Although exercise speed is an acute variable to prescribe abdominal strengthening programs, current literature lacks studies analyzing the influence of speed on muscular activation in abdominal exercises. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of trunk curl-up speed on the amplitude of muscular activation and the way in which the trunk muscles were coactivated. Twenty recreationally trained volunteers (16 women and 4 men; age, 23.7 ± 4.3 years; height, 166.2 ± 6.3 cm; mass, 61.0 ± 8.2 kg) ...

Glass waste used in mortars or concretes behaves similar to cement, with resulting environmental benefits. In this light, the behavior of glass powder of various particle sizes has been analyzed as a cement replacement in mortars, in an attempt to minimize the loss of strength and durability, and maximize the amount of materials replaced. The dry density, water accessible porosity, water absorption by immersion, capillary absorption coefficient, ultrasonic pulse velocity and both compressive and ...

The action patterns of liver and muscle glycogen synthetases and of muscle phosphorylase b on glycogen samples of different molecular weight and on β‐amylase limit dextrins were studied. For this purpose a method for measuring the number of newly added glucose residues that are at non‐reducing ends was developed. It was found that glucose transfer to the non‐reducing ends of glycogen catalyzed by liver glycogen synthetase and muscle phosphorylase followed a Poisson distribution. The number of outer ...

This paper reports the characterization of a new ABC transporter (LtrABC1.1), related to the human ABCA subfamily, in the protozoan parasite Leishmania tropica. LtrABC1.1 is a tandem duplicated gene flanked by inverted repeats. LtrABC1.1 is expressed mainly in the flagellar pocket of the parasite. Drug resistance studies in Leishmania overexpressing LtrABC1.1 showed the transporter not to confer resistance to a range of unrelated drugs. LtrABC1.1 appears to be involved in lipid movements across the ...

In a 2200-km2 area in the lower Ucayali River, eleven types of vegetation have been determined: ten are forests and one is floating meadows (aquatic macrophytes). Forest ecosystems cover 2133 km2 (97%) of which 1335 km2 (61%) are wetlands with six types of forests, two under the influence of local rainfall and the other four related to the flooding pattern of the Ucayali River. Fifteen villages are located in the study area, twelve of them in flooding areas. Most of the economic activities of approximately ...

Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength. The prevalence in people between 60-70 years is about 5-13% and in adults over 80 years, between 11-50% in the USA. Sarcopenia increases the risk of mortality and nosocomial infections. Community-acquired pneumonia is the first infectious-related cause of death in elderly people. However, there is lack of evidence about the association between sarcopenia and pneumonia. Polyglutamine expansion in androgen receptor (AR) is responsible for spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) that leads to selective loss of lower motor neurons. Using SBMA as a model, we explored the relationship between protein structure/function and neurodegeneration in polyglutamine diseases. We show here that protein arginine methyltransferase 6 (PRMT6) is a specific co-activator of normal and mutant AR and that the interaction of PRMT6 with AR is significantly enhanced in the AR mutant.
