Because of the organ shortage, non-heart-beating donors have been proposed as a possible source of grafts for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Despite the widespread use of controlled non-heart-beating donors, there are only a few published studies reporting the outcomes with uncontrolled non-heart-beating donors (UNHBDs). A prospective case-control study on adult patients undergoing OLT was designed. We used normothermic extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (NECMO) in all UNHBDs. Matching 2: ...

Carbohydrate−nucleic acid contacts are known to be a fundamental part of some drug−DNA recognition processes. Most of these interactions occur through the minor groove of DNA, such as in the calicheamicin or anthracycline families, or through both minor and major groove binders such as in the pluramycins. Here, we demonstrate that carbohydrate−DNA interactions are also possible through sugar capping of a DNA double helix. Highly polar mono- and disaccharides are capable of CH/π stacking onto the ...

Abstract Quadruplex DNA structures are attracting an enormous interest in many areas of chemistry, ranging from chemical biology, supramolecular chemistry to nanoscience. We have prepared carbohydrate–DNA conjugates containing the oligonucleotide sequences of G‐quadruplexes (thrombin binding aptamer (TBA) and human telomere (TEL)), measured their thermal stability and studied their structure in solution by using NMR and molecular dynamics. The solution structure of a fucose–TBA conjugate shows stacking ...

Computational thinking (CT) is being located at the focus of educational innovation, as a set of problem-solving skills that must be acquired by the new generations of students to thrive in a digital world full of objects driven by software. However, there is still no consensus on a CT definition or how to measure it. In response, we attempt to address both issues from a psychometric approach. On the one hand, a Computational Thinking Test (CTt) is administered on a sample of 1,251 Spanish students ...

Computational thinking (CT) is arising as a set of problem-solving skills that must be acquired by the new generations of students to fully understand and participate in our computer-based world. However, from a psychometric approach, we are still at an early stage regarding the definition and assessment of CT as a psychological variable. Microalgae, including cyanobacteria, represent a valuable source of natural compounds that have remarkable bioactive properties. Each microalga species produces a mixture of antioxidants with different amounts of each compound. Three aspects are important in the production of bioactive compounds: the microalga species, the medium composition including light supplied and the photobioreactor design, and operation characteristics. In this study, the antioxidant content and productivity performance ...

Abstract We analyzed the coseismic and early postseismic deformation of the 2015, M w 8.3 Illapel earthquake by inverting 13 continuous GPS time series. The seismic rupture concentrated in a shallow (<20 km depth) and 100 km long asperity, which slipped up to 8 m, releasing a seismic moment of 3.6 × 10 21 Nm ( M w = 8.3). After 43 days, postseismic afterslip encompassed the coseismic rupture. Afterslip concentrated in two main patches of 0.50 m between 20 and 40 km depth along the northern and southern ...

The objective of this paper is to provide an estimation of air emissions (CO2, NOx, SOx and PM) released by port assistant vessels at port level. The methodology is based on the "full bottom-up" approach and starts by assessing the fuel consumed by each tug ship during its individual port exercises (movements during docking and undocking of merchant vessels). The scenario selected for the analysis and measurements is one of the most significant Port of the Mediterranean Sea, where seven auxiliary vessels ...

Longitudinal structures manipulation can re-activate channel migration and thus restore flood-dependent riparian plant communities in human-constrained floodplains. However, it has been rarely implemented over long restored river segments and has been infrequently assessed while taking into account river conditions prior to restoration. This study describes the morphological and vegetation response to this type of restoration in a project completed in 2012 along a 21.6 km river segment in the Órbigo ...

To describe data on epidemiology, microbiology, clinical characteristics and outcome of adult patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) with secondary peritonitis, with special emphasis on antimicrobial therapy and source control. Post hoc analysis of a multicenter observational study (Abdominal Sepsis Study, AbSeS) including 2621 adult ICU patients with intra‐abdominal infection in 306 ICUs from 42 countries. Time-till-source control intervention was calculated as from time of diagnosis ...

Abstract The identity of a given cell type is determined by the expression of a set of genes sharing common cis-regulatory motifs and being regulated by shared transcription factors. Here, we identify cis and trans regulatory elements that drive gene expression in the bilateral sensory neuron ASJ, located in the head of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. For this purpose, we have dissected the promoters of the only two genes so far reported to be exclusively expressed in ASJ, trx-1 and ssu-1. ...

This paper presents the design of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based greenhouse traceability model for the tracking and recordkeeping of seedlings and other agricultural products in the germination and growth stages. Traced products are generally of high quality and high commercial value, making the voluntary adoption of traceability processes for the market in processed products and trade in fresh products more common today. The transmission of diseases to humans, along with the cases of chemical ...

A NASICON solid electrolyte Li 1+ x Al x Ti 2− x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) in a thin film form has been developed with ionic conductivities as high as 0.1 mS cm −1 . A route to achieve a 100-fold increase in the conductivity through post-annealing is discussed.

Abstract Diet plays a key role in determining the longevity of the organisms since it has been demonstrated that glucose restriction increases life span whereas a high‐glucose diet decreases it. However, the molecular basis of how diet leads to the aging process is currently unknown. We propose that the quantity of glucose that fuels respiration influences reactive oxygen species generation and glutathione levels, and both chemical species impact in the aging process. Herein, we provide evidence ...
