The correlation between microstructure, crystallographic orientation and grain boundaries characteristics of an austenitic high manganese steel was systematically investigated. The as-received and cold-rolled specimens with 50% and 70% reduction were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction techniques. A significant increase in the fraction of low-energy Σ3 twin boundaries, from 16.21% to 24.41%, was found in the 70% deformed ...

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests ...

Maria José de Abreu,

My aim in this article is threefold. First, to identify the function of tautology in Catholic Charismatic religious practices. Second, to analyze the formal structure of tautology as an embodied regime of citationality. Third, to expose how Charismatic practice both mirrors and anticipates the unfolding dramaturgy of sovereignty within current populism in Brazil and elsewhere. These aims converge in a reflection on the nature of political theater within and beyond political theology.

Background Low national immunization coverage (44.64%) requires strengthening the vaccination campaign to improve knowledge about HPV and its vaccine among adolescents and parents/guardians. Our aim is to evaluate factors related to knowledge about HPV, its vaccine, acceptability and divergences among Brazilian adolescents and parents/guardians. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed at a health unit of Sao Paulo University, Brazil, from 2015 to 2016. The convenience sample comprised 1047 ...

Clear cell acanthoma or Degos' acanthoma is a distinct disease concerning its clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features. Its pathologic nature - whether neoplastic or reactive - is still under dispute among researchers. The disease shows a chronic course and often presents with a single papulonodular lesion on the lower limbs of adults. However, cases with multiple lesions, sometimes occurring in an eruptive fashion, and with clear variation in the size and shape of the cutaneous ...

Development of new agents capable of regulating eosinophilic inflammation can uncover novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of allergic diseases, such as asthma. Here, we evaluated the anti-allergic properties of an extract of the Brazilian Menispermaceae Cissampelos sympodialis, focusing on its effects on allergic eosinophilia. By studying two models of allergic inflammation, an asthma model and the allergic pleurisy in actively sensitized Balb/c mice, we observed that the oral pre-treatment ...

This article describes the development and psychometric properties of the Asian American Multidimensional Acculturation Scale (AAMAS). The results of 3 separate studies provide strong evidence of the instrument's reliability and validity. The principles for the development of the AAMAS were orthogonality of cultural dimensions, inclusion of a pan-ethnic Asian American dimension, and ease of use across ethnic groups. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicate that within each cultural dimension ( ...

Abstract The authors randomly assigned 69 undergraduates to 1 of 2 perceptual priming conditions involving 80-ms flash words presented on a computer screen to activate information processing outside of conscious awareness. In the high-prime condition, the authors exposed participants to stereotype words associated with the Yellow Peril view of Asian Americans. The authors exposed participants in a low-prime condition to neutral words. All participants then read a vignette and evaluated its protagonist ...

Reactions were assessed by the Rape Empathy Scale, the Attitudes Toward Rape Victim Scale (ARVS), and the Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (RMAS). Results indicated that women reported higher perceptions of empathy, ascribed more credibility toward the rape victim, and were less accepting of rape ...

This article presents theory and selected research on stereotyping and cognitive automaticity as a didactic resource base for multicultural counselor educators. Multicultural trainers can use this information in the classroom to establish the existing scientific evidence indicating that perceptual processes taking place outside of conscious awareness give rise to biased perceptions involving racial or ethnic categories. The objective of this didactic resource is to impress upon counseling trainees ...

We treat the question of new media as an invitation to explore changing conditions of communication across a number of ethnographic locations. It is important to emphasize that none of the contributors perceives new media as a coherent object of attention that can easily be isolated ...

In this article, I show how conceptions of religious authority among Catholic Charismatics in Brazil relate to particular aesthetic regimes. By aesthetic regime I mean the processes of decision-making by which a particular economy of the visible is negotiated and situated, the underlying forces that constitute what is sensory apprehensible and what remains latent, one might say, unworlded. Focusing on the relation Catholic Charismatics have with the statue of Christ Redeemer standing at the Corcovado ...

For some time now technological determinism, a theory that, broadly speaking, explains the relation between technology and humans in terms of historical causation, has been the target of intense criticism. Rather than explained in causational terms, I characterize this sensibility as a tendency to place causes in the future. Placing causes in the future means a conversion of ...
