Abstract BACKGROUND: A prognostic index to predict induction death in adult patients receiving induction chemotherapy for de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was developed. METHODS: The authors analyzed 570 patients (aged 16‐70 years) included in 2 multicenter trials of the CETLAM Group to develop a scoring system (study cohort). The scoring system was tested in 209 patients from an external single institution (validation cohort). Induction regimens consisted of anthracycline and cytarabine combination ...

Prednisolone therapy increases the risk of infections in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH). We evaluated whether the use of the Lille Model at day 4 (LM4) is useful to predict response to prednisolone compared with the classic day 7 (LM7) in order to limit a futile exposure to corticosteroids. We performed a retrospective analysis of a large multinational cohort of patients with SAH with Maddrey's discriminant function (DF) ≥32. Response to corticosteroids was assessed with LM4 and LM7, according ...

This paper presents a review of concepts related to wildfire risk assessment, including the determination of fire ignition and propagation (fire danger), the extent to which fire may spatially overlap with valued assets (exposure), and the potential losses and resilience to those losses (vulnerability). This is followed by a brief discussion of how these concepts can be integrated and connected to mitigation and adaptation efforts. We then review operational fire risk systems in place in various parts ...

ABSTRACT The last decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of scientific publications describing physiological and pathological functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a collective term covering various subtypes of cell‐released, membranous structures, called exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, apoptotic bodies, and many other names. However, specific issues arise when working with these entities, whose size and amount often make them difficult to obtain as relatively ...

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a highly prevalent and aggressive disease. In the metastatic setting, major advances include the incorporation of immunotherapy and targeted therapies into the clinician's therapeutic armamentarium. Standard chemotherapeutic regimens have long been reported to interfere with the immune response to the tumor; conversely, antitumor immunity may add to the effects of those therapies. The aim of immunotherapy is to specifically enhance the immune response directed ...

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is caused by deficiency of type VII collagen due to COL7A1 mutations such as c.6527insC, recurrently found in the Spanish RDEB population. Assessment of clonal correction-based therapeutic approaches for RDEB requires large expansions of cells, exceeding the replication capacity of human primary keratinocytes. Thus, immortalized RDEB cells with enhanced proliferative abilities would be valuable. Using either the SV40 large T antigen or papillomavirus ...

Advances in fiber technology have enabled the integration of plastic optical fibers (POFs) with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the development of simple, cost-effective, and sensitive sensing systems. The aim of this letter was to develop a low-cost device for measuring adulteration in liquids. In this letter, we present a low-cost optoelectronic system based on a U-shaped POF intrinsic sensor to measure the changes in RGB composition of light transmitted as an evanescent wave through liquid solutions ( ...

In the early 1990s, Galician Regional Government introduced a community-based fishery management system for some sedentary-invertebrate resources. This meant the introduction of territorial use rights, which provided greater autonomy to decision-making, regulation, control, management and resources assessment. Nevertheless, after three decades, shallow achievements were built upon the collaboration between science and fisheries. The GAP Galician Case Study was born as an attempt to strengthen long- ...

Background . Amenable mortality, or premature deaths that could be prevented with medical care, is a proven indicator for assessing healthcare quality when adapted to a country or region’s specific healthcare context. This concept is currently used to evaluate the performance of national and international healthcare systems. However, the levels of efficacy and effectiveness determined using this indicator can vary greatly depending on the causes of death that are included. We introduce a new approach ...

Bioethanol is a biofuel produced mainly from the fermentation of carbohydrates derived from agricultural feedstocks by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae . One of the most widely adopted strains is PE-2, a heterothallic diploid naturally adapted to the sugar cane fermentation process used in Brazil. Here we report the molecular genetic analysis of a PE-2 derived diploid (JAY270), and the complete genome sequence of a haploid derivative (JAY291). The JAY270 genome is highly heterozygous (∼2 SNPs/kb) and ...

This retrospective study presents data from 105 consecutive multiple myeloma and lymphoma patients who had PB CD34+ cell counts <10/μL on day 4 of steady-state G-CSF mobilization for autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation. Our results confirm the capacity of plerixafor to improve mobilization outcomes in this clinical setting. In addition, they show that the effectiveness of plerixafor, compared with G-CSF only, translates to patients with very low (<3.5/μL) circulating CD34+ cell counts: overnight ...

A global view of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the Iberian microplate is necessary to determine the role of inherited Variscan structures in the configuration of the Alpine Cycle. Furthermore, it is important to reconstruct the extensional Mesozoic geometries of the Iberian margins, presently inverted during the Cenozoic compression. We discuss briefly in this chapter, thanks to a large number of innovative scientific studies, the evolution of the Iberian microplate and of its margins, ...

Abstract Many measurements at the LHC require efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom (b) or charm (c) quarks. An overview of the algorithms used to identify c jets is described and a novel method to calibrate them is presented. This new method adjusts the entire distributions of the outputs obtained when the algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. It is based on an iterative approach exploiting three distinct control regions that are enriched ...

Publishing in JCR and SJR journals has become crucial for curricular development. Results from nursing investigations “compete” for publication in journals which are not specific to the field of care, affecting the academic development of these investigators. This phenomenon may lead to an ongoing adverse effect on nursing researchers and academics engaged in research in nursing care. The aim of this study was to evaluate habits regarding scientific literature consulting, the transfer of published ...

Abstract A test of lepton flavor universality in B ± → K ± μ + μ − and B ± → K ± e + e − decays, as well as a measurement of differential and integrated branching fractions of a nonresonant B ± → K ± μ + μ − decay are presented. The analysis is made possible by a dedicated data set of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV recorded in 2018, by the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a special high-rate data stream designed for collecting about 10 billion unbiased b hadron decays. The ratio of the branching fractions B ( B ± → K ± μ + μ − ) to ...
