Background:Paclitaxel, a widely-used antineoplastic drug, produces a painful peripheral neuropathy that in rodents is associated with peripheral-nerve mitochondrial alterations. The sigma-1 receptor (σ1R) is a ligand-regulated molecular chaperone involved in mitochondrial calcium homeostasis and pain hypersensitivity. This receptor plays a key role in paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain, but it is not known whether it also modulates mitochondrial abnormalities. In this study, we used a mouse model ...

The mortality rate of patients with cases of enterococcal bacteremia is high, although it has often been related to the patients' underlying conditions rather than to the infection itself. To analyze the attributable prognosis of enterococcal bacteremia (assessed by its attributable mortality rate and duration of hospital stay), a prospective, matched case-control study was done. All adults with an episode of enterococcal bacteremia without endocarditis were included. A control patient was randomly ...

Its therapeutic effectiveness was analyzed when it was administered through subcutaneous injection, to sick animals in the consolidation stage of mange (third phase) and, with double injections to chronically affected animals (fourth phase) at a dosage of 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg body weight (bw). ABSTRACT Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is classified into seven major genotypes and 67 subtypes. Recent studies have shown that in HCV genotype 1-infected patients, response rates to regimens containing direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are subtype dependent. Currently available genotyping methods have limited subtyping accuracy. We have evaluated the performance of a deep-sequencing-based HCV subtyping assay, developed for the 454/GS-Junior platform, in comparison with those of two commercial assays (Versant ...

Chloride (Cl–) is a micronutrient that accumulates to macronutrient levels since it is normally available in nature and actively taken up by higher plants. Besides a role as an unspecific cell osmoticum, no clear biological roles have been explicitly associated with Cl– when accumulated to macronutrient concentrations. To address this question, the glycophyte tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. var. Habana) has been treated with a basal nutrient solution supplemented with one of three salt combinations ...

This work centered on dealing with fuzzy attributes and fuzzy values and only the universal quantifier was taken into account since it is the inherent quantifier in classical relational division. The pathogenesis of liver fibrosis requires activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs); once activated, HSCs lose intracellular fatty acids but the role of fatty acid oxidation and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) in this process remains largely unexplored.CPT1A was found in HSCs of patients with fibrosis. Chloride (Cl- ) has been recently described as a beneficial macronutrient, playing specific roles in promoting plant growth and water-use efficiency (WUE). However, it is still unclear how Cl- could be beneficial, especially in comparison with nitrate (NO3- ), an essential source of nitrogen that shares with Cl- similar physical and osmotic properties, as well as common transport mechanisms. In tobacco plants, macronutrient levels of Cl- specifically reduce stomatal conductance (gs ) without a concomitant ...

Chloride (Cl−) has traditionally been considered a micronutrient largely excluded by plants due to its ubiquity and abundance in nature, its antagonism with nitrate (NO3−), and its toxicity when accumulated at high concentrations. In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in this regard since Cl− has gone from being considered a harmful ion, accidentally absorbed through NO3− transporters, to being considered a beneficial macronutrient whose transport is finely regulated by plants. As a beneficial ...
