Tau and α-synuclein are both proteins implicated in the pathology of neurodegenerative disease. Here we have investigated the mechanisms of axonal transport of tau and α-synuclein, because failure of axonal transport has been implicated in the development of several neurodegenerative disorders. We found that the transport of both of these proteins depend on an intact microtubule- but not actin-cytoskeleton, and that tau and α-synuclein both move at overall slow rates of transport. We used time-lapse ...

α-Synuclein is a major protein constituent of Lewy bodies and mutations in α-synuclein cause familial autosomal dominant Parkinson's disease. One explanation for the formation of perikaryal and neuritic aggregates of α-synuclein, which is a presynaptic protein, is that the mutations disrupt α-synuclein transport and lead to its proximal accumulation. We found that mutant forms of α-synuclein, either associated with Parkinson's disease (A30P or A53T) or mimicking defined serine, but not tyrosine, ...

Abstract The use of a reference electrode (RE) is necessary to independently measure the overpotential of each electrode in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). This type of set‐up, known as the 3‐electrode (or 3‐terminal) configuration, can give erroneous results if the RE does not effectively separate the potential of the two active electrodes. In this work, calculations and experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the 3‐electrode configuration used in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy ( ...

Deposition of carbon on conventional anode catalysts and formation of large temperature gradients along the cell are the main barriers for implementing internal reforming in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems. Mathematical modeling is an essential tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies to overcome these problems. In the present work, a three-dimensional model for a planar internal reforming SOFC is developed. A co-flow system with no pre-reforming, methane fuel utilization of 75%, ...

Hongpeng He, Josephine M. Hill,
Carbon formation on Ni/YSZ cermets in high-temperature processes involving hydrocarbons can be a severe problem. Understanding the mechanisms of carbon formation is necessary for developing strategies to avoid or minimize the problem. In this study, Ni/YSZ pellets (70/30 NiO/YSZ) have been exposed to humidified methane at temperatures between 773 K and 1073 K. The carbon formed on these pellets and/or any structural changes in the pellets was studied with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron ...

William Qu, Jian Li, Josephine M. Hill, Douglas G. Ivey,
Several spinel samples, i.e., MnxCr3−xO4 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 2.5), NiCr2O4 and CoCr2O4, were synthesized and studied in terms of phase analysis, density, electrical resistivity and thermal expansion behaviour. The spinel samples were generally single phase; exceptions included MnCr2O4 and Mn0.5Cr2.5O4 with significant amounts of Cr2O3 and NiCr2O4 with trace amounts of NiO. Porosity, in general, decreased with increasing sintering temperature, except for Mn0.5Cr2.5O4, which showed increasing porosity with increasing ...

Wei Qu, Jian Li, Douglas G. Ivey, Josephine M. Hill,
Ferritic stainless steels are being considered as potential interconnect materials for SOFCs, in part because of their low cost relative to alternatives. These materials are, however, susceptible to degradation over time. A primary source of degradation is an increase in the area specific resistance (ASR), which is due to the formation of poorly conducting oxides (Mn–Cr spinel and Cr2O3) on the surface. In this work, the influence of Y, Co and Y/Co oxide coatings on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic ...

Abstract Six Pt-supported catalysts based on mordenite, pillared clay, delaminated clay and Al-MCM41 were tested for hydrogenation and mild hydrocracking activities in processing a middle distillate derived from Canadian oil sands. Experiments were performed in a fixed-bed microreactor between 260 and 380 °C, at a total pressure of 10.3 MPa and a LHSV of 1.0 h−1. The results showed that, except for the untreated mordenite based catalyst, the other catalysts all had suitable pore structures to accommodate ...
