Abstract The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of paramount interest, in the context of both alternative energy applications in fuel cells and for on‐site hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production in environmental remediation applications. Using theoretical and experimental methods, the mechanism involved in the ORR is studied on nitrogen‐doped graphitic carbon materials. The two principal reaction pathways involved in the ORR are the four‐electron pathway producing water (H 2 O), or the two‐electron ...

In this paper, we describe the use of legal ontologies as a basis to improve IT support for professional judges. In the ontology, we emphasize the importance of professional knowledge and experience as an important pillar for constructing the ontology. We describe an intelligent FAQ system for junior judges that intensively uses the ontology.

Ionic conductivity of crosslinked chitosan membranes was studied using techniques of molecular modeling and simulation. The COMPASS force field was used. The simulation allows the description of the mechanism of ionic conductivity along the polymer matrix. The theoretical results obtained are compared with experimental results for chitosan membranes. The analysis suggests that the conduction mechanism is portrayed by the overlapping large Polaron tunneling model. In addition, when the chitosan membrane ...

Several experimental results support the existence of costs associated with exaggerated begging behaviour, which are assumed by some theoretical models of honest signalling in parent-offspring communication. However, to understand how honest begging behaviour is evolutionarily maintained in nature, the long-term cost-benefit output associated with exaggerated signals should also be estimated. As far as we know, the net cost-benefit balance of begging display has not previously been explored. Here, ...

Different tools are being implemented in order to improve the water management in agricultural irrigated areas of semiarid environments. Thermography has been progressively introduced as a promising technique for irrigation scheduling and the assessing of crop-water status, especially when deficit irrigation is being implemented. However, an important limitation is related to the cost of the actual cameras, this being a severe limitation to its practical usage by farmers and technicians. This work ...

There is disagreement among researchers about the distinction between dynamic and static spatial performance. Given that dynamic spatial performance is supposed to be important for some occupations, such as air traffic control (ATC), it is germane to have evidence about the likelihood of that distinction. In the present study, a battery of printed static spatial and reasoning tests were applied to 480 applicants for an ATC training course. Two dynamic spatial tests were also applied. Confirmatory ...

Obligate avian brood parasites lay stronger eggs than their hosts or non‐parasitic relatives because they are rounder and have a thicker eggshell. Additionally, some other characteristics of the brood parasitic eggshells related to their microstructure such as size and orientation of calcite crystal units could also contribute to generating even stronger shells. An eggshell microstructure formed by small randomly oriented calcite crystal units can increase the robustness of the eggshells of birds. ...

In this work, electrolysis and electro-irradiated technologies, i.e. sonoelectrolysis, photoelectrolysis and photosonoelectrolysis have been evaluated in order to improve the biodegradability of soil washing effluents polluted with the herbicide clopyralid. Results obtained showed that simple electrolysis with carbon felt anodes improved the biodegradability of the effluent and that combination of electrolysis with irradiation technologies lead to very different operative results. In this work, a combination of electrochemical and biological technologies is proposed to remove clopyralid from Soil Washing Effluents (SWE). Firstly, soil washing was carried out to extract clopyralid from soil. After that, four different anodes-Ir-MMO, Ru-MMO, pSi-BDD and Carbon Felt (CF)-were evaluated in order to increase the biodegradability of the SWE. CF was selected because was the only one able to transform the pesticide to a more biodegradable compounds without completely mineralizing it. ...

Context-sensitive global analysis of large code bases can be expensive, which can make its use impractical during software development. However, there are many situations in which modifications are small and isolated within a few components, and it is desirable to reuse as much as possible previous analysis results. This has been achieved to date through incremental global analysis fixpoint algorithms that achieve cost reductions at fine levels of granularity, such as changes in program lines. However, ...

The biorefinery concept is attracting scientific and policy attention as a promising option for enhancing the benefits of agri-food biomass along with a reduction of the environmental impact. Obtaining bioproducts based on proteins from agri-food residues could help to diversify the revenue stream in a biorefinery. In fact, the extracted proteins can be applied as such or in the form of hydrolyzates due to their nutritional, bioactive and techno-functional properties. In this context, the present ...

The extraction of bioactive compounds in a biorefinery context could be a way to valorize agri-food byproducts, but there is a remaining part that also requires attention. Therefore, in this work the integrated extraction of phenolic compounds, including the bioactive oleuropein, and proteins from olive mill leaves was addressed following three schemes, including the use of ultrasound. This affected the total phenolic content (4475.5-6166.9 mg gallic acid equivalents/100 g), oleuropein content (675. ...

Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP) is a state-of-the-art machine learning method based on evolutionary computation. GSGP performs search operations directly at the level of program semantics, which can be done more efficiently than operating at the syntax level like most GP systems. Efficient implementations of GSGP in C++ exploit this fact, but not to its full potential. This paper presents GSGP-CUDA, the first CUDA implementation of GSGP and the most efficient, which exploits the intrinsic ...
