One of the most challenging points for ancient DNA studies on human remains is that analysing procedures involve partial or total destruction of the samples, which usually are unique and irreplaceable. This is what prevents museums, anthropologists or archaeologists from giving samples for genetic investigation. So that it is interesting to find an analysing method without destroying them.In this study, it was carried out the evaluation of a non-destructive extraction DNA protocol on 4 Neolithic ...

The protective role of trehalose against oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide in Candida albicans has been investigated in the homozygous mutant ntc1Δ/ntc1Δ, disrupted in the NTC1 gene, which encodes the neutral (cytosolic) trehalase (Ntc1p). After a severe oxidative exposure (50 mM H2O2), both parental (CAI-4) and ntc1Δ/ntc1Δ exponential-phase cells stored large amounts of intracellular trehalose. In turn, the degree of cell survival was roughly equivalent in both strains, although slightly ...

Cancer therapy-induced cardiomyopathy (CCM) manifests as left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and heart failure (HF). It is associated withparticular pharmacological agents and it is typically dose dependent, but significant individual variability has been observed. History of prior cardiac disease, abuse of toxics, cardiac overload conditions, age, and genetic predisposing factors modulate the degree of the cardiac reserve and the response to the injury. Genetic/familial cardiomyopathies (CMY) are increasingly ...

The aim of this study is to identify the influence of the ligand aminoacidato on the antiproliferative activity against human tumor cell lines HeLa, HCT-15 and SKL-U through the analysis of a set of Cu(II) coordination compounds with general formula [Cu(4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)(N-O)]NO3where N-O represents several essential aminoacids. Results show that the hydrophobicity of the amino acid ligands increases the cellular uptake of copper (II) in HeLa tumor cell line, however, the increase ...

The molecular mechanism of citrullination involves the calcium-dependent peptidylarginine deiminase (PAD) family of enzymes. These enzymes induce a stereochemical modification of normal proteins and transform them into autoantigens, which in rheumatoid arthritis trigger a complex cascade of joint inflammatory events followed by chronic synovitis, pannus formation, and finally, cartilage destruction. By hypothesizing that PAD2 and PAD4 enzymes produce autoantigens, we investigated five possible synovial ...

Abstract Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurological disorder usually caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene. Since the MECP2 gene is located on the X chromosome, X chromosome inactivation (XCI) could play a role in the wide range of phenotypic variation of RTT patients; however, classical methylation-based protocols to evaluate XCI could not determine whether the preferentially inactivated X chromosome carried the mutant or the wild-type allele. Therefore, we developed an allele-specific methylation- ...
