Deep learning and, in particular, convolutional neural networks (CNN) achieve very good results on several computer vision applications like security and surveillance, where image and video analysis are required. These networks are quite demanding in terms of computation and memory and therefore are usually implemented in high-performance computing platforms or devices. Running CNNs in embedded platforms or devices with low computational and memory resources requires a careful optimization of system ...

Deep learning is now present in a wide range of services and applications, replacing and complementing other machine learning algorithms. Performing training and inference of deep neural networks using the cloud computing model is not viable for applications where low latency is required. Furthermore, the rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things will generate a large volume of data to be processed, which will soon overload the capacity of cloud servers. One solution is to process the data at ...

Edge devices are becoming smarter with the integration of machine learning methods, such as deep learning, and are therefore used in many application domains where decisions have to be made without human intervention. Deep learning and, in particular, convolutional neural networks (CNN) are more efficient than previous algorithms for several computer vision applications such as security and surveillance, where image and video analysis are required. This better efficiency comes with a cost of high ...

Convolutional neural networks have become the state of the art of machine learning for a vast set of applications, especially for image classification and object detection. There are several advantages to running inference on these models at the edge, including real-time performance and data privacy. The high computing and memory requirements of convolutional neural networks have been major obstacles to the broader deployment of CNNs on edge devices. Data quantization is an optimization method that ...

Recent fieldwork carried out in EN1-Noolchalai between 2009 and 2011, one of the most significant Acheulean sites located on the Sambu Escarpment of Peninj (Tanzania) and dated to 1.5–1.4 Ma, has allowed us to undertake more complete geomorphologic and sedimentological research at this site. This contextual research has allowed us to clarify the geoarchaeological interpretation of this taphonomically complex site in order to assess its relevance within the Early Acheulean in East Africa. New stratigraphic ...

Trypanosoma cruzi, an intracellular protozoan parasite infecting a wide variety of vertebrates, is the agent responsible for Chagas’ disease. This pathology often results in severe inflammatory heart condition and it is one of the major causes of dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure in Latin America. Nevertheless, little is known about the changes in isolate cardiac myocytes contractility during the development of this pathology. Here we report a relationship between cytokines profile ...

Background Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease. More than 99 percent of all cases occur in Africa. Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) is the only island endemic for onchocerciasis in the world. Since 2005, when vector Simulium yahense was eliminated, there have not been any reported cases of infection. This study aimed to demonstrate that updated WHO criteria for stopping mass drug administration (MDA) have been met. Methodology/Principal findings A cross-sectional ...

New archaeological excavations and research at BK, Upper Bed II (Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania) have yielded a rich and unbiased collection of fossil bones. These new excavations show that BK is a stratified deposit formed in a riverine setting close to an alluvial plain. The present taphonomic study reveals the second-largest collection of hominin-modified bones from Olduvai, with abundant cut marks found on most of the anatomical areas preserved. Meat and marrow exploitation is reconstructed using the ...

Abstract FLK North is one of the densest concentrations of fossils found in Olduvai Gorge. A recent taphonomic re-evaluation of the collection excavated by Leakey at the site suggests that it was a palimpsest in which most of the animals were accumulated and modified by carnivores. The lithic tools therefore seem to have an independent depositional history from most of the fauna. The present study, based on new excavations, expands the evidence supporting this interpretation and demonstrates a thicker ...

ABSTRACT The pressing need for better drugs against Chagas disease, African sleeping sickness, and schistosomiasis motivates the search for inhibitors of cruzain, rhodesain, and Schistosoma mansoni CB1 (SmCB1), the major cysteine proteases from Trypanosoma cruzi , Trypanosoma brucei , and S. mansoni , respectively. Thiosemicarbazones and heterocyclic analogues have been shown to be both antitrypanocidal and inhibitory against parasite cysteine proteases. A series of compounds was synthesized and evaluated ...

However, little is known about the community management of malaria and treatment-seeking patterns. We aimed to assess symptoms of children with reported malaria and treatment-seeking behaviour of their caretakers in rural and urban areas in the Bata District. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted in the district of Bata and 440 houses were selected from 18 rural ...

The emergence of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum has been a major contributor to the global burden of malaria. Drug resistance complicates treatment, and it is one of the most important problems in malaria control. This study assessed the level of mutations in P. falciparum genes, pfdhfr, pfdhps, pfmdr1, and pfcrt, related to resistance to different anti-malarial drugs, in the Continental Region of Equatorial Guinea, after 8 years of implementing artesunate combination therapies as the ...

Object detection and classification is an essential task of computer vision. A very efficient algorithm for detection and classification is YOLO (You Look Only Once). We consider hardware architectures to run YOLO in real-time on embedded platforms. Designing a new dedicated accelerator for each new version of YOLO is not feasible given the fast delivery of new versions. This work's primary goal is to design a configurable and scalable core for creating specific object detection and classification ...
