The nocturnal movements of breeding Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) between Fu- ente de Piedra Lake (Fuente de Piedra, southern Spain) and foraging areas was studied from 1986 to 1988. Fuente de Piedra is the only seasonal lake in Europe where Greater Flamingos breed regularly. Analysis of color-banded birds and fluctuation in flamingo numbers established that the marshes of the River Guadalquivir and its surround- ing wetlands, situated within a 200-km radius from Fuente de Piedra, ...

Maya blue paint was often used in Mesoamerica. The origin of its color and its resistance to acids and biocorrosion have not been fully understood. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and x-ray microanalysis studies of authentic samples show that palygorskite crystals in the paint form a superlattice that probably occurs as a result of mixing with indigo molecules. An amorphous silicate substrate contains inclusions of metal nanoparticles encapsulated ...

Greater flamingos in southern Spain foraged in areas distant from a breeding site, spending 4–6 days in foraging areas between successive visits to the colony to feed their chicks. During four years, we took blood samples from chicks to ascertain whether there were interannual variations in several blood parameters, indicative of food quality and feeding frequencies. When the chicks were captured, 20–31% of them had their crops empty, indicating that not all chicks were fed daily. Additional evidence ...

Abstract Horizontal cells are classically thought to mediate lateral inhibition by γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)‐transporter mediated release. In the mammalian retina, however, GABA uptake and cloned GABA transporter were not detected in horizontal cells. Furthermore, the vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter (VIAAT or VGAT) that loads GABA and glycine into synaptic vesicles was reported recently to be expressed in horizontal cells. To further assess synaptic transmission in mammalian horizontal ...

Aim: The Child Pugh and MELD are good methods for predicting mortality in patients with chronic liver disease. We investigated their performance as risk factors for failure to control bleeding, in-hospital overall mortality and death related to esophageal variceal bleeding episodes. Methods: From a previous collected database, 212 cirrhotic patients with variceal bleeding admitted to our hospital were studied. The predictive capability of Child Pugh and MELD scores were compared using c statistics. ...

We have performed molecular dynamics simulations at constant temperature and pressure to calculate the solubility of carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in water. The solubility of gases in water is important in several technological problems, in particular in the petroleum industry. The calculated liquid densities as function of temperature are in good agreement with experimental data. The results at the liquid-vapor equilibrium show that at low temperatures there is an important amount ...

Lateral interactions at the first retinal synapse have been initially proposed to involve GABA by transporter-mediated release from horizontal cells, onto GABA(A) receptors expressed on cone photoreceptor terminals and/or bipolar cell dendrites. However, in the mammalian retina, horizontal cells do not seem to contain GABA systematically or to express membrane GABA transporters. We here report that mouse retinal horizontal cells express GAD65 and/or GAD67 mRNA, and were weakly but consistently immunostained ...

This article investigates drug dosage individualization when the patient population can be described with a random-effects linear model of a continuous pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic response. Specifically, we show through both decision-theoretic arguments and simulations that a published clinical algorithm may produce better individualized dosages than some traditional methods of therapeutic drug monitoring. Since empirical evidence suggests that the linear model may adequately describe drugs ...

ABSTRACT We analyzed a global collection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains using 212 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. SNP nucleotide diversity was high (average across all SNPs, 0.19), and 96% of the SNP locus pairs were in complete linkage disequilibrium. Cluster analyses identified six deeply branching, phylogenetically distinct SNP cluster groups (SCGs) and five subgroups. The SCGs were strongly associated with the geographical origin of the M. tuberculosis samples and the birthplace ...

Abstract X-radiographic techniques were used to measure the skeletal density and percentage of bioerosion in Montastraea annularis and Porites astreoides growing in reefs subjected to suboptimal (Veracruz Reef System, VRS) and optimal (Mahahual, MH) environmental conditions for coral reef development. Skeletal density was higher in P. astreoides than in M. annularis and was higher in corals from MH than from the VRS. The percentage of the skeleton excavated by boring sponges was significantly correlated ...

Several evidences supported the existence of melatonin effects on reproductive system in fish. In order to investigate whether melatonin is involved in the modulation of GnRH systems in the European sea bass, we have injected melatonin (0.5 µg/g body mass) in male specimens. Dp71 is a member of the dystrophin family and the most abundant dmd gene product in the brain. In the present study, we focused on a short dystrophin transcript named Dp71f, which is alternatively spliced when exon 78 is absent The topographic localization of this protein in the encephalon has not been properly described yet, nor its cellular or subcellular localization, and even less its functions. Dp71f was found to be a cytoplasmic 70 kDa protein and localized in all encephalon regions studied. ...

Electrophilic, cationic Rh(III) complexes of composition [(η(5)-C5Me5)Rh(Ap)](+), (1(+)), were prepared by reaction of [(η(5)-C5Me5)RhCl2]2 and LiAp (Ap = aminopyridinate ligand) followed by chloride abstraction with NaBArF (BArF = B[3,5-(CF3)2C6H3]4). Reactions of cations 1(+) with different Lewis bases (e.g., NH3, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, or CNXyl) led in general to monoadducts 1·L(+) (L = Lewis base; Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3), but carbon monoxide provided carbonyl-carbamoyl complexes 1·(CO)2(+) as a result of metal ...

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world. Despite the impact of this pathology in the population, nowadays there is no specific treatment for this disease, focusing its treatment on risks factors. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are increasing worldwide. This is mainly due to an unhealthy nutrition, implying that variation in CVD risk may be due to variation in the capacity to manage a nutritional load. Our main purpose was to introduce the GEMM Family Study (Genetics of Metabolic Diseases in Mexico) as a multi-center study carrying out an ongoing recruitment of healthy urban adults. A layered double hydroxide with a chemical composition [Al2Li(OH)6]+X− · nH2O, where X− is an interlayer anion, has been synthesized hydrothermally at 130°C from aluminum-tri-(sec-butoxide) and lithium carbonate. Electron micrographs showed the product to have a platy morphology with distinct hexagonal symmetry, which has been corroborated by selected area electron diffraction patterns corresponding to a projection of the structure on its (001) plane. Infrared spectra of corundum-type oxide microcrystals with different shapes have been studied. Surface mode absorptions were interpreted through the use of a phonon theory based on the scattering of electromagnetic radiation by small particles. This theory suffices to interpret virtually all the details of the spectra in the materials studied. The lack of consistency among the reported i.r. spectra of powdered corundum-type oxides is shown to be due in part to the different particle shape of the ...

Abstract Hematites obtained by heating goethite gave different IR absorption spectra depending on the temperature of formation. Hematites formed between 250–600°C consisted of lath-like crystals (average size 0.4 ×0.08 µm) and showed, in accordance with theoretical predictions, very similar IR spectra whose absorption bands could all be assigned to surface mode vibrations. However, significantly different IR spectra were given by hematites formed between 700–950°C, the differences being correlated ...
