The aim of this study was to describe a series of 10 cases of oral-maxillofacial myiasis, discussing its main features, demographic distribution, and treatment aspects.A retrospective study was carried out involving male and female patients of any age with oral-maxillofacial myiasis. The sample was determined by spontaneous demand at the emergency ward of a hospital between January 2005 and January 2011 (6 years). After treatment of each case, data were gathered on the presence of associated systemic ...

Background: Evidence on the efficacy of smartphone applications (apps) for reducing body weight and other measurements of adiposity sustainably is not conclusive. Objective: To evaluate the effect of adding an app for 3 months to traditional counselling on physical activity (PA) and a heart-healthy diet for the modification of measurements of adiposity at 3 and 12 months after intervention. Methods: This randomised clinical trial included 833 subjects. The counselling and app group (IG) had 415 subjects, ...

Renal ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI) is the main cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI induces the development of cardiac hypertrophy (CH) during cardiorenal syndrome (CRS), and cardiomyocyte calcium mishandling though systemic inflammation after 8 days of renal IRI. Klotho has recently been described as an anti-inflammatory component. Given this, Klotho treatment could prevent or attenuate the inflammation, thereby also preventing electrical cardiac outcomes incurred by CRS. The aim of this ...

Abstract Questions What is the relative importance of direct herbivory compared to microsite modification in ungulate impacts on secondary forest succession? Do domestic ungulate impacts differ between small‐seeded pioneers and large‐seeded late successional species? Location Birch–beech secondary forest ( B etula celtiberica and F agus sylvatica ), B izkaia, N orthern S pain. Methods We conducted a detailed spatial analysis of 216 permanent 1‐m 2 subplots that were distributed among six plots, of which ...

Shrub seedling emergences were studied in a beech‐birch forest in the Basque Country (Spain). During four years (1998–2001) all emerging shrubs were tagged and regularly monitored in 198 1 m 2 plots. Seedling emergence was intense during the entire study period and primarily occurred in early spring. Emerging seedlings mainly belonged to Hedera helix , Rubus gr. glandulosus and several heath species (including genera Erica , Calluna and Daboecia ). In contrast, some dominant species components of the shrub ...

The widespread use of pesticides in agriculture has been linked to declines in bee populations worldwide. Imidacloprid is a widely used systemic insecticide that can be found in the pollen and nectar of plants and has the potential to negatively impact the development of bee larvae. We investigated the effects of oral exposure to a realistic field concentration (20.5 ng g-1) of imidacloprid on the midgut and fat body of Apis mellifera worker larvae. Our results showed that larvae exposed to imidacloprid ...

Herbicides improve the productivity of a monoculture by eliminating weeds, although they may also be toxic and have negative effects on non-target organisms, such as amphibians. The present study evaluated the genotoxic, mutagenic, and histopathological hepatic responses of Dendropsophus minutus tadpoles to acute exposure (96 h) to the herbicide glyphosate (GLY, 65, 130, 260 and 520 μg/L) and the surfactant polyoxyethylene amine (POEA, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 μg/L). • The density and identity of tree neighbourhood is a key factor to explain tree mortality in forests, especially during the stem exclusion phase. • To understand this process, we built a logistic model for mortality in a spatially explicit context, including tree and neighbourhood predictors. Additionally, we used this model to build mortality risk frequency distributions. Finally, we tested this model against a random mortality model to predict the spatial pattern of the forest. • Annual mortality rate ...

Abstract Microlicia stenodonoides is herein described and illustrated. It is distinguished from other Microlicia species by its remarkable dwarf arboreal habit, main stem 5–10 cm in diameter with leaf scars, leaves up to 4.5 cm long, grouped in the apex of terminal branches, and large flowers (up to 4 cm in diameter). The set of characters presented by M. stenodonoides is similar to that of species of the genus Stenodon. However, it is ascribed to the genus Microlicia especially due to stems without ...

Glecaprevir was identified as a potent HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitor, and an enabling synthesis was required to support the preclinical evaluation and subsequent Phase I clinical trials. The enabling route to glecaprevir was established through further development of the medicinal chemistry route. The key steps in the synthesis involved a ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction to form the 18-membered macrocycle and a challenging fluorination step to form a key amino acid. The enabling route was successfully ...

We present new rock magnetic and paleomagnetic data of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) lavas cropping out in the Algarve basin (southern Portugal). Our results show that the magnetic mineralogy of the selected samples is primary and dominated by an assemblage of single-domain (SD) to multi-domain (MD) Ti-poor titanomagnetites. All samples carry a characteristic remanent magnetization of normal (positive) magnetic polarity, similarly to other circum-Atlantic CAMP lava sequences. Except for ...

The West and SouthWest Margins of Iberia started their formation as intra-continental rifts during initial break up of Pangea in Triassic times. The tectono-stratigraphic record of the Algarve, Alentejo and Lusitanian basins and their offshore prolongation documents the syn-rift, post-rift and passive margin phases of the rifting process as well as three magmatic cycles of tholeiite to alkaline affinities. Although the Ocean-Continent Transition has been investigated using deep ocean drilling, seismics, ...

The Cretaceous paleogeography and the kinematic evolution of the Iberian plate are poorly constrained. Especially problematic is to reconcile Iberian paleomagnetic data with paleomagnetic data of the neighboring plates and with Euler poles derived from seafloor magnetic anomalies. The first limitation arises from the Cretaceous Normal Polarity Superchron where paleogeographic reconstruction using marine magnetic anomalies is handicapped. The second arises from the paucity of reliable paleomagnetic ...

Abstract. Seed bank spatial pattern was studied in a secondary forest dominated by Fagus sylvatica and Betula celtiberica in the Urkiola Natural Park (N Spain). Soil samples were taken every 2 m in a regular grid (196 points) and divided into two fractions (0–3 cm and 3–10 cm deep). The viable seed bank was studied by monitoring seedling emergence for ten months. The effect of different factors on seed bank composition and patterning was analysed using constrained ordination as a hypothesis testing ...
