Autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic process for the degradation of cytosolic components including damaged organelles, protein aggregates, and intracellular bacteria through a lysosome-dependent pathway. Autophagy can be induced in response to stress conditions. Furthermore, autophagy has been described as involved in both innate and adaptive immune responses, and several studies have shown that certain microorganisms can be eliminated by the autophagic route in a process known as xenophagy. ...

In this paper, we assess the performance of a given hydrophobic membrane from the conceptual design of a hybrid process formed by the hydrophobic membrane itself and the separation train located downstream. To this end, a single pervaporation experiment with a model ethanol–water mixture is needed to estimate the minimum area requirement of the hydrophobic membrane. Short-cut methods, on the other hand, can be used to estimate the minimum number of stages and reflux ratio of the distillation column. ...

The authors utilized a recently developed DNA probe technique to obtain quantitative data on occurrence of Vibrio cholerae in samples collected monthly from 12 environmental sites in Lima, Peru, from November 1993 through March 1995. Peak V. cholerae counts ranged from 10(2)/ml to 10(5)/ml, with the highest counts in sewage-contaminated areas and irrigation water. With our methodology, no V. cholerae cases were detected at any site during the winter months of July through October. Counts were detectable ...

The new nine-valent vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) includes the four HPV genotypes (6, 11, 16, and 18) that are targeted by the older quadrivalent HPV vaccine, plus five additional oncogenic types (31, 33, 45, 52, and 58) remain significantly associated with high grade lesions. We aimed to determine the prevalence of high-risk HPV genotypes in unvaccinated subjects and the association of these genotypes with the incidence of high-grade lesions. We also assessed which, if either, of these ...

Abstract The synthesis of chitosan methylcarbamate (ChMC) and ethylcarbamate (ChEC) is described by using a new methodology. Polymers with substitution degrees up to 63% for ChEC and 68.5% for ChMC were obtained. Derivatives with lower substitutions were acid soluble but those with higher ones were completely insoluble. This could be due to the loss in hydrophilic sites when the substitution degree increases. The reaction conditions and degree of substitution obtained for both derivatives were also ...

Microalgae, including cyanobacteria, represent a valuable source of natural compounds that have remarkable bioactive properties. Each microalga species produces a mixture of antioxidants with different amounts of each compound. Three aspects are important in the production of bioactive compounds: the microalga species, the medium composition including light supplied and the photobioreactor design, and operation characteristics. In this study, the antioxidant content and productivity performance ...

Magnetically treated water (MTW) was used to stimulate the germination process of Pinus tropicalis M. seeds. This species ofPinus is an endemic of the western part of Cuba and at present is threatened due to a visible decrease that has been detected in its populations. The main cause of this decrease is the low seedling production at nurseries, since the germination percentage of this species rarely exceeds 50%. To carry out our work, normal water (water + ions) was treated using 1200 G isotropic strontium ...

<p>The water supply for rainfed crops such as bananas in the Aragua state of Venezuela is often uncertain, particularly towards the beginning of the rainy season (April-May). Where climatic conditions are seasonal, the temporal evolution of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) closely accompanies the interannual variation of vegetation growth in response to thermal and hydric factors. The aim of the study is to assess the relationship between NDVI, rainfall and potential evapotranspiration ...

Although screening mammography is widely used for the detection of breast tumors, it is difficult for a radiologist to interpret correctly a mammogram. It is possible to improve this task by using a computer aided diagnosis system (CAD) which highlights the areas most likely to contain cancer cells. In this paper, we present and compare five different feature extraction methods for breast cancer detection in digitized mammograms. All the methods are based on features extracted from a local window ...

Recently, interest in the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) gut microbiome has received increased attention primarily due to their role in waste bioconversion. However, there is a lack of information on the positive effect on the activities of the gut microbiomes and enzymes (CAZyme families) acting on lignocellulose. In this study, BSFL were subjected to lignocellulose-rich diets: chicken feed ( CF ), chicken manure (CM), brewers’ spent grain (BSG), and water hyacinth (WH). The mRNA libraries were prepared, ...

Antagonism between unrelated plant viruses has not been thoroughly described. Our studies show that two unrelated viruses, papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and papaya mosaic virus (PapMV) produce different symptomatic outcomes during mixed infection depending on the inoculation order. Synergism occurs in plants infected first with PRSV or in plants infected simultaneously with PRSV and PapMV, and antagonism occurs in plants infected first with PapMV and later inoculated with PRSV. During antagonism, elevated ...

Trans-resveratrol, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and total phenolic compounds were assessed in Bolivian grape cultivars collected at high altitude valleys. The TAC of the grapes ranged from 0.8 to 22 μmol Trolox equivalents/g dry matter determined by 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid), and from 0.6 to 10 determined by the ferric reduction antioxidant power. In the present study, we observed that under certain conditions trans-resveratrol levels in Bolivian grapes are 10-fold ...

Abstract Seafood is expected to play a key role in improving access to healthy diets while providing food products with relatively low rates of greenhouse gas emissions. However, both nutrients and carbon footprints vary among species and production methods, and seafood consumption is further influenced by price and consumer preference, such that it is unclear which species are best placed to provide low-emissions nutritious seafood. Here, we use seafood production data to assess the nutritional ...
