Huanglongbing (HLB) is considered one of the most threatening diseases for citrus production and has caused economic damage in many countries around the world. Hence, citrus producers need in-field tools for the early detection of HLB to control its spread. Technological approaches are widely used for in-field HLB detection: algorithms of image analysis have demonstrated their potential to detect HLB in color images automatically. Specifically, texture features have been commonly used for characterizing ...

BACKGROUND: Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity and its possible participation in the control of insulin secretion were studied in pancreatic islets of adult Wistar rats fed a standard commercial diet (SD) or carbohydrates alone (CHD) for one week. TH activity, norepinephrine (NE) content, and glucose-induced insulin secretion were assessed. Blood glucose and insulin levels were measured at the time of sacrifice. RESULTS: CHD rats had significantly higher blood glucose and lower insulin levels than SD ...

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most threatening diseases for citrus production and it has caused significant economic damage worldwide. Hence, computer-vision systems that are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can detect HLB accurately. Moreover, the detection system should be able to discriminate between HLB and other citrus abnormalities to ensure that any treatments are effective. Besides, the causal pathogen of HLB is usually detected and diagnosed by the quantitative real-time ...

Here, we investigated for the first time the frequency and number of circulating tumor plasma cells (CTPC) in peripheral blood (PB) of newly diagnosed patients with localized and systemic plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) using next-generation flow cytometry (NGF) and correlated our findings with the distinct diagnostic and prognostic categories of the disease. Overall, 508 samples from 264 newly diagnosed PCN patients, were studied. CTPC were detected in PB of all active multiple myeloma (MM; 100%), and smoldering ...

Key Clinical Message Diamond‐Blackfan anemia ( DBA ) is a congenital erythroid aplasia usually diagnosed in the early infancy and associated with mutations or large deletions in 11 ribosomal protein ( RP ) genes. Adult patients with severe, transfusion dependence, aregenerative anemia might have a genetic‐in‐origin disease with an atypical presentation. Late onset nonclassical DBA should be ruled out and mutations of RP genes studied.

Background aims We have previously characterized the in vitro growth of two cord blood-derived hematopoietic cell populations in liquid cultures supplemented with recombinant cytokines. In the present study, we assessed the effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) on the growth of such cells. Methods CD34 + CD38 + Lin − and CD34 + CD38 − Lin − cells were obtained by negative selection, and cultured in the presence of marrow-derived MSC and/or early- and late-acting cytokines. Hematopoietic cell growth ...

The proportions of naïve, memory and effector CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood and pleural effusion from lung adenocarcinoma patients were studied. CD8+ T subsets were identified by using a combination of the following antibodies: anti-CD45RA, anti-CD45RO, anti-CD27 and anti-CD28, as well as antibodies to other markers. Fas-positive cells were determined in each CD8+ T subset. Also, the intracellular cytokine patterns of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes from pleural effusion were analysed. In naïve, memory ...

As the study of coconut defense responses against pathogenic microorganisms is hampered by the absence of suitable model systems, we investigated if imbibition of coconut calli with chitosan could be used in vitro to simulate the molecular interactions that occur with pathogens. Our results showed that calli imbibition with 10 mg mL−1 chitosan caused the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, and stimulated a β-1,3-glucanase activity with an Rf near 0.1. In addition, in-gel kinase assay and specific ...

For the first time, a study has been carried out on the pyrolysis of wood residues from Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus leiophylla and Pinus montezumae, from an area in Western México using TGA analysis to determine the main kinetic parameters (Ea and Z) at different heating rates in a N2 atmosphere. The samples were heated from 25 °C to 800 °C with six different heating rates 5–30 °C min−1. The Ea, was calculated using different widely known mathematical models such as Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger- ...

In the present study, we have assessed, in a comparative manner, the in vitro proliferation and expansion potentials of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) present in mobilized peripheral blood from normal subjects (MPB-n; n = 18) and cancer patients (MPB-c; n = 18). The latter included patients with breast cancer (BrCa; n = 8), Hodgkin disease (HD; n = 4), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL; n = 3), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML; n = 3). Progenitor cells from normal bone marrow (BM) and umbilical cord blood (UCB) were included ...

Biomass and carbon dioxide accumulated amounts have been estimated in two Pinus sylvestris and Quercus pyrenaica forests («Matas de Valsaín» and «Pinar de Valsaín», Segovia). Data obtained in samplings made by CIFOR-INIA for both species have been utilized in this study. For each species, three trees per diameter class were selected, being then felled and separated into their biomass fractions (stems, branches with diameter over 7 cm, branches with diameter between 2 and 7 cm and branches thinner than ...

Although long‐standing theory suggests that biotic variables are only relevant at local scales for explaining the patterns of species' distributions, recent studies have demonstrated improvements to species distribution models (SDMs) by incorporating predictor variables informed by biotic interactions. However, some key methodological questions remain, such as which kinds of interactions are permitted to include in these models, how to incorporate the effects of multiple interacting species, and ...

Observations of animals feeding in aggregations are often interpreted as events of social foraging, but it can be difficult to determine whether the animals arrived at the foraging sites after collective search [1-4] or whether they found the sites by following a leader [5, 6] or even independently, aggregating as an artifact of food availability [7, 8]. Distinguishing between these explanations is important, because functionally, they might have very different consequences. In the first case, the ...
