MORE THAN 10 YEARS AGO, MEXICO, THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA LAUNCHED THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (NAFTA). FOR THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT OF THAT TIME, NAFTA WAS THE COROLLARY OF A RADICAL CHANGE IN THE NATION'S DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY. THIS CHANGE IMPLIED ENDING ONCE AND FOR ALL THE STRATEGY OF IMPORT SUBSTITUTION AND STATE-LED INDUSTRIALIZATION, AND IT WITH A STRATEGY CENTERED ON TRADE LIBERALIZATION AND THE REDUCTION OF STATE INTERVENTION IN THE ECONOMY. IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THIS STRATEGY, ...

Abstract This article examines Mexico's industrial policy and economic performance, focusing on an analysis of the structural changes in its manufacturing sector associated with NAFTA. The aim of the article is to improve our understanding of why the post‐NAFTA evolution of the Mexican economy has been characterized by lights and shadows, with low inflation, low budget deficits and a surge in non‐oil exports on the one hand, and on the other hand a slower than expected expansion of economic activity ...

Some of the critical mechanisms that mediate CKD progression are associated with vascular calcifications, disbalance of mineral metabolism, increased oxidative and metabolic stress, inflammation, coagulation abnormalities, endothelial dysfunction, or accumulation of uremic toxins. Also, it is widely accepted that pathologies with a strong influence in CKD progression are diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. A disbalance in magnesium (Mg) homeostasis, more specifically hypomagnesemia, ...

Invasive fungal infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in critically ill patients. Increasing resistance rates and inadequate antifungal exposure have been documented in these patients, due to clinically relevant pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) alterations, leading to treatment failure. Physiological changes such as third spacing (movement of fluid from the intravascular compartment to the interstitial space), hypoalbuminemia, renal failure and hepatic ...

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) plays a key role in the complex network between the bones and other organs. Initially, it was thought that FGF23 exclusively regulated phosphate and vitamin D metabolism; however, recent research has demonstrated that an excess of FGF23 has other effects that may be detrimental in some cases. The understanding of the signaling pathways through which FGF23 acts in different organs is crucial to develop strategies aiming to prevent the negative effects associated ...

Cell transplant-mediated tissue repair of the damaged spinal cord is being tested in several clinical trials. The current candidates are neural stem cells, stromal cells, and autologous Schwann cells (aSC). Due to their peripheral origin and limited penetration of astrocytic regions, aSC are transplanted intralesionally as compared to neural stem cells that are transplanted into intact spinal cord. Injections into either location can cause iatrogenic injury, and thus technical precision is important ...

Abstract In chronic kidney disease (CKD), high serum phosphate concentration is associated with cardiovascular disease and deterioration in renal function. In early CKD, the serum phosphate concentration is normal due to increased fractional excretion of phosphate. Our premise was that high phosphate intake even in patients with early CKD would result in an excessive load of phosphate causing tubular injury and accelerating renal function deterioration. In CKD 2–3 patients, we evaluated whether increased ...

Repeated noise exposure induces inflammation and cellular adaptations in the peripheral and central auditory system resulting in pathophysiology of hearing loss. In this study, we analyzed the mechanisms by which noise-induced inflammatory-related events in the cochlea activate glial-mediated cellular responses in the cochlear nucleus (CN), the first relay station of the auditory pathway. The auditory function, glial activation, modifications in gene expression and protein levels of inflammatory ...

Cash management is concerned with optimizing costs of short-term cash policies of a company. Different optimization models have been proposed in the literature whose focus has been only placed on a single objective, namely, on minimizing costs. However, cash managers may also be interested in risk associated to cash policies. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective cash management model based on compromise programming that allows cash managers to select the best policies, in terms of cost and ...

In November 2008, Colombian authorities dismantled a network of Ponzi schemes, making hundreds of thousands of investors lose tens of millions of dollars throughout the country. Using original data on the geographical incidence of the Ponzi schemes, this paper estimates the impact of their breakdown on crime. We find that the crash of Ponzi schemes differentially exacerbated crime in affected districts. Confirming the intuition of the standard economic model of crime, this effect is only present ...

Abstract The ability of kinetochores (KTs) to maintain stable attachments to dynamic microtubule structures (‘straight’ during microtubule polymerization and ‘curved’ during microtubule depolymerization) is an essential requirement for accurate chromosome segregation. Here we show that the kinetochore-associated Ska complex interacts with tubulin monomers via the carboxy-terminal winged-helix domain of Ska1, providing the structural basis for the ability to bind both straight and curved microtubule ...

Conductive hearing loss causes a progressive decline in cochlear activity that may result in functional and structural modifications in auditory neurons. However, whether these activity-dependent changes are accompanied by a glial response involving microglia, astrocytes, or both has not yet been fully elucidated. Accordingly, the present study was designed to determine the involvement of glial related mechanisms in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) of adult rats at 1, 4, 7 and 15 d after ...

ABSTRACT One of the main mechanisms used by neurons and glial cells to promote repair following brain injury is to upregulate activity‐dependent molecules such as insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF‐1) and interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β). In the auditory system, IGF‐1 is crucial for restoring synaptic transmission following hearing loss; however, whether IL‐1β is also involved in this process is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the expression of IGF‐1 and IL‐1β within neurons and glial cells of the ventral ...

Abstract The removal of afferent activity has been reported to modify neuronal activity in the cochlear nucleus of adult rats. After cell damage, microglial cells are rapidly activated, initiating a series of cellular responses that influences neuronal function and survival. To investigate how this glial response occurs and how it might influence injured neurons, bilateral cochlear ablations were performed on adult rats to examine the short‐term (16 and 24 hours and 4 and 7 days) and long‐term (15, ...

The lipid raft protein Flotillin-1 was previously shown to be required for cell proliferation. Here we show that it is critical for the maintenance of the levels of the mitotic regulator Aurora B. Knockdown of Flotillin-1 induced aberrant mitotic events similar to those produced by Aurora B depletion and led to a marked decline in Aurora B levels and activity. Transfection of wild-type full-length Flotillin-1 or forms directed to the nucleus increased Aurora B levels and activity. Flotillin-1 interacted ...
