al oxide catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides. Catalysts prepared using the high supersaturation method (h.s.c.) presented a higher surface area and larger particles, but this represented less PET conversion than those prepared by the low supersaturation method (l.s.c.). This difference was attributed to the smaller mass transfer limitations inside ...
