We estimated the degree of exposure to lindane and endosulfan in the blood of booted eagle nestlings (Hieraaetus pennatus) (1999–2003), in order to assess the usefulness of these samples as a unit for monitoring changes in exposure as a result of shifts in agricultural practices and the implementation of legal measures. The highest blood lindane concentrations were obtained 1 year prior to its prohibition by the European Union. Subsequent to that year, the drop in blood concentrations was dramatic. ...

The recent introduction of wireless head-mounted displays (HMD) promises to enhance 3D image visualization by immersing the user into 3D morphology. This work introduces a prototype holographic augmented reality (HAR) interface for the 3D visualization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for the purpose of planning neurosurgical procedures. The computational platform generates a HAR scene that fuses pre-operative MRI sets, segmented anatomical structures, and a tubular tool for planning an access ...

NPC1 is a 25-exon gene located on the long arm of chromosome 18q11.2 and encodes NPC1, a transmembrane protein comprising 1278 amino acid residues. Mutations in the NPC1 gene can cause Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C), a rare autosomal-recessive neurovisceral disease. We assessed mutant protein folding using computer-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and molecular docking of the three most common NPC1 mutations, all of which result in changes in a cysteine-rich luminal loop region of the ...

Background Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common in adolescents worldwide. Vulnerability to STIs increases with risky sexual practices. This study described the sexual practices, estimated the prevalence of STIs, and identified correlates associated with STIs among participants, enrolled in public high schools, in the District of Panama, Panama. Methods A cross sectional study, using multistage cluster sampling, was conducted among participants, aged 14–18 years, enrolled in public high ...

Anticonvulsant properties have been attributed to extracts of the herbal medicine Valeriana officinalis. Our aims were to examine the anticonvulsant properties of valerenic acid and valerian extracts and to determine whether valerian preparations interact with the activity of other anti-epileptic drugs (phenytoin or clonazepam). To achieve these goals, we validated the adult zebrafish, Danio rerio, as an animal model for studying anticonvulsant drugs. All drug treatments were administered by immersion ...

Valerian extract is used in complementary and alternative medicine for its anxiolytic and sedative properties. Our previous research demonstrated valerian interactions with glutamate receptors. The purpose of this study was to determine if valerian anxiolytic properties are mediated by metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) such as mGluR (1/5) (mGluR I) and mGluR (2/3) (mGluR II). Adult wild-type zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) prefer the black compartment and avoid the white compartment in the dark/light preference ...

The effects of two valerian extracts (aqueous and hydroalcoholic) were investigated through [(3)H]Glutamate ([(3)H]Glu) and [(3)H]Fluorowillardine ([(3)H]FW) receptor binding assays using rat synaptic membranes in presence of different receptor ligands. In addition, the extract stability was monitored spectrophotometrically. Both extracts demonstrated interaction with ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs). However, the extracts displayed considerable differences in receptor selectivity. The hydroalcoholic ...

Abstract Most organochlorine (OC) use has been banned in Spain, but these compounds are persistent and may still adversely affect predatory birds. Data generally are lacking, however. Residues of hexachlorobenzene, α‐hexachlorocyclohexane, lindane, hexachloro‐octahydro‐epoxy‐dimethanonaphthalene, DDT, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in 22 failed eggs of booted eagles ( Hieraaetus pennatus ) and goshawks ( Accipiter ...

Abstract In order to increase competitiveness among individual producers and to encourage their integration, the federal government of Mexico has pursued the establishment, at both the state and national levels, of supply chains, or Sistema Producto (SP). For fisheries and aquaculture, 33 SPs exist at the state level and 7 at the national level, 1 of them for tilapia. The objective of this study is to carry out a foresight analysis (FA) of 4 tilapia SPs in Mexico—for the States of Colima, Sonora, ...

Abstract The manufacturing process of heavy section ductile iron castings is strongly influenced by the risk of graphite degeneration under slow cooling rates. Appearance of this kind of defect is commonly linked to significant reductions in the mechanical properties of large castings. Studies on the effect of inoculation on chunky graphite formation in heavy sections have led to contradictory results in the literature and this triggered the present work. New experimental data are presented on the ...

Magnetite nanoparticles were supported on carbon paste electrode and characterized by low scan rate voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to obtain mechanistic information related to its oxidation and reduction in acid media. The voltammograms showed only one reduction and one oxidation peak for the supported magnetite, which were attributed to formation of ferrous ion and ferric oxide, respectively. Both peaks are fairly wide, indicating complex mechanisms. Using EIS, a mechanism ...

With few differences in timing, future studies in Latin America were initiated with a linear conception of reality. Orchestrated with techniques such as the Delphi, future studies were supported by mathematical principles of probability. Several countries have surpassed this stage while moving into strategic foresight. Strategic foresight analyzes the future as a multiple reality. In other words, it means thinking differently and not reading reality in a linear manner. It means accepting that there ...

This article seeks to revise and question the cultural politics through which Third World film criticism has historically constructed Latin American continental and national film canons. To this end it reassesses the highly politicized notion of an imperfect, marginal or alternative cinema promoted in the 1960s by filmmakers like the Brazilian Glauber Rocha and the Cuban Julio Garca Espinosa by looking at the contemporaneous exploitation cinema of Brazils Jos Mojica Marins. The article suggests ...

This paper focuses on the study of protection against corrosion by means of a thick polyurethane film. Noise resistance, Rn, calculated from a series of potential and current noise measurements, shows that electrochemical noise (EN) technique was able to monitor corrosion under coated metals even when applied at high thicknesses. By using spectral analysis, the nature of the attack on the metallic surface was determined; indeed, the characteristics of the corrosion process were determined even from ...

Global change drivers including eutrophication, hydrological disturbance, climate change, chemical pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and land-use change are affecting the function and structure of freshwater ecosystems.
