Some recent geological and geophysical reconnaissance studies carried out in the Alhandra Sub-basin (southern segment of the Paraíba Basin) have revealed very interesting structural and stratigraphic behaviors that have not yet been described. Four different structural compartments with NNE-SSW trends were identified, each characterized by a particular stratigraphic pile, as a result of vertical tectonic displacements, probably post-Pliocene in age: the Alto Rio Mumbaba High (with widespread basement ...

Abstract The Drosophila melanogaster somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) was used to assess the genotoxicity of surface (S) and bottom (B) water and sediment samples collected from Sites 1 and 2 on the Japaratuba River (Sergipe, Brazil), an area impacted by a petrochemical industrial complex that indirectly discharges treated effluent (produced water) into the river. The genotoxicity tests were performed in standard (ST) cross and high bioactivation (HB) cross flies and were conducted on samples ...

The Poxim river hydrographic sub-basin comprises four freshwater rivers, Poxim-Açu, Poxim-Mirim, Poxim and Pitanga, and is located in the East of Sergipe State, Northeast of Brazil. The present work investigates the distribution, the factors controlling concentrations, and toxicity risks of the metals Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al and Fe, in surface sediments of the four rivers. Toxicity was evaluated using the Consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines for freshwater ecosystems. Spearman ...

Agricultural development and its associated impacts on the environment are resulting in increasingly restrictive guidelines and legislation concerning the use of chemicals in agro-ecosystems. The herbicide glyphosate is widely used for weed control in both cultivated and uncultivated areas and is considered to show low toxicity to mammals. It is highly water-soluble, and its monitoring in surface, underground, and potable waters is recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. ...

Micro- and mesozooplankton were studied in the Sergipe estuary, northeastern Brazil, in order to assess the temporal variability in abundance and biodiversity under stressed conditions (urban pollution). Zooplankton samples and abiotic data were collected at one station during a full tidal cycle in July 2001 and in February 2002, corresponding to the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The salinity regime was euhaline-polyhaline. Phosphate and dissolved oxygen were higher in July 2001, and nitrite, ...

Rifampicin is an antibiotic which, on a carbon paste electrode, shows an oxidation response of 0.492 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) at pH 7.0, due to the electroactivity of the hydroquinone group. Interaction of rifampicin with chitosan is strongly dependent on pH, species concentrations and contact time between the latter. Compared to the carbon paste electrode, electrodes modified with chitosan showed greater sensitivity, with optimum voltammetric profile obtained at pH 8.0. Spectrophotometric measurements indicate ...

AVS and SEM concentrations were, in general, higher in the core sediments from areas which receive a higher anthropic contribution due to urban pollution. In these cores, the sulfide seemed to be the main connection for the metals. In the core obtained from the area of major marine influence, the most important binding phases for the metals seemed to ...

Several work-hardening constitutive models are used in order to allow the different materials' mechanical behavior to be better described: the Swift law (a power law) or a Voce type saturation law to describe the classical isotropic work-hardening; a Lemaître and Chaboche type law to model the non-linear kinematic ...

The distributions of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Fe and Al were investigated in surface sediments collected at 19 sites in the Sergipe River Hydrographic Basin of Northeast Brazil. A regional geochemical baseline (RGB) was defined using iron as a reference element. Enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) were used to determine the extent of anthropogenic metal pollution. EF values showed that sediments from sites 1, 5 and 13 could be considered contaminated by Pb, Cr and Cu, respectively. ...

Abstract In situ investigations of the effects of mutagenic pollutants (environmental monitoring) have increasingly used bioindicators, and fish often have been used in these studies as sentinel organisms. In the present study, we have used the piscine micronucleus test (MNT) as an in situ biological indicator of chemical contamination in two fresh water fish species ( Astyanax bimaculatus and Hoplias malabaricus ). The fish were collected from two sites (Sites 1 and 2) in the Japaratuba River (Sergipe, ...
