Maggots from the Lucilia sp. genus are used for debridement of infected and necrotic wounds. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity has been described in the excretion/secretions (ES1) of these larvae. This study identifies the genetic sequence of a cecropin-like antimicrobial peptide from Lucilia eximia. Total RNA was extracted and used for PCR-RACE amplification of a cecropin, the native peptide was immunolocalized in the tissues and secretions of the larvae, and a synthetic analog was used to explore ...

In paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), the primary lung infection remains silent. In this study, attempts were done to define the primary target organ by correlating lung radiographic abnormalities with the time course of mucosal/skin lesions concurrently exhibited at diagnosis by 63 patients in whom microscopy and/or isolation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from respiratory secretions had been positive. Mucosal and skin lesions were found in 65.1% and 12.7% of the patients, respectively. Odynophagia ...

In this work a statistical repeatability study of the main biomass gasification process parameters in a laboratory-scale fixed bed downdraft gasifier on batch operation was carried out using analysis of variance. To achieve this, a multi-factorial experimental design of biomass gasification was carried out keeping the main input operational parameters constant (air flow, moisture, and size and shape of biomass). Repeatability was evaluated by carrying out the tests by the same user in the same test ...

Altitude above sea level produces a reduction in air density affecting the combustion process, pollutant emissions, and engine performance. In this work the combustion diagnosis of an automotive turbocharged diesel enginewas carried out from in-cylinder pressure signal. Tests were performed at three altitudes above sea level, under steady state operating conditions, using conventional diesel fuel. As altitude above sea level increased, the fuel/air mixture became richer. The brake specific fuel ...

The energy of a graph G is defined as E(G)=∑i=1n|λi|, where λ1,λ2,…,λn are the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of G. This concept was extended by Nikiforov [8] to digraphs as N(D)=∑i=1nσi, where D is a digraph with n vertices and singular values σ1,…,σn. Upper bounds of N were found by Kharaghani and Tayfeh-Rezaie [4]. In this work we find lower bounds of N over the set of digraphs.

ABSTRACT Background: Informal caregivers of individuals with Parkinson’s disease face a range of responsibilities that increase as the disease progresses. As a result of these stressors, caregivers are vulnerable to decreased health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Guided by the stress process model of caregiving, the present study examined the relations between family cohesion, perceived burden, and mental and physical HRQOL among Parkinson’s disease caregivers in Mexico. It was hypothesized that ...

PVA hydrogels obtained by freeze-thaw technique find important applications in regenerative medicine and controlled drug delivery technologies. The novelty of this contribution is the establishment of the cross-dependency of kinetics and thermodynamics parameters of swelling and dissolution of PVA hydrogels with the freeze-thaw process main variables. The work also establishes cross-correlations between the freeze-thaw process conditions, the gel microstructure and the properties of obtained hydrogel/ ...

Tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons (HC), and it is one of the useful fractions obtained from the pyrolysis of waste tires (WT). As a result of its high energy density (HHV ∼ 43 MJ/kg), TPO use as a fuel in combustion systems is a promising approach for recycling WT. However, fundamental fuel characteristics and combustion properties of TPO are still unexplored, which stand as a bottleneck for potential applications. This work pursues a comprehensive understanding of the structural ...

Tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons spanning a wide boiling point range. Due to its complexity, direct implementation of TPO to combustion applications has been challenging. Distillation is a simple method for grouping similar compounds, based on their volatility, thereby facilitating further upgrading and use. In this work, TPO was distilled at atmospheric pressure into different fractions (light, low-middle, high-middle, and heavy), and the structural characteristics of ...

The current distribution of the flora and fauna of southern South America is the result of drastic geological events that occurred during the last 20 million years, including marine transgressions, glaciations and active vulcanism. All these have been associated with fragmentation, isolation and subsequent expansion of the biota, south of 35°S, such as the temperate rainforest. This forest is mostly dominated by Nothofagus trees and is the habitat of the relict marsupial monito del monte, genus ...

Timely and accurate diagnostics are essential to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, but no test satisfies both conditions. Dogs can scent-identify the unique odors of volatile organic compounds generated during infection by interrogating specimens or, ideally, the body of a patient. After training 6 dogs to detect SARS-CoV-2 by scent in human respiratory secretions (in vitro diagnosis), we retrained 5 of them to search and find the infection by scenting the patient directly (in vivo screening). Then, efficacy ...

Fique fibers obtained from the leaves of Furcraea spp., a highly abundant plant in the mountains of South America, may offer an alternative as biosorbents in desalination processes as they exhibit high removal capacities (13.26 meq/g for chloride ions and 15.52 meq/g for sodium ions) up to four times higher than exchange capacities commonly observed in synthetic resins. The ion removal capacity of the fibers was also found to be a function of the pH of the solution with the maximum removal of ions ...

The stress process model of caregiving posits that caregivers' internal psychosocial resources may serve as buffers between the stress associated with caregiving and well-being. Empirical support for the stress process model exists for several caregiving contexts, but little research has investigated the Parkinson's disease caregiving experience in Mexico. Using a cross-sectional, correlational design, the objective of this study was to examine whether resilience moderates the relation between perceived ...
