Tourists’ demand for outdoor sport-related activities has been growing in the last decade, leading to the recognition of the outdoor tourism potential of the development of rural and urban areas where the activities could take place. While the literature has recognized this potential, its features and the existing conditions for its practice are often not fully comprehended, mainly due to the lack of measurement systems and performance indicators. This study addresses this gap by proposing a wide- ...

Forest fires can have devastating consequences if not detected and fought before they spread. This paper presents an automatic fire detection system designed to identify forest fires, preferably, in their early stages. The system pipeline processes images of the forest environment and is able to detect the presence of smoke or flames. Additionally, the system is able to produce an estimation of the area under ignition so that its size can be evaluated. In the process of classification of a fire ...

Fecal samples from 291 calves and 176 adult cattle in Northern Portugal were screened for Cryptosporidium and Giardia using a formalin–ethyl acetate concentration method. Acid-fast staining techniques for Cryptosporidium oocyst identification and direct microscopic observation of fecal smears for Giardia cyst identification were performed so as immunofluorescence microscopy examination. Polymerase chain reaction methods were employed to determine the genotype of each isolate. Molecular characterization ...

The performance of three methods to design stiffened panels under predominantly in-plane uniaxial compressive loading is compared by referring to numerical and experimental results. The prediction of the tripping of the stiffeners is also included in the design method in order to complement its scope of application. Experiments on stiffened plates under compression and lateral pressure are also compared with the methods of strength prediction. A method is proposed in order to decrease the bias and ...

This paper presents a proposal for a new design equation to predict the collapse, strength of plates under transverse compression both with restrained and unrestrained boundary conditions. The equation is developed from and calibrated with experimental and numerical results which allows an assessment of the uncertainty involved in its application. Finally, the proposed equation is compared with the predictions of a non-linear finite element code, which was used to verify in a systematic fashion ...

Equations are derived to assess the strength of plates subjected to biaxial compressive loads, including the effect of initial distortions and residual stresses. These equations are then extended to the case of simultaneous lateral pressure loads. In calibrating the proposed methods and in assessing their model uncertainty published results of experiments and of numerical calculations have been used. The proposed methods were shown to be unbiased as regards plate slenderness and aspect ratio. The ...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, disclosing somatic KIT, PDGFRA and BRAF mutations. Loss of function of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) complex is an alternative molecular mechanism in GISTs, namely in carriers of germline mutations of the SDH complex that develop Carney–Stratakis dyad characterized by multifocal GISTs and multicentric paragangliomas (PGLs). We studied a series of 25 apparently sporadic primary wild-type ( ...

Introduction: Cutaneous melanoma represents < 5% of all skin cancers, but is responsible for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. Ocular melanoma is the most common primary eye tumor in adults, and accounts for approximately 5% of all melanomas. Despite new diagnostic and therapeutic tools, the overall survival of patients treated for melanoma has not improved and most patients die of metastatic disease. Therefore, clarification of the molecular mechanisms underlying the etiopathogenesis of ...

The preliminary results of ovarian transplantation in clinical practice are encouraging. However, the follicular depletion caused by ischemic injury is a main concern and is directly related to short-term graft survival. Cell therapy with adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) could be an alternative to induce early angiogenesis in the graft. This study aimed to evaluate ASCs therapy in rat cryopreserved ovarian grafts. A single dose of rat ASC (rASCs) or vehicle was injected into the bilateral ...

This study aimed to evaluate whether a gelatin-based Gelfoam sponge is feasible as a scaffold for adipose tissue-derived stem cell (ASC) therapy in rat frozen-thawed ovarian autografts. Two sets of studies were performed. The in vitro set evaluated ASCs' viability in the Gelfoam scaffold at different times of co-culturing (after 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h). The in vivo set used 20 12-week-old adult female Wistar rats. A major concern in ovarian transplants is substantial follicle loss during the initial period of hypoxia. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been employed to improve angiogenesis when injected into ischemic tissue. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) therapy in the freshly grafted ovaries 30 days after injection. Rat ASCs (rASCs) obtained from transgenic rats expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP)-(5 × 104 cells/ovary) were injected in ...

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a major pathway involved in gastric carcinogenesis occurring in 20% of gastric cancer (GC). However, it is not clear whether MSI phenotype preferentially occurs in the sporadic or familial GC, when stringent inclusion criteria are used. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of MSI and hypermethylation of MLH1 promoter in a large series of familial GC patients (non-HNPCC and non-CDH1-related) and sporadic cases. Additionally, we analysed the immunoexpression ...

Although there are many studies available in literature about biomass pyrolysis or devolatilization using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the effects of important operating parameters have infrequently been investigated for pine wood particle combustion. Consequently, the present study investigates the influence of particle size (63 µm to 1 mm), heating rate (5 to 243 °C/min), and air flow rate (10 to 150 mL/min) on the mass loss of pine wood using TGA.
