This paper presents an updated and broad review of swarm robotics research papers regarding software, hardware, simulators and applications. The evolution from its concept to its real-life implementation is presented. Swarm robotics analysis is focused on four aspects: conceptualization, simulators, real-life robotics for swarm use, and applications. For simulators and robots, a detailed comparison between existing resources is made. A summary of the most used swarm robotics applications and behaviors ...

The development and application of urban sustainability indicators has gained momentum in recent years, especially since the generation of specific urban indicators for the Agenda 2030. Urban sustainability is a broad concept involving many dimensions, therefore the generation of a short, but comprehensive list of indicators is a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a set of 29 indicators designed to characterise urban sustainability in Chile, which we also expect to be relevant to other ...

The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has not been studied in Argentina. To determine the prevalence and relevant clinical characteristics of COPD in a representative sample. We performed a cross-sectional study in a population of adults aged ≥40 years randomly selected by cluster sampling in 6 urban locations. Subjects answered a structured survey and performed pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry (PBD). COPD was defined as FEV1/FVC ratio 80 years), male gender (OR 1.62; ...

This paper presents a performance evaluation of the scalable video streaming over mobile ad hoc networks. In particular, we focus on the rate-adaptive method for streaming scalable video (H.264/SVC). For effective adaptation a new cross-layer routing protocol is introduced. This protocol provides an efficient algorithm for available bandwidth estimation. With this information, the video source adjusts its bit rate during the video transmission according to the network state. We also propose a free ...

Some 550 years ago (1320–1433 A.D.), a powerful Plinian eruption at El Chichón Volcano in southern Mexico produced a widespread pumice fall deposit. We subdivided the deposit into three parts on the basis of structural and textural characteristics, pumice lithology and density, granulometry, and petrologic‐geochemical attributes. The deposit covers an area of 1500 km 2 within the 1‐cm isopach and has a minimum estimated bulk volume of 2.8 km 3 (1.1 km 3 dense rock equivalent (DRE)); its eruptive column ...

This paper describes how File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport (FLUTE) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) can be used to provide mobile video streaming services over broadcast wireless networks. FLUTE is a multicast protocol for multimedia file download. In this proposal, the protocol is adapted to provide video streaming services in crowded environments. Thus, video is delivered over a single connection to all viewers, reducing the traffic in the network. ...

Objective: To test the hypothesis that erythrocyte deformability is influenced by changes in the content of membrane tubulin (Mem-tub). Methods and results: Human erythrocytes contain tubulin distributed in three pools (membrane, sedimentable, soluble). Erythrocytes from hypertensive humans have a higher proportion of Mem-tub. Increased Mem-tub content in hypertensive patients was correlated with decreased erythrocyte deformability. Treatment of erythrocytes from normotensive individuals with taxol ...

Declining oxygen is one of the most drastic changes in the ocean, and this trend is expected to worsen under future climate change scenarios. Spatial variability in dissolved oxygen dynamics and hypoxia exposures can drive differences in vulnerabilities of coastal ecosystems and resources, but documentation of variability at regional scales is rare in open-coast systems. Using a regional collaborative network of dissolved oxygen and temperature sensors maintained by scientists and fishing cooperatives ...

Toxoplasma gondii is the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis. Mother to child transmission of this parasite can occur during pregnancy. Newborns with congenital toxoplasmosis may develop central nervous system impairment, with severity ranging from subclinical manifestations to death. A pro-inflammatory/regulated specific immune profile is crucial in the defense against the parasite; nevertheless, its role in the infected pregnant women and the congenitally infected offspring has been poorly explored, ...

Image classification is one of the most important tasks in computer vision, since it can be used to retrieve, store, organize, and analyze digital images. In recent years, deep learning convolutional neural networks have been successfully used to classify images surpassing previous state of the art performances. Moreover, using transfer learning techniques, very complex models have been successfully utilized for other tasks different from the original task for which they were trained for. Here, ...

One of the major challenges for the transmission of time-sensitive data like video over mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) is the deployment of an end-to-end QoS support mechanism. Therefore, several approaches and enhancements have been proposed concerning the routing protocols. In this paper we propose a new QoS routing protocol based on AODV (named AQA-AODV), which creates routes according to application QoS requirements. We have introduced link and path available bandwidth estimation mechanisms and ...

When a video is encoded with constant quality, the resulting bitstream will have variable bitrate due to the inherent nature of the video encoding process. This paper proposes a video Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR) algorithm, called Look Ahead, which takes into account this bitrate variability in order to calculate, in real time, the appropriate quality level that minimizes the number of interruptions during the playback. The algorithm is based on the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) ...

A subpopulation of membrane tubulin consisting mainly of the acetylated isotype is associated with Na+,K+-ATPase and inhibits the enzyme activity. We found recently that treatment of cultured astrocytes with l-glutamate induces dissociation of the acetylated tubulin/Na+,K+-ATPase complex, resulting in increased enzyme activity. We now report occurrence of this phenomenon in non-neural cells. As in the case of astrocytes, the effect of l-glutamate is mediated by its transporters and not by specific ...
