We report the first detailed characterization of the sheet third-harmonic optical susceptibility, χ(3)s, of tungsten diselenide (WSe2). With a home-built multiphoton microscope setup developed to study harmonics generation, we map the second and third-harmonic intensities as a function of position in the sample, pump power and polarization angle, for single- and few-layers flakes of WSe2. We register a value of |χ(3)s| ≈ 0.9 × 10-28 m3 V-2 at a fundamental excitation frequency of ℏω = 0.8 eV, which is comparable ...

In Brazil, Aedes aegypti resistance to temephos, used since 1967, was detected in several municipalities in 2000. Organophosphates were substituted by pyrethroids against adults and, in some localities, by Bti against larvae. However, high temephos resistance ratios were still detected between 2001 and 2004. Field-simulated assays confirmed a low temephos residual effect. Acethylcholinesterase and Mixed Function Oxidase profiles were not altered. In contrast, higher Esterase activity, studied with ...

Aedes aegypti populations in Brazil have been subjected to insecticide selection pressures with variable levels and sources since 1967. Therefore, the Brazilian Ministry of Health (MoH) coordinated the activities of an Ae. aegypti insecticide resistance monitoring network (MoReNAa) from 1999 to 2012.The objective of this study was to consolidate all information available from between 1985 and 2017 regarding the resistance status and mechanisms of Brazilian Ae. aegypti populations against the main ...

The selection of donors for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is one of the most important features in this kind of surgery. The aim of this study is to describe our initial experience in the donor evaluation process. From December 2001 to January 2005, 104 donors were evaluated for 70 recipients (65 potential donors were evaluated for 39 adult recipients, and 39 donors for 31 pediatric recipients). Only 30 donors were able to donate: 13 for the adult group, and 17 for the pediatric one. In ...

Human hotspot TERT promoter (TERTp) mutations have been reported in a wide range of tumours. Several studies have shown that TERTp mutations are associated with clinicopathological features; in some instances, TERTp mutations were considered as biomarkers of poor prognosis. The rs2853669 SNP, located in the TERT promoter region, was reported to modulate the increased TERT expression levels induced by the recurrent somatic mutations. In this study we aimed to determine the frequency and prognostic ...

We study the magnetization of square and hexagonal graphene dots. It is shown that two classes of hexagonal dots have a second-order phase transition at a critical Hubbard energy $U$, whose value is similar to the one in bulk graphene, albeit the dots do not have a density of states proportional to the absolute value of the energy, relatively to the Dirac point. Furthermore, we show that a particular class of hexagonal dots, having zigzag edges, does not exhibit zero-energy edge states. We also study ...

Abstract Knowledge about genetic diversity is essential to promote effective use and conservation of crops, because it enables farmers to adapt their crops to specific needs and is the raw material for breeding. Manioc ( Manihot esculenta ssp. esculenta ) is one of the world’s major food crops and has the potential to help achieve food security in the context of on-going climate changes. We evaluated single nucleotide polymorphisms in traditional Brazilian manioc varieties conserved in the gene bank ...

Leishmania amazonensis lacks a de novo mechanism for cholesterol synthesis and therefore must scavenge this lipid from the host environment. In this study we show that the L. amazonensis takes up and metabolizes human LDL1 particles in both a time and dose-dependent manner. This mechanism implies the presence of a true LDL receptor because the uptake is blocked by both low temperature and by the excess of non-labelled LDL. This receptor is probably associated with specific microdomains in the membrane ...

An important application of genomic selection in plant breeding is predicting untested single crosses (SCs). Most investigations on the prediction efficiency were based on tested SCs using cross-validation. The main objective was to assess the prediction efficiency by correlating the predicted and true genotypic values of untested SCs (accuracy) and measuring the efficacy of identification of the best 300 untested SCs (coincidence) using simulated data. We assumed 10,000 SNPs, 400 QTLs, two groups ...

It is relatively well established from many pedogenetic studies that, in deeply weathered Oxisols from Central Brazil, magnetite or maghemite are either inherited or transformed from magnetite of the mafic parent material. However, no similar pedogenetic pathways have been reported in the literature for other lithologies, such as limestone and pelitic rocks (shales and slates) of the Bambuí Group in Brazil. In these sedimentary, non-mafic lithologies, magnetic minerals are not likely to occur. Despite ...

Aims: Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are commonly driven by oncogenic mutations in KIT and PDGFRA . However, 10–40% of these patients are wild‐type for these genes. The aim of this study was to elucidate the molecular lesions underlying wild‐type GISTs tumorigenesis. Methods and results: Twenty‐nine KIT and PDGFRA wild‐type GISTs were re‐assessed for the presence of ‘cryptic’ KIT exon 11 duplications. ...

DNA methylation is characterized by the addition of methyl groups in cytosines within CpG islands. Unmethylated CpGs are related to transcriptionally active structure, whereas methylated CpG recruits methyl-binding proteins that promote chromatin compaction. The decision-making process in public security is not an easy task. Several aspects must be considered, since resources are limited, whereas coverage should be extensive. Usually, preventative actions are allocated to areas that are more prone to violence, where criminal occurrences have happened in the recent past. Ventricular over-drainage is a common complication of dysfunctional ventriculoperitoneal devices. Subdural haematomas are usually the most common lesions associated with that complication. Such lesions may arise after ventricular collapse and bridging veins disruption that follows over-drainage, thus contributing to distortion of brain parenchyma, increased intracranial hypertension and neurological decline. More rarely, extradural haematomas may also be observed after ventricular shunt hyperfunction ...
