Development of sexual stage parasites within the mosquito vector is a crucial step in the transmission of Plasmodium parasites. The expression of the P25 and P28 proteins on the surface of Plasmodium parasites in the mosquito midgut is required for development and hence disease transmission. 3' gene-flanking sequences are essential for expression of these critical proteins but the nucleotide elements required are poorly defined. Global production of chickens has trebled in the past two decades and they are now the most important source of dietary animal protein worldwide. Chickens are subject to many infectious diseases that reduce their performance and productivity. Coccidiosis, caused by apicomplexan protozoa of the genus Eimeria , is one of the most important poultry diseases. Understanding the biology of Eimeria parasites underpins development of new drugs and vaccines needed to improve global food security. We have produced ...

The influence of Ca and dairy on these phenotypes in the context of preexisting obesity is not known. Furthermore, interpretations have been confounded historically by differences in body weight gain among DIO animals fed dairy-based protein or high Ca.Adiposity along with associated metabolic and inflammatory outcomes were measured ...

High dietary calcium (Ca) is reported to have anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory properties. Evidence for these properties of dietary Ca in animal models of polygenic obesity have been confounded by the inclusion of dairy food components in experimental diets; thus, effect of Ca per se could not be deciphered. Furthermore, potential anti-inflammatory actions of Ca in vivo could not be dissociated from reduced adiposity. We characterized adiposity along with metabolic and inflammatory phenotypes in ...

Genistein, rich in soybean, has been reported to have anti-cancer activity on several cancers. However, the molecular mechanism of its anti-cancer activity still remains unclear. We investigated the effect of genistein on a human oral squamous carcinoma line (SCC-25), and demonstrated that genistein inhibited SCC-25 cell growth via G2/M phase arrest. We observed a significant decrease of proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in these cells after treatment, but no significant change in the ...

The effect of antigen dose on the kinetics of circulating antibody synthesis and on antibody affinity was studied in a haptenic system. High doses of antigen resulted, early in immunization, in higher concentrations of antibody followed later in the immune response by decreased serum levels of antibody as compared with lower doses of antigen. The affinity of the initial antibody synthesized was very similar over a wide antigen dose range. Subsequently, however, a rapid rise in affinity was seen ...

Prolonged sitting time is detrimental for health. Individuals with desk-based occupations tend to sit a great deal and sit-stand workstations have been identified as a potential strategy to reduce sitting time. Hence, the objective of the current study was to examine the effects of using sit-stand workstations on office workers' sitting time at work and over the whole day. We conducted a randomized controlled trial pilot with crossover design and waiting list control in Sydney, Australia from September ...

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) prognostic models are potential solutions to severe human and technical shortages. Although numerous TBI prognostic models have been developed, none are widely used in clinical practice, largely because of a lack of feasibility research to inform implementation. We previously developed a prognostic model and Web-based application for in-hospital TBI care in low-resource settings. In this study, we tested the feasibility, acceptability, and usability of the application ...

Prolonged sitting time has been identified as a health risk factor. Sit-stand workstations allow desk workers to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the working day, but not much is known about their acceptability and feasibility. Hence, the aim of this study was to qualitatively evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and perceptions of using sit-stand workstations in a group of desk-based office workers. This article describes the qualitative evaluation of the randomized controlled ...
