This paper presents a new method for the automatic design of the cooling system in injection molds, based on the discrete geometry of the plastic part. In a first phase the new algorithm recognizes the discrete topology of the part, obtaining its depth map and detecting flat, concave regions and slender details which are difficult to cool. The algorithm performs an automatic analysis of the heat transfer, taking into account functional parameters, in order to guarantee a uniform cooling of the part. ...

Traditional study designs do not identify acute asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic dengue virus (DENV) infections, thus limiting our understanding of immunologic and viral factors that modulate infection outcome. In the 2006 and 2007 dengue seasons, we conducted a pilot index cluster study in Managua, Nicaragua, in which 442 persons living within 50 meters of 22 index cases identified through an ongoing pediatric cohort study were evaluated for DENV infection. Post-enrollment and pre-enrollment DENV ...

Cell wall disassembly in softening fruits is a complex process involving the cumulative action of many families of wall-modifying proteins on interconnected polysaccharide matrices. One strategy to elucidate the in vivo substrates of specific enzymes and their relative importance and contribution to wall modification is to suppress their expression in transgenic fruit. It has been reported previously that inhibiting the expression of pectate lyase genes by antisense technology in strawberry (Fragaria ...

Babesia bovis belongs to the phylum Apicomplexa and is the major causal agent of bovine babesiosis, the most important veterinary disease transmitted by arthropods. In apicomplexan parasites, the interaction between AMA1 and RON2 is necessary for the invasion process, and it is a target for vaccine development. In B. bovis, the existence of AMA1 has already been reported; however, the presence of a homolog of RON2 is unknown. The aim of this study was to characterize RON2 in B. bovis. The B. bovis ...

Endemic Borago species contain notably high amounts of γ-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n6), the main bioactive fatty acid of borage oil. However, little is known about the occurrence of nutritionally relevant phytochemicals in seed oil of such plants. This work was designed to test the occurrence of important phytochemicals (tocopherols, sterols and squalene) in the seed oil of Borago species. To this end, seeds of endemic-wild and farmed Borago species were collected and analyzed. All compounds were analyzed ...

Pectins are essential components of primary plant cell walls and middle lamellae, and are related to the consistency of the fruit and its textural changes during ripening. In fact, strawberries become soft as the middle lamellae of cortical parenchyma cells are extensively degraded during ripening, leading to the observed short post-harvest shelf life. Using a custom-made oligonucleotide-based strawberry microarray platform, a putative rhamnogalacturonate lyase gene (FaRGlyase1) was identified. Bioinformatic ...

Summary To investigate the incidence of dengue virus (DENV) infection in Nicaragua, a 2‐year prospective study was conducted in schoolchildren 4–16 years old in the capital city of Managua. Blood samples were collected before the rainy season in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and were assayed for DENV‐specific antibodies. Participants were monitored for dengue‐like illness, and acute and convalescent blood samples were collected from suspected dengue cases. In 2001 and 2002, 602 and 397 students were recruited, ...

Strawberry softening is characterized by an increase in the solubilization and depolymerization of pectins from cell walls. Galactose release from pectin side chains by β-galactosidase enzymes has been proposed as one reason for the increase in soluble pectins. A putative β-galactosidase gene, FaβGal4, has been identified using a custom-made oligonucleotide-based strawberry microarray platform. FaβGal4 was expressed mainly in the receptacle during fruit ripening, and was positively regulated by ...

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni and Mentha piperita are plants that generate interest mainly due to the presence of bioactive compounds in their leaves, such as phenolics. For this reason, organic and chemical fertilization were evaluated along with antioxidant activity. Results showed significant differences for total phenols ...

Complete resection of affected bile ducts with Roux-en-Y derivation (CRR-en-Y) is a good procedure with low mortality and complications. The purpose of the study was to ...

Abstract Bovine babesiosis is the most important protozoan disease transmitted by ticks. In Plasmodium falciparum , another Apicomplexa protozoan, the interaction of rhoptry neck protein 2 (RON2) with apical membrane antigen-1 (AMA-1) has been described to have a key role in the invasion process. To date, RON2 has not been described in Babesia bigemina , the causal agent of bovine babesiosis in the Americas. In this work, we found a ron2 gene in the B. bigemina genome. RON2 encodes a protein that is 1351 ...

Acute cholecystitis is one of the most frequent diseases faced by the general surgeon. In recent decades, different prognostic factors have been observed, and effective treatments described, to improve the results in patients with said pathology (lower morbidity and mortality, shorter hospital stay, and minimum conversion of laparoscopic to open procedures). In general, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for acute cholecystitis, but it is not exempt from complications, especially ...

Babesia bigemina is one of the most prevalent species causing bovine babesiosis around the world. Antigens involved in host cell invasion are vaccine targets for this disease but are largely unknown in this species. A protein stored in the micronemes, called Micronemal Protein 1 (MIC-1), contains a sialic acid binding domain that participates in the invasion process of host cells and is a vaccine ...

The loss of firm texture is one of the most characteristic physiological processes that occur during the ripening of fleshy fruits. It is generally accepted that the disassembly of primary cell wall and middle lamella is the main factor involved in fruit softening. In this process, polygalacturonase (PG) has been implicated in the degradation of the polyuronide network in several fruits. However, the minor effect of PG down-regulation on tomato softening, reported during the nineties, minimized the ...
