Peripheral ossifying fibromas are benign mesenchymal lesions that usually arise in the anterior maxilla of young female patients. Histologically they consist of spindle cell proliferation with focal mineralisation. We reviewed 48 specimens from 41 patients and recorded the clinical data, sex, and age of the patients, site and size of the lesions, treatment, and postoperative outcome. Histologically the presence of mature, woven bone, cementum, and calcifications were evaluated and evaluated immunohistochemically. ...

The ATP6V1C1 gene encodes the C1 subunit of the vacuolar-ATPase (V-ATPase) proton pump. This gene is over-expressed in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) as determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The aim of our study was to perform an immunohistochemical study of the distribution of the C1 subunit in normal epithelium of the oral cavity and in OSCC. We analyzed the expression of the C1 subunit in eight OSCC samples and two normal oral mucosa samples using polyclonal V-ATPase ...

The effects of music on the immune system and cancer development were evaluated in rodents subjected to sound stress. Animals were exposed daily to broad band noise around midnight and/or music for 5 hours on the following morning. Thymus and spleen cellularity, peripheral T lymphocyte population, the proliferative response of spleen cells to mitogen concanavalin A and natural killer cell activity were calculated in BALB/c mice. Sprague Dawley rats were injected i.v. with Walker 256 carcinosarcoma ...

The present study concerns Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) traded as a chilled product. The study was aimed to investigate the effect of including a mixture of organic acids (citric, ascorbic, and lactic) in the icing medium employed during the fish chilled storage. To this end and according to preliminary trials results, an aqueous solution including 0.050% (w/v) of each acid was employed as icing medium; its effect on the microbial activity development in mackerel muscle was monitored for up ...

A key process for post-secondary educational institutions is the definition of course timetables and classroom assignments. Manual scheduling methods require enormous amounts of time and resources to deliver results of questionable quality, and multiple course and classroom conflicts usually occur. This article presents a scheduling system implemented in a Web environment. This system generates optimal schedules via an integer-programming model. Among its functionalities, this system enables direct ...

Immunohistochemical detection of mediators of inflammation, such as P-Selectin, has been proposed to assess vitality of wounds. Forty-five incised cutaneous wounds (24 vital, 14 post-mortem, seven with induced autolysis/putrefaction) were immunostained with antibodies against P-Selectin and CD31. The percentage of stained lumina for P-Selectin out of the total of CD31 positive vessels (P-S/CD31 index) was calculated at both edges of every specimen. In vital samples, the P-S/CD31 index ranged from ...

Oral squamous cell carcinomas represent more than 90% of all head and neck cancers, and comprise about 4% of all malignancies in western countries. Tumor cell mobility related to increasing intracellular pH results in impaired proliferation and metastasis, suggesting an important role of pH regulation in solid cancer tumorigenesis. The mechanism of physiological pH regulation has been shown to be activated in several solid tumors through constitutive activation of the ATPase complex. How cells regulate ...

As, Hg, and Se are the most volatile elements in the flue gas from a coal-fired power plant. Significant amounts of these elements cause an undesired direct gaseous emission, which leads to a serious environmental health risk. The main focus of this study is to evaluate the possibility of simultaneous sampling of these volatile elements using an accurate official method for Hg (the most volatile element). A study of As, Hg, and Se emissions from a 1400 MW coal-fired power plant equipped with electrostatic ...

However, the biotechnological potential of glucanase genes from Trichoderma has been scarcely assessed. In this research, transgenic strawberry plants expressing the β-1,3-glucanase gene bgn13.1 from T. harzianum, under the control of the CaMV35S promoter, have been generated. It is established that the mechanical properties of hydrogels control the fate of (stem) cells. However, despite its importance, a one-to-one correspondence between gels' stiffness and cell behaviour is still missing from literature. In this work, the viscoelastic properties of Poly(ethylene-glycol) (PEG)-based hydrogels - broadly used in 3D cell cultures and whose mechanical properties can be tuned to resemble those of different biological tissues - are investigated by means of rheological measurements ...

A quantitative classification of soil texture is proposed based on an entropic index that can be easily computed from knowledge of the fractional contents of soil textural classes. It is first shown that the index formula supplies a number that agrees with the entropy dimension when the corresponding soil particle-size distribution (PSD) displays self-similar fractal features. In the absence of self-similarity, the index is further shown to retain information-theoretic content so that it becomes ...

Marital dissolution is ubiquitous in western societies. It poses major scientific and sociological problems both in theoretical and therapeutic terms. Scholars and therapists agree on the existence of a sort of second law of thermodynamics for sentimental relationships. Effort is required to sustain them. Love is not enough.Building on a simple version of the second law we use optimal control theory as a novel approach to model sentimental dynamics. Our analysis is consistent with sociological data. ...
