Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are considered to be the most important vectors of disease-causing pathogens in domestic and wild animals, and emerging and re-emerging tick-borne diseases (TBD) exert an enormous impact on them. Wild ungulates are hosts for a wide variety of tick species and tick-borne pathogens that affect human and animal health. Consequently, the control of tick infestations and tick-borne pathogen prevalence is essential in some regions. Acaricides and animal management or culling have ...

Two regioisomeric series of diaryl 2- or 4-amidopyrimidines have been synthesized and their adenosine receptor affinities were determined in radioligand binding assays at the four human adenosine receptors (hARs). Some of the ligands prepared herein exhibit remarkable affinities (Ki < 10 nm) and, most noticeably, the absence of activity at the A1, A2A, and A2B receptors. The structural determinants that support the affinity and selectivity profiles of the series were highlighted through an integrated ...

Little information is available about gene expression in natural mycobacterial infection of wildlife species. Iberian red deer can serve as reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis in Spain, thus increasing the risk of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in humans and cattle. Herein, we characterized the differential expression of inflammatory and immune response genes in mesenteric lymph nodes of deer naturally infected with M. bovis using microarray hybridization. Results were validated by determination of serum ...

This study analyses the returns on human capital in the Spanish hospitality and travel agency industries across seven occupational categories by gender. It is motivated by evidence that there is great variation between jobs in this sector and that estimations of the rate of returns for each component of human capital for the entire sector may not be accurate. The main results indicate that the rates of return on human capital are lower in these industries for most occupations than in the private ...

Abstract We provide an overall description of the Ciao multiparadigm programming system emphasizing some of the novel aspects and motivations behind its design and implementation. An important aspect of Ciao is that, in addition to supporting logic programming (and, in particular, Prolog), it provides the programmer with a large number of useful features from different programming paradigms and styles and that the use of each of these features (including those of Prolog) can be turned on and off at ...

Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been established as a useful tool for detecting hydrocarbon spillage on the ocean's surface. Several surveillance applications have been developed based on this technology. Environmental variables such as wind speed should be taken into account for better SAR image segmentation. This paper presents an adaptive thresholding algorithm for detecting oil spills based on SAR data and a wind field estimation as well as its implementation as a part of a functional ...

Abstract In late summer 2010 a mosquito born flavivirus not previously reported in Europe called Bagaza virus (BAGV) caused high mortality in red-legged partridges ( Alectoris rufa ) and ring-necked pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ). We studied clinical findings, lesions and viral antigen distribution in naturally BAGV infected game birds in order to understand the apparently higher impact on red-legged partridges. The disease induced neurologic signs in the two galliform species and, to a lesser extent, ...

Despite the use of chemical acaricides, tick infestations continue to affect animal health and production worldwide. Tick vaccines have been proposed as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for tick control. Vaccination with the candidate tick protective antigen, Subolesin (SUB), has been shown experimentally to be effective in controlling vector infestations and pathogen infection. Furthermore, Escherichia coli membranes containing the chimeric antigen composed of SUB fused ...

The prevalence of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens has been declining during the past decades in northeastern Hungary, and no cases have been observed since 2008. Infections of cattle with B. major and Theileria buffeli were hitherto reported in southern and western Europe. The study was then extended using GBS and spinal cord injury unrelated patients with similar medications and healthy individuals. The early growth response ...

Background Adenosine is a metabolite that suppresses antitumor immune response of T and NK cells via extracellular binding to the two subtypes of adenosine-2 receptors, A 2 ARs. While blockade of the A 2A ARs subtype effectively rescues lymphocyte activity, with four A 2A AR antagonists currently in anticancer clinical trials, less is known for the therapeutic potential of the other A 2B AR blockade within cancer immunotherapy. Recent studies suggest the formation of A 2A AR/A 2B AR dimers in tissues ...

In the key step, ammonolysis of the common intermediate (±)-(1β,3β,4α)-4-benzoyloxymethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic anhydride and subsequent esterification afford near-equimolar amounts of two easily separable isomeric carbamoyl esters.
