To evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of sildenafil among Brazilian patients with hypertension treated with combinations of anti-hypertensive drugs. One hundred twenty hypertensive men aged 30 to 81 years old under treatment with 2 or more anti-hypertensive drugs and with erectile dysfunction (ED) lasting for at least 6 months were enrolled at 7 research centers in Brazil. Patients were randomized to receive treatment with either sildenafil or placebo taken 1 hour before sexual intercourse ( ...

In this study we investigated the possible use of human demineralised dentine matrix (DHDM), obtained from the extracted teeth, as bone graft material and evaluated the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced by this material in the healing process of tooth sockets of rats. To evaluate bone regeneration and expression of VEGF induced by DHDM, thirty-two male Wistar rats weighing approximately 200 g were used. After maxillary second molar extraction, the left sockets were filled ...

Considering the potential use of growth factors carried by liposomes for bone repair, this study aimed to assess the progress of bone healing process in injured alveoli of rats after administering EGF within liposomes. For this assessment we used 48 male Wistar rats that had their maxillary second molar extracted and separated into 5 groups: sockets filled with blood clot (BC), treated with empty liposome (L), PBS (P), EGF in PBS (EGF-P) and EGF in liposome (EGF-L). The animals were sacrificed after ...

In this work we evaluated the bone-forming potential of BMP4, TGFβ1 and BMP4/TGFβ1 mixed by performing histological and morphometric analysis. We also evaluated the immunolabelling of fibronectin (FN) and collagen type III (Col III), two determinant proteins for the early phase of bone repair. Histological, histomorphometric and immunohistochemistry analysis were used to evaluate new bone and blood vessels formation as well as fibronectin and collagen type III expression. 112 male Wistar rats weighing ...

A simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) is the best treatment option for type I diabetic patients with advanced chronic renal failure. Infectious complications affect 7-50% of the patients receiving this procedure. We conducted a nested case-control study to assess the risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) in patients receiving SPKT at our centre between 2000 and 2006. Of the 119 evaluated transplant recipients, 55 (46.2%) developed SSIs and the 30 day mortality was 11.8%. Gram- ...

Children with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction can be managed successfully by surgical intervention and should be evaluated for potential meso-Rex bypass. A Rex shunt variation is described to treat portal and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis. This technique uses the internal jugular vein as a conduit between the splenic vein and the left portal vein with splenic preservation.

ALK-rearranged lung cancers exhibit specific pathologic and clinical features and are responsive to anti-ALK therapies. Therefore, the detection of ALK-rearrangement is fundamental for personalized lung cancer therapy. Recently, new molecular techniques, such as NanoString nCounter, have been developed to detect ALK fusions with more accuracy and sensitivity. In the present study, we intended to validate a NanoString nCounter ALK-fusion panel in routine biopsies of FFPE lung cancer patients. Abstract Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer worldwide. The mutational frequency of EGFR and KRAS genes in lung adenocarcinoma varies worldwide per ethnicity and smoking. The impact of EGFR and KRAS mutations in Brazilian lung cancer remains poorly explored. Thus, we investigated the frequency of EGFR and KRAS mutations in a large Brazilian series of lung adenocarcinoma together with patients’ genetic ancestry, clinicopathological and sociodemographic characteristics. The mutational frequency of ...

The proper nodal staging of non-small cell lung cancer is important for choosing the best treatment modality. Although computed tomography remains the first-line imaging test for the primary staging of lung cancer, its limitations for mediastinum nodal staging are well known. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of hybrid single-photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography using 99mTc-sestamibi in the nodal staging of patients with non-small cell lung cancer and to identify ...

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer worldwide and in Brazil. Despite strong evidence, lung cancer screening by low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in high-risk individuals is far from a reality in many countries, particularly in Brazil. Congenital tracheobiliary fistula is an extremely rare malformation which involves an anomalous connection between respiratory and biliary trees. There are few cases described on literature, and so far at the moment there are 36 cases described. Patients usually show up with respiratory distress and bile stained expectoration. Introduction Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the intracellular protozoan Leishmania donovani complex. VL may be asymptomatic or progressive and is characterized by fever, anemia, weight loss and the enlargement of the spleen and liver.
