Water diffusion in corn is important in both dry and wet milling because it is one of the factors that determine the functionality and quality of any final product for which this cereal is intended. The diffusion of water into the starch granule will be affected by the type of solvent used, the temperature, and the size and shape of the starch granule. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to assess the effect of steeping corn grits at room temperature in a solution with and without the addition ...

Extrusion was used for obtaining corn masa. Particle size, Ca(OH) 2 concentration, and tempering time had significant effects on the viscosity of extruded flours. Ground corn tempered for different periods of time (0.016–10 h) increased viscosity without application of heat. This behavior can be explained by the release of starches from the protein matrix. Viscoelastic properties of masas showed storage modulus ( G ′) > loss modulus ( G ″) for all samples. G ′ and G ″ increased as a function of tempering time, indicating ...

Wind forecasts are widely spread because of the growth in wind power, but also because there are other applications to consider, such as the long-term scenario forecasts regarding the effects of global warming. Overall, there have been big developments in global circulation models (GCM) that inform future scenarios at the large scale, but wind forecast at a local scale is a problem that has not totally been solved. It should be possible to estimate the winds in the near field with a certain accuracy, ...

URB597 is a compound largely linked to the inhibition of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), an enzyme responsible for the metabolic degradation of the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA). Despite this pharmacological property accounts for its modulatory profile demonstrated in some neurotoxic paradigms, the possible protective properties of this agent have been poorly investigated, and deserve exploration in different neurotoxic models. In this study, we explored the effects of URB597 on oxidative damage ...

Food availability is an important factor affecting breeding success in birds. Food supplementation experiments in birds have in general focused on the effects on reproductive success in terms of female investment (laying date, clutch size, egg size), however, it is also known that the estimation of mate quality based on sexually selected signals influences female reproductive investment. In the particular case of magpies, females use nest size, a post‐mating sexually selected signal, to assess male' ...
