Six different methods for assessing amniotic fluid bilirubin were compared in 111 samples from 37 patients. When the Liley methods were compared, the chloroform extraction and 5% correction methods resulted in 20% and 4% reductions, respectively, in the mean change in optical density at 450 nm when compared with the uncorrected mean (0.086 ± 0.06 [p \lt 0.05] and 0.104 ± 0.07 [p, not significant] vs 0.108 ± 0.08). This reduction was observed in spite of significant visual blood contamination being rarely ...

OBJECTIVES. Male adolescents frequently become disconnected from health care, especially as they get older, which limits physicians' abilities to address their health needs and results in missed opportunities to connect them to the health care system as they enter adulthood. In this study we tested the ability of modifiable (beliefs about masculinity, parental communication, sex education, and health insurance) and nonmodifiable (age, race/ethnicity, and region of residence) factors to prospectively ...

Data were drawn from 845 males in the National Survey of Adolescent Males who were initially aged 15-17, and followed-up 2.5 and 4.5 years later, to their early twenties. Mixed-effects regression models (MRM) and semiparametric trajectory analyses (STA) modeled patterns of change in masculinity attitudes at the individual and group levels, guided by gender intensification theory and cognitive-developmental theory. Overall, men’s masculinity attitudes became significantly less traditional between middle ...

Abstract Factor H–related protein (FHR) 1 is one of the five human FHRs that share sequence and structural homology with the alternative pathway complement inhibitor FH. Genetic studies on disease associations and functional analyses indicate that FHR-1 enhances complement activation by competitive inhibition of FH binding to some surfaces and immune proteins. We have recently shown that FHR-1 binds to pentraxin 3. In this study, our aim was to investigate whether FHR-1 binds to another pentraxin, ...

To evaluate the reliability of transvaginally collected amniotic fluid in the assessment of fetal pulmonary maturity.A retrospective chart review was conducted on mother-infant pairs in which delivery occurred before 3 7 weeks gestation and a lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio and phosphatidylglycerol had been determined within 1 week of the delivery.Of 299 pairs, 154 had amniotic fluid collected transvaginally and 145 transabdominally. A lecithin/ sphingomyelin ratio of ≥2.0 predicted the absence of hyaline ...

Materials for studying biological interactions and for alternative energy applications are continuously under development. Semiconductor quantum dots are a major part of this landscape due to their tunable optoelectronic properties. Size-dependent quantum confinement effects have been utilized to create materials with tunable bandgaps and Auger recombination rates. Other mechanisms of electronic structural control are under investigation as not all of a material's characteristics are affected by ...

Privacy and security of health information is a basic expectation of patients. Despite the existence of federal and state laws safeguarding the privacy of health information, health information systems currently lack the capability to allow for protection of this information for minors. This policy statement reviews the challenges to privacy for adolescents posed by commercial health information technology systems and recommends basic principles for ideal electronic health record systems. This policy ...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Healthy People 2020 call for improvements in meeting men's reproductive health needs but little is known about the proportion of men in need. This study describes men aged 35 to 39 in need of family planning and preconception care, demographic correlates of these needs, and contraception use among men in need of family planning. Using data from Wave 4 (2008-2010) of the National Survey of Adolescent Males, men were classified in need of family planning ...

Mutations in succinate dehydrogenase complex genes predispose to familial paraganglioma-pheochromocytoma syndrome (FPG) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Here we describe cancer patients undergoing agnostic germline testing at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and found to harbor germline SDHA mutations. Using targeted sequencing covering the cancer census genes, we identified 10 patients with SDHA germline mutations. Cancer diagnoses for these patients carrying SDHA germline mutations ...

A microscopy platform that leverages the arrival time of individual photons to enable 3D single-particle tracking of fast-moving (translational diffusion coefficient of ≃3.3 µm2/s) particles in high-background environments is reported here. It combines a hardware-based time-gating module, which enables the rate of photon processing to be as high as 100 MHz, with a two-photon-excited 3D single-particle tracking confocal microscope to enable high sample penetration depth. Proof-of-principle experiments ...

Context Understanding the relationship between union status and men's sexual risk behavior in their 30s is important to ensure appropriate reproductive health services for men in middle adulthood . Methods Data from 1,083 men aged 34–41 who participated in the 2008–2010 wave of the National Survey of Adolescent Males were used to examine differentials in sexual risk behaviors by union status, past risk behavior and selected characteristics. Bivariate tabulations were done to assess relationships between ...

Abstract Motivation Recent advancements in parallel sequencing methods have precipitated a surge in publicly available short-read sequence data. This has encouraged the development of novel computational tools for the de novo assembly of transcriptomes from RNA-seq data. Despite the availability of these tools, performing an end-to-end transcriptome assembly remains a programmatically involved task necessitating familiarity with best practices. Aside from quality control steps, including error correction, ...

Clear evidence demonstrates that adolescent males who endorse more traditional masculinity ideology (MI) beliefs engage in riskier behaviors and experience negative health outcomes. Research on the sources of MI focuses primarily on non-changeable demographics and lacks guidance from a conceptual framework. Guided by theory and existing empirical work, the goal of this study was to test a conceptual framework of adolescent male’s MI that examines whether potentially modifiable socialization factors ...

Introduction Galanin, a small peptide originally associated with neuronal cell function, is highly expressed by some HNSCC cell lines. This peptide can engage three different receptors (GalR1, 2 and 3), which have varying levels of expression in HNSCC cells. High galanin expression and increased galanin receptor 2 (GalR2) signaling were shown to result in increased proliferation, cytokine expression, invasion of HNSCC cells in vitro and also to promote tumor growth in vivo. Less is known about the ...
