ABSTRACT Bacterial communities are important not only in the cycling of organic compounds but also in maintaining ecosystems. Specific bacterial groups can be affected as a result of changes in environmental conditions caused by human activities, such as agricultural practices. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of different forms of tillage and residue management on soil bacterial communities by using phylogenetic and multivariate analyses. Treatments involving zero tillage (ZT) and ...

This paper investigates the influence of social, cultural and economic background on students' performance in content-subjects in the framework of CLIL programmes in Spain. So far, CLIL investigation has focused primarily on language attainment in the L2 and the L1, but students' socio-economic status (SES) has been largely ignored, and its influence on performance in content-subjects remains unexplored. Competence in Science in the L1 (Spanish) is analysed by comparing pupils enrolled in mainstream ...

A deletion of at least 11.5 cM in the paternal X chromosome mapping between microsatellites DXS989 and DXS1003 and encompassing the genes for ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC), retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (RPGR) and dystrophin, was associated with the loss of band Xp21 in a female patient with OTC deficiency. Another four female patients were heterozygous for point mutations in the OTC gene: the nonsense mutation Q69X or the missense mutations I172F, G188V and G197R. In the OTC amino acid ...

The surface tensions of aqueous solutions of formic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid were measured over the entire concentration range at temperatures (20 to 50) °C. The experimental values were correlated with temperature and mole fraction. Maximum deviations were in both cases always less than 1%.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that phenylketonuric patients display a deficiency in long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. A study has now been performed on 13 cases (5 with methylmalonic acidaemia and 8 with urea cycle disorders) whose dietary treatment also implies a limitation in protein‐rich food. Plasma and red‐cell phospholipid fatty acid profiles were studied. The most relevant results were a lower percentage of docosahexaenoic acid in plasma and red‐cell phospholipids (0.91% ± 0.53% ...

Abstract Aims e‐consults are asynchronous, clinician‐to‐clinician exchanges that answer focused, non‐urgent, patient‐specific questions using the electronic medical record. We instituted an e‐consultation programme (2013–2019) for all general practitioners (GPs) referrals to cardiologists that preceded patients' in‐person consultations when considered. In our study, we aimed to analyse the clinical characteristics, 1 year prognosis and the prognostic determinants of patients with a previous diagnosis ...

The Th17 immune response plays a key role in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Expression of Th17-related genes in inflamed tissues has been reported in autoimmune diseases. However, values are frequently obtained using invasive methods. We aimed to identify biomarkers of MS in an accessible sample, such as blood, by quantifying the relative expression of 91 Th17-related genes in CD4+ T lymphocytes from patients with MS during a relapse or during ...

The European Space Agency has proposed a Moon Village as the next step in the human exploration of the Solar System. Considering the cost of sending mass to the lunar surface, the utilization of in-situ resources for building the lunar base is a suitable option to make this mission affordable. Additive manufacturing can play an important role in this context. This paper reviews the state of the art and provides a detailed trade-off of available additive manufacturing technologies that can be used ...

Gene transfer to mesenchymal stem cells constitutes a powerful approach to promote their differentiation into the appropriate cartilage phenotype. Although viral vectors represent gold standard vehicles, because of their high efficiency, their use is precluded by important concerns including an elevated immunogenicity and the possibility of insertional mutagenesis. Therefore, the development of new and efficient non-viral vectors is under active investigation. In the present study, we developed ...

Connexins (Cxs) are integral membrane proteins that form high-conductance plasma membrane channels, allowing communication from cell to cell (via gap junctions) and from cells to the extracellular environment (via hemichannels). Initially described for their role in joining excitable cells (nerve and muscle), gap junctions (GJs) are found between virtually all cells in solid tissues and are essential for functional coordination by enabling the direct transfer of small signalling molecules, metabolites, ...

An impaired nocturnal decrease in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) increases the blood pressure (BP) load, which is a main factor in endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and arterial stiffness. We aimed to quantify some markers of oxidative stress in hypertensive patients, to compare their levels between individuals with dipper and non-dipper DBP profiles, and to assess their correlation with the nocturnal DBP (nDBP) dipping. It was an observational study that included patients older than 18 years ...

The use of minimal cassettes (linear DNA comprising promoter+open reading frame+terminator) for genetic transformation offers a means of transforming plant cells by biolistics without introducing unwanted sequences. However, a species-specific approach of the factors involved in successful transformation with this technology is advisable. Protection of the minimal cassette upstream promoter and downstream terminator may be necessary due to the nuclease activity of target plant material. Genetic transformation ...

Using various sources of information, we reviewed the literature about the economic valuation of ecosystem services in Mexico. The objectives were to analyze the diversity and consistency of value estimations, identify research gaps, and suggest directions for future research. We found 43 studies that used non-market valuation methods to estimate the economic benefits of 24 types of ecosystem services. The most evaluated service was recreation, followed by water and food resources. Contingent valuation ...

Vascular lesions constitute a widely heterogeneous group of tumors and malformations. For head and neck vascular anomalies, most studies have not attempted to make the differential diagnosis between true hemangiomas and vascular malformations, because an accurate diagnosis remains a challenge for physicians. The successful treatment of vascular anomalies depends on a profound knowledge of their biologic behavior and correct classification. Recently, specific immunohistochemical markers such as erythrocyte- ...
