Background Antiretroviral treatment (ART) has contributed to increased life expectancy of HIV-1 infected children. In developed countries, an increasing number of children reaching adulthood are transferred to adult units. The objectives were to describe the demographic and clinical features, ART history, antiviral drug resistance and drug susceptibility in HIV-1 perinatally infected adolescents transferred to adult care units in Spain from the Madrid Cohort of HIV-1 infected children. Methods Clinical, ...

In this study, we address a demanding time series forecasting problem that deals simultaneously with the following: (1) intermittent time series, (2) multi-step ahead forecasting, (3) time series with multiple seasonal periods, and (4) performance measures for model selection across multiple time series. Current literature deals with these types of problems separately, and no study has dealt with all these characteristics simultaneously. To fill this knowledge gap, we begin by reviewing all the necessary ...

This work presents a method for simulating axisymmetric and planar free-surface flows dominated by surface tension forces. The surface tension effects are incorporated into the free surface boundary conditions through the computation of the capillary pressure. The required curvature is evaluated by fitting a least squares curve to the free surface using the tracking markers in the cell and in its close neighbors. To avoid short wavelength perturbations on the free surface, a mass-conserving local ...

The objective of this research is to adapt and validate a useful instrument to diagnose cyberbullying, provoked by intolerance towards cultural and religious diversity, identifying the profile of the aggressor and the victim. The study was carried out using the Delphi technique, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The selected sample was composed of 1478 adolescents, all students from Compulsory Secondary Education of Spain. The instrument items were extracted ...

Previous studies have demonstrated increased risk of adverse cardiac outcomes in adults with HIV infection. However, few studies have addressed this problem in vertically HIV-infected children and adolescents, and the long-term cardiac health of this unique population in the antiretroviral therapy era is still unknown.Ventricular function was evaluated cross-sectionally in a group of HIV-infected children and adolescents and healthy controls, using conventional echocardiography along with tissue ...

Background An increasing number of perinatally HIV-infected women (PHIV) are reaching adulthood and becoming pregnant. Most PHIV women have been exposed to a high number of antiretroviral regimens, and they may have difficulties to achieve viral suppression. Psychosocial problems are not uncommon and could be an important barrier for treatment adherence. The effects of chronic HIV infection and long-term exposure to antiretroviral treatment of PHIV women cause concerns on the developing fetus. The ...

Nitrite and selenium are two bioactive compounds found in the environment which show beneficial effects for health at low levels but have toxic effects at higher doses. Consequently, quantification of both analytes in water samples results of great interest in areas such as biomedicine, food technology and environmental analysis. In a recent paper, we immobilized the inclusion complex formed between 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) in a sol-gel matrix, ...

Protease inhibitors (PIs) have been associated with metabolic complications. There is a trend to switch to simpler therapy to improve these disturbances. We report a case-series describing the effects in metabolic abnormalities in seven HIV-infected children, previously treated with protease inhibitor (PI) after switching to nevirapine. Seven children with stable PI-containing regimen and a long lasting HIV-1 RNA < 50 copies/ml were switched to nevirapine. All patients were naïve to non nucleoside reverse ...

The present work explores the potential use of the conjugated cationic polyfluorene {[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl]fluorene-phenylene} bromide (HTMA-PFP) as a fluorescent membrane marker. To this end, the interaction of the polyelectrolyte with anionic model membranes has been investigated using different biophysical approaches. High affinity interaction was confirmed through alterations in the fluorescence spectrum of HTMA-PFP and by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) analysis. Quenching ...

This work describes the development of a novel fluorescent biosensor based on the inhibition of alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The biosensor is composed of the enzyme ALP and the conjugated cationic polyfluorene HTMA-PFP. The working principle of the biosensor is based on the fluorescence quenching of this polyelectrolyte by p-nitrophenol (PNP), a product of the hydrolysis reaction of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) catalyzed by ALP. Because HTMA-PFP forms unstable aggregates in buffer, with low fluorescence ...

Porphyrins bearing formyl or vinyl groups have been explored as starting materials to prepare new compounds with adequate features for different applications. In this review it is discussed mainly synthetic strategies based on the reaction of meso-tetraarylporphyrins bearing those groups at β-pyrrolic positions. The use of some of the obtained porphyrin derivatives for further transformations, namely via pericyclic reactions, is also highlighted.

The interaction of temozolomide (TMZ) (the main chemotherapeutic agent for brain tumors) with blood components has not been studied at the molecular level to date, even though such information is essential in the design of dosage forms for optimal therapy. Absorption and fluorescence experiments with model membranes indicate that TMZ does not penetrate ...

The interaction between the conjugated polyelectrolyte poly{[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl]fluorene-phenylene} bromide (HTMA-PFP) and human serum albumin (HSA) has been investigated from changes observed in both the spectroscopic properties of HTMA-PFP and the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of HTMA-PFP suggest that HTMA-PFP and HSA form polymer-protein complexes due to electrostatic interactions between the cationic side chains of HTMA-PFP and the negatively ...

The design and development of fluorescent conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) emitting in the red region of the visible spectrum is at present of great interest for bioimaging studies. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is commonly used in forest mapping. Full coverage of ALS is already available in some countries to provide high-detailed terrain elevation models. These kinds of data sets have been shown to offer great potential in forest mapping. The mechanism of sensing is based on the fluorescence "turn-on" of L-CPNs by p-nitrophenol (PNP), the end product of the enzymatic hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl-α-d-glucopyranoside. L-CPNs, ...
