Abstract The present study investigated both circadian and seasonal fluctuations in the daytime activities of the spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris , from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago in Brazil. The number of dolphins, and aerial, and reproductive activities were documented. The observations were carried out from January 1997 to December 2001. Temporal series and rhythmic characteristics (mesor, rhythmic percentage, and acrophase) were obtained by COSINOR analysis and later compared. The ...

Monocytes are mononuclear phagocytes in peripheral blood that can differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells. Macrophages play a specific role in the inflammatory process and are essential for the innate response. Given the important role of monocytes/macrophages in the immune response, this study aimed to evaluate the activity of kojic acid (KA), a natural product of certain fungal species, on human peripheral blood monocytes in vitro. Purified monocytes isolated from human blood were incubated ...

Nitric oxide (NO) is a cell-signaling molecule that regulates a variety of molecular pathways. We investigated the role of NO during preimplantation embryonic development by blocking its production with an inhibitor or supplementing in vitro bovine embryo cultures with its natural precursor, L-arginine, over different periods. Endpoints evaluated included blastocyst rates, development kinetics, and embryo quality. Supplementation with the NO synthase inhibitor N-Nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME) ...

Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis and Leishmania infantum (=Leishmania chagasi) are protozoa that cause American cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, respectively. These diseases show a high incidence in developing countries such as Brazil. The treatments used for leishmaniasis are still limited due to their high cost and toxicity. Currently, some natural products are considered an important alternative source of new leishmanicidal agents. Euterpe oleracea Martius, a palm producing black fruits, ...

The aim of this paper is to statistically validate the analytical curves of a chromatography method to identify and quantify azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and propiconazole residues in banana pulp, using QuEChERS and GC-SQ/MS. A matrix-matched calibration was used and analytical curves were estimated by weighted least squares regression (WLS), confirming heteroscedasticity for all compounds. Statistical tests were performed to confirm the quality adjustment of the proposed linear model. The correlation ...

The bone marrow is a hematopoietic tissue that, in the presence of cytokines and growth factors, generates all of the circulating blood cells. These cells are important for protecting the organism against pathogens and for establishing an effective immune response. Previous studies have shown immunomodulatory effects of different products isolated from plant extracts. This study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory properties of aqueous Physalis angulata (AEPa) extract on the differentiation of ...

Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by Leishmania protozoans, primarily affects people in tropical and subtropical areas. Chemotherapy based on the use of pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, paromomycin, miltefosine and liposomal amphotericin B is currently the only effective treatment. However, adverse effects, long-term treatment and the emergence of parasite resistance have led to the search for alternative treatments. Natural products used in traditional medicine provide an unlimited ...

The search for new immunopharmacological chemical agents to treat various diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, such as leishmaniasis, for example, has led to the exploration of potential products from plant species and their main active ingredients. Antimonial drugs are the current treatment for leishmaniasis. These drugs cause major side effects and frequent discontinuation of treatment. [Purpose] Spinocerebellar ataxia consists of a group of autosomal dominant disorders that cause progressive degeneration, mainly in the cerebellum and its connections. Falls, which are a significant concern of this condition, reduce patients' mobility, deteriorate their health and have physical and social consequences. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of a modified protocol for improving balance and diminishing the fall risk of spinocerebellar ataxia patients exclusively. [Subjects ...

We present a suitable approach to address the electric vehicle charging roaming problem (e-roaming). Blockchain technologies are applied to support the identity management process of users charging their vehicles and to record energy transactions securely. At the same time, off-chain cloud-based storage is used to record the transaction details. A user wallet settled on a mobile application stores user verified credentials; a backend application in the vehicle charging station validates the user ...

The presence of wear debris in sliding contacts is often regarded as detrimental, since it can increase friction, induce abrasive wear, reduce actual lubricant film thickness and compromise lubrication systems. On the other hand, the presence of debris may be fundamental to the formation of a protective tribolayer, which can reduce friction and wear. This work investigates the effect of the presence of different iron oxides (F2O3 and Fe3O4) with different sizes on the unlubricated reciprocating sliding ...

Background & aims Yacon root is a natural source of fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and it has been studied for its potential effect as a functional food. However, FOS in the in natura root are rapidly hydrolyzed. Thus, the use of dehydrated products such as flour ensures stability of FOS. The effect of chronic consumption of yacon flour on body composition, food intake and of biochemical variables concentration has not yet been evaluated in humans. Thus, we evaluated the effects of yacon flour consumption ...

During abrasive wear, the wear mechanism has been shown to be associated with the movement of the active particles present at the wear interface: rolling, evidenced by indentations on the worn surface, and sliding, which produces scratching and/or ploughing. Abstract The oleoresins of 12 trees of Copaifera reticulata growing wild in the States of Pará and Amapá were examined by GC-FID and GC/MS. The majority oleoresins from Pará possessed high amounts of β-bisabolene (18.4–42.4%) and trans-α-bergamotene (11.8–29.6%). The oleoresins from Amapá were rich in β-caryophyllene (27.8–68.0%), β-selinene (0.2–20.6%) and β-bisabolene (3.7–17.8%). The results showed a high variation in the composition of the components of the oleoresins of C. reticulata.

Abstract The oleoresins of Copaifera paupera, C. piresii and C. pubiflora were examined by GC-FID and GC/MS. The oleoresins of C. paupera and C. piresii were characterized by a high percentage of α-copaene (42.5% and 45.5%), followed by β-caryophyllene (14.1% and 10.3%) and δ-cadinene (10.4% and 13.7%, respectively). The oleoresin of C. pubiflora was dominated by β-caryophyllene (65.9%).

Abrasive wear is currently classified according to different particle dynamics: (a) the sliding of active particles on the sample surface and (b) the rolling of abrasive particles between the surfaces. In this paper, instrumented laboratory tests are used to present a new methodology for the simulation of abrasive wear. The rolling of the abrasives is represented by a sequence of indentations, and the sliding of the active particle by a sequence of scratches. A new piece of equipment was especially ...
