Every day, society's concern over pollution caused by plastic waste grows greater. One of the most intensive sectors for the use of plastic is the food industry. Companies in this sector face the challenge of transitioning to a more sustainable and less intensive model of plastic use, respecting the principles established for a circular economy. Accordingly, one of the questions that industries tend to ask is whether sustainability will influence the consumer's purchase decision. To respond to this, ...

The gene ODC1, which codes for the ornithine decarboxylase enzyme, was isolated from the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae. The deduced amino acid sequence predicted a protein of 447 amino acids with a molecular weight of 49.3 kDa that contained the canonical motifs of ornithine decarboxylases. The ODC1 cDNA sequence was expressed in Escherichia coli cells; radiometric enzyme assays showed that the purified recombinant protein had ornithine decarboxylase activity. The optimum pH of ...

A procedure consisting of connecting in series two different HPLC columns, one for size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and the second one a normal-phase (silica) column has been developed. An automatic three-way switching valve was placed between the two columns. Through the valve, the polymer was drained whereas the rest of the compounds, a group of antioxidants and UV stabilizers, were separated and analyzed in the second column. The behaviour of the SEC column in different organic phases is studied. ...

Pisco is a common beverage, originating in some South American countries (such as Peru and Chile), which is obtained by distillation of wine made from different varieties of grapes. In this paper, thirty one commercial Peruvian pisco samples made with Negra Criolla, Mollar and Uvina grapes have been analyzed by gas chromatography–flame ionization (GC–FID) and mass spectrometry detection (GC–MS). A representative sample of each variety was also evaluated by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O). A sensory ...

ABSTRACT Forty‐five samples of commercial pisco made with Albilla, Muscat and Torontel grapes in different areas of Peru have been evaluated by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC‐O) and chemical quantitative analysis. The GC‐O study revealed that the Peruvian pisco made of these varieties of grapes has an aroma profile formed by nearly 30 odorants. The odorant 2,3‐pentanedione was detected only in the Albilla sample, producing significant differences. The chemical analysis of the volatiles of these ...

Thirty-three commercial pisco samples made with Italia grapes in five different regions in Perú have been evaluated by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and chemical quantitative analysis for the first time. The GC-O study has revealed that the Peruvian pisco made from this aromatic variety of grape (Italia) has an aroma profile composed of twenty-five odorants. Only one of them could not be identified (LRIDB-WAX 2313). Most of the odorants are fermentation-related, while guaiacol, β-damascenone, ...

Abstract Background & Aims: The association of prazosin to propranolol enhances the decrease in portal pressure but may cause hypotension and sodium retention. The aim of this study was to compare the portal pressure reduction and safety of the combination of propranolol plus prazosin with that of propranolol plus isosorbide-5-mononitrate (ISMN). Methods: Fifty-six portal-hypertensive cirrhotics received randomly propranolol plus prazosin (n = 28) or propranolol plus ISMN (n = 28) orally for 3 months. Hemodynamics ...

Headspace sampling methods prior to capillary gas chromatography have been widely used for the determination of volatile compounds present in very different kinds of samples. This paper describes an automated and rapid system to determine volatiles from yoghurt. Thirty‐five volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified in polystyrene cups used for yoghurt packaging and 42 VOCs from yoghurt samples. Quantitation of styrene in several samples from the Spanish retail market was carried out.

Wine aging in barrels is carried out to increase stability and achieve more complex aromas. In the last few years, however, the practice of macerating wine with small fragments of toasted oak (chips) has become increasingly common. This conveys similar tastes, aromas, and wooden notes to the wine as those obtained with traditional barrel aging, but much faster and at a fraction of the cost. Without proper regulation, this could lead to fraud if wine macerated with chips is offered as barrel aged ...
