Abstract The effect of terpinen-4-ol was studied on rabbit duodenum in-vitro. Terpinen-4-ol induced relaxation of the basal tonus (IC50 170.2 (95% confidence interval, 175–204) μm) with a maximal relaxant response of 180.4 ± 3.9% (n = 6) of the contraction induced by 60 mm [K+]. The maximal relaxation induced in control conditions was not affected (P>0.05) by pretreatment of the tissues with phentolamine (50 μm) or propranolol (10 μm), Ng nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 1 mm), 1H-(1,2,4)-oxadiazolo[ ...

The aims of this study were to test the essential oil from Lippia sidoides Cham. for antifungal activity, in vitro, against Candida spp. and Microsporum canis, to evaluate its acute and subchronic toxicological effects, in vivo, and to determine its chemical constituents. The antifungal activity, in vitro, was initially evaluated by the agar-well diffusion technique, and the MIC and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were determined by the broth microdilution method. The acute and subchronic ...

The effects of the essential oil of Croton zehntneri (EOCz) and its major components anethole, estragole and methyl eugenol were evaluated in phenylephrine precontracted rat corpora cavernosa (RCC). RCC strips were mounted in 5 ml organ baths for isometric recordings of tension, precontracted with 10 μM phenylephrine and exposed to test drugs. All major compounds relaxed RCC. The order of potency was estragole > anethole > methyl eugenol. The maximal relaxation to EOCz and methyl eugenol was 62.67% (IC50 ...

Aim: d-chiro-inositol (DCI) has been shown to prevent and reverse endothelial dysfunction in diabetic rats and rabbits. The present study evaluates the preventive effect of DCI on experimental diabetic neuropathy (DN). Methods: Streptozotocin-induced (STZ) diabetic mice were treated by oral gavage for 60 days with DCI (20 mg/kg/12 h) or saline (NaCl 0.9%; 0.1 ml/10 g/12 h; Diab) and compared with euglycaemic groups treated with saline (0.1 ml/10 g/12 h; Eugly). Tyrosinase is a multifunctional, glycosylated and copper-containing oxidase enzyme that can be found in animals, plants, and fungi. It is involved in several biological processes such as melanin biosynthesis. In this work, a series of isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones was evaluated as tyrosinase inhibitors. It was found that compounds phthalaldehydic acid (1), 3-(2,6-dihydroxy-4-isopropylphenyl)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one (7), and 2-(3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl)-1,3-phenylene diacetate (9) were the most ...

Over the last decade we have seen an increased interest in the use of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in diseases that involve increased oxidative stress. It is well established that hyperglycemia in diabetes elicits a rise in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production but the effect of LLLT remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether LLLT was able to improve oxidative/nitrosative stress parameters in the wound healing process in diabetic mice. Twenty male mice were divided into four groups: ...

We investigated the biochemical and biological effects of a new C-type galactoside specific lectin termed BPL that was isolated from the snake venom of Bothrops pirajai. This lectin was purified using size exclusion HPLC followed by an immobilized lactose affinity column. The purified BPL was homogeneous by reverse phase HPLC and SDS-PAGE. We evaluated the nephrotoxicity of the whole venom of B. pirajai and its lectin. The whole venom of B. pirajai (10 microg/mL) showed similar results as those observed ...

The role of orange based pectin in the nucleation and growth of silver and gold nanoparticles is addressed. Pectin is a complex polysaccharide found in fruits such as oranges, lemons, passion fruits or apples.
