Abstract We report on a clinicopathological case of multiple system atrophy with good response to levodopa and subsequent development of motor complications. Because the subject complied with all the inclusion criteria (Core Assessment Program for Surgical Interventional Therapies in Parkinson's Disease), bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation electrodes were implanted. © 2004 Movement Disorder Society

In this article we investigate the changes observed in the scales that quantify the quality of life (PDQ-39) in patients that have already completed 1 and 2 years of bilateral subthalamic stimulation (DBS-STN). Fourteen patients were evaluated 1 year after DBS-STN; the evaluation was repeated on 11 of them, 2 years after surgery. All of them suffered from Parkinson's disease with a 14.3 (+/-5.7) years history of motor complications. Patients were selected according to CAPSIT criteria. All of them were ...

In cardiac muscle, signaling through cAMP governs many fundamental cellular functions, including contractility, relaxation and automatism. cAMP cascade leads to the activation of the classic protein kinase A but also to the stimulation of the recently discovered exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac). The role of Epac in the regulation of intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis and contractility in cardiac myocytes is still matter of debate. In this study we showed that the selective Epac activator, ...

Abstract Continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) is, at present, an alternative option for advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) with motor fluctuations. We studied the evolution of patients with PD and severe motor fluctuations long‐term treated with CSAI. We reviewed data from 82 patients with PD (mean age, 67 ± 11.07; disease duration, 14.39 ± 5.7 years) and severe motor fluctuations referred to 35 tertiary hospitals in Spain. These patients were long‐term treated (for at least 3 months) with ...

Gastric Cancer (GC) is the fourth most deadly cancer worldwide. Enhanced understanding of its key epidemiological and molecular drivers is urgently needed to lower the incidence and improve outcomes. Furthermore, tumor biology in European (EU) and Latin American (LATAM) countries is understudied. A large percentage of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop motor fluctuations, dyskinesias, and severe non-motor symptoms (NMS) within 3 to 5 years of starting dopaminergic therapy, and these motor complications are refractory to treatment. In secondary and advanced tertiary phosphorus removal processes from wastewater, orthophosphate phosphorus (P-OP) is nearly completely eliminated, and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) becomes the dominant fraction. Therefore, DOP contributes substantially to the total phosphorus (TP) in effluents, and hence, any improvement in TP removal requires improvements in DOP elimination. Accordingly, the challenge is to remove DOP to achieve increasingly lower phosphorus concentrations below the concentrations ...

Herein we describe a comparative clinical and genetic study of Lrrk2-associated parkinsonism in Northern Spain. In our sample from the Basque region, Lrrk2 R1441G and G2019S account for 15 out of 50 kindreds (30%) with familial Parkinson's disease. We observe common founder haplotypes for both R1441G and G2019S carriers. Our findings highlight the importance of Lrrk2 parkinsonism in this population and may have important consequences for its extended Diaspora in North, Central and South Americas.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is infrequent in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) so the best treatment is not well known. The next case shows a 37-year-old man with chronic ITP who suffered an anterior AMI, the platelet count at admission was 39,000 μL. He was treated successfully with primary percutaneous angioplasty under anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin and antiaggregation with clopidogrel and ASA. At the end of the procedure we sealed the femoral access site ...

The Sau3A fragments of Streptomyces grisues IMRU 3750 were cloned in pBR322 as a vector. One of these clones contained the genetic information needed to complement trpA and trpB mutations in Escherichia coli. The other complements trpA, trpB and trpC mutations in E. coli. Both fragments originated in the same region of the chromosome but the latter is 1 kilobase (kb) longer in the region nearest the tetracycline promoter.

We present a Spanish family with autosomal dominant parkinsonism, dementia, and visual hallucinations of variable severity.
